The War of Spirits - 1144
5/23/12 - 5/24/12
Current Score CRAB - 37 gold, 6.5 glory. MANTIS - 30 gold, 4.5 glory. LION - 24 gold, 4.5 glory. PHOENIX - 22 gold, 4.0 glory. DRAGON - 17 gold, 1.5 glory.
--------------------
The Spirit Armies were being driven away from the Capital, and were growing desperate to hold these lands. The Returned Cranes held this side of Otosan Uchi, and at the request of the Steel Chrysanthemum, the Returned Dragon were sent to support their ranks.
There was a common goal and common enemy, so their troops got along famously. However, when the commanders of each legion suddenly dueled one another and killed each other with a kharmic strike out of the blue, the armies began to revolt against one another; Spirit drew steel against Spirit, and it was a relative cakewalk for the Lion to march in and exterminate the survivors.
--------------------
The Crab continued to "liberate" parts of Scorpion Lands, freeing them from Non-Mantis threats. However, the Spirits must have gotten orders from the returned Hantei, where ever he was, since they had doubled back and made a push to drive the Crab off from their progress. If they lost here, they'd practically be losing their last foothold in Southern Rokugan!
The Crab, however, controlled Beiden Pass, or at least the Southern part of it. With that, they were able to get reinforcements from the north, from one of the only true allies the Crab had.
If the Crab had any one weakness, it was their lack of mobility. They were an unstoppable tide of iron, but a slow-moving one. They were easily out-maneuvered and out-flanked, and the Spirits had to capitalize on that if they had a chance to win. Using their best scouts and horseman, they began to move out and force the Crab into a pincer maneuver.
When the mounted unit of Shinjo suddenly rode in at the very start of combat, it caught the Spirits off-guard; just what WAS happening up north? The cavalry charge force them to break ranks and lose cohesion, making it all the more easy for the Crab to seize the day, undaunted by any challenge.
--------------------
The Mantis were still reeling from some minor Conflicts with the Crab. The rival Clan had turned its attentions inward to leave the Mantis to lick their wounds.
Rather than spend too much time recuperating, though, they pressed their momentum, going after more territory, after more glory. The Mantis were wealthy, and if they had the Crane in their pocket, there wasn't ANYTHING they could do!
However, their greed and impatience finally caught up to them; the attention they got when the Crab attacked made the Spirit Armies aware of their tactics. Even with some stray Matsu that they had picked up, separated from their army, it wasn't enough to defeat the Spirits with their normal tactics. Not when they were waiting for them...
The fleet would sail back to the Mantis Islands, broken and weary from all the battle. Now was the time to lick their wounds, whether they liked it or not...
--------------------
The Phoenix had suffered a great many losses this war; but they did not yield. If they gave up after such losses, there would be no coming back, both from the devastation and from the besmirched honor. The Hantei had left their provinces and headed westward, leaving only Agasha Tamori to contend with.
It cost them koku they couldn't afford, but the Phoenix had received help from the Crab, of all Clans. With the ports secure, the Crab had sent them some valuable supplies and soldiers to aid them in their restoration. Their unique but brilliant tactical insights gave the Phoenix Commanders inspiration and ideas they desperately needed.
Phoenix Magicks combined with Crab Siege Tactics turned out to be a very potent, very destructive combination - no force in the Empire, be it friend or foe, would ever be able to withstand such an onslaught. The Spirit Armies were devastated, broken, scattered... finally, after many long years, the Phoenix were in control of their own lands once more!
Though, the victory was bitter-sweet; no sign of Agasha Tamori's body was ever found.
