akenon Yes, yes exactly :] Anytime people bring up the terms "mainstream" or "Hot Topic" in a lolita community, there's always tension, so I'll try not to be offensive to anyone when I explain my opinions ^^'
It's not so much that we can be considered "picky" rather than something like...
ON MAINSTREAM THINGS. "If everybody likes this, then won't it be that you are just following the trend?" Even if a person likes something before it becomes popular, such as goth loli in this case, then once everyone likes it, there isn't really a difference between you and everyone else. There most definitely IS a difference, but to the rest of the world, you're just doing what is "in" or stylish for the moment. Then, after the community begins to tire of the fashion, when you continue to wear it, you'll be ridiculed for being "out of date" or for not keeping up with the styles.
ON HOT TOPIC. Also, I remember saying before, but Hot Topic doesn't really have the best quality clothing, to be honest. It kind of rips easily, and it's really thin. Overall, in my opinion it's cheap quality for a high price. Personally, even if Hot Topic sold "True Lolita" clothing, I think it woudl still be a cheap quality version, and therefore I would prefer to buy the original brands anyway. Even if you pay a lot more, at least you know it will last longer, right? The same goes for brands like Bodyline. I'm sure that they probably WOULD be considered "True Lolita" since I've seen some Kera snap lolis in it, but~ many people prefer to buy from big name brands such as Baby the Stars Shine Bright because they know the quality will be better. I can't say I've bought from either of them, but I do like Baby the Stars Shine Bright better...
ON SEWING. I can't say too much about what people in Japan would think as far as sewing goes, but since they include patterns in the GLB's I don't think it would be a problem. Also, since pattern books specifically for Gothic Lolita are released by the same publisher (yes?), then I the said lolitas MIGHT still consider it name-brand (since the patterns in GLB are from the name-brand designers).
I'm sure many of you can relate to something like that, although I may not have worded it so eloquently ._.; One thing I wanted to say, again, I don't have anything aginst people who sew, and I myself do it to get EGL cloths (in fact just today I made a pretty sweet Lolita skirt out of a dress I found at the thrift store which was too small but had awesome material, and potential to become Lolita), but just according to that article, most Lolis in Japan (which you could probably make an argument to say is the Origin of Lolita as we know it), they don't consider you a real Lolita unless you buy name-brand cloths. This would mean that even if you sew your stuff, you're not a 'real' lolita.

I kind of agree. Although making loli clothing is the cheaper option, brand names are usually more dependable as well.
Besides, brand name is always cool to have. :]

I have now 2 bodyline dresses, of which i desperatly need pictures. And the quaity matches up with nee-chan's 'brand dress'
although it's considered not as good to be a lolita with the non brandname clothing as long as it's not a halfassed job very few lolitas in japan or america will complain about it.
I also have a HT loli dress, where i don't love it as much as the others, however it's not terrible quality. I am considering doing a small chop job on it when i get my new sewing machine though, making it a real goth loli piece. But I'm undecided.

I merely said "no"... --------------------- Yey, Hot Topic. heart
I'll readilly admit that I love hot topic and most of the clothes they sell.
Unfortunately, I live in Germany, and there are no Hot Topics here, and it's hard to order from them because I have an APO address which they charge like... 10% of your total price more to ship to, I think?
Which is silly... But I'm straying from the point.
While the clothes may not be the best quality, I don't feel like hand making all of my outfits when there's a store available that sells the clothes that I want to wear.
As for the main stream thing. It doesn't bother me at all. But then again, I'm the only girl in my entire school that dresses even slightly the way that I do. And I have dressed like this for almost six years, now. Started to before I even knew what Lolita was. And I got a lot of my clothes when I was in Italy last year, and may I just say that in Italy, at the time, the "dark" style was in, and I had a field day buying skirts. Plus stockings. heart --------------------------------------- ...That's when he gave me his attention

I have noticed that the first 'dress' posted there is almost a copy from Baby The Stars Shine Bright.
It makes me sick. =_=

I pretty much learn from reading books on it..

I merely said "no"... --------------------- On sewing: You might want to try making some easier things, rather than like, going all out and making a loli-dress right away. xP Stuff like pillows, stuffed animals, etc~ make for really good practice, and some nice gifts or keepsakes. heart --------------------------------------- ...That's when he gave me his attention

Well-Hot Topic is just geared towards whatever is popular for a certain age group. I think it's 13-25 or something like that. When they first opened, it was mostly goth and punk with no grungy giant pants with chains all over them. Now t shirts and big pants are half the store. A year ago they were selling flourescent jelly bracelets and purses with Blondie on them (man, I wanted one of those).
Americans can discard some fads rather easily, so Hot Topic is just testing the market. If EGL sticks, we may see some better made items like the eighty dollar corsets they hang up high on the wall where no one can reach. Still, the quality will never be as high as Japanese craftsmanship.
I just took apart a summer yukata to let out the seams and make it bigger for my big ol' American female body and discovered that the entire thing was stitched BY HAND. In perfect tiny stitches. I was very much in awe.

Quote: What are your views on Hot Topic and J fashion (Together, not seperately)? I love J fashion and Hot topic. Hot topic gives J fashion a goth edge which I like. Quote: Do you believe that people that shop at Hot Topic are not true J fashionists? No I think that people who shop there like both, goth and J fashion. Quote: Do you believe the lolita style clothes at HT are close, or not close to actual lolita fashion? Hmmmm yeah some clothing. But the store isn't made especailly for Gothic Lolita. Everyone that is into goth isn't in to G-lol. HT caters to both.

Oh, and the occasional storage box. Haha. I thought Charlotte Russe corsets weren't too bad, and they were cheaper anyway.... ^^; Still, if Hot Topic starts making better quality stuff, I'm sure the prices will go through the roof. They're already quite high for what they are, anyway~.
