radioactive alchemist I was wondering if someone could check this translation for me? I want to eventually be a translator, and want to practice by translating lyrics...this is my first attempt, I picked a verse I thought would be easy. ミュージシャンにあこがれ 見果てぬ夢追いかけて 一歩づつゆっくり 歌の足跡残したい (Musician ni akogare mihatenu yume oikakete ippozutsu yukkuri uta no ashiato nokoshitai) Yearning to be a musician Chasing the dream to its end One step at a time, slowly I want to leave behind the footprints of song Do I pass or fail? xd (I knew I should have tried to get into that translation workshop class last semester...) Sounds ridiculous, but I need to know. XD Raion no hi..i think..can mean The lions sun or the Lion of Sun Yup that's right. Hi = day, Taiyou = sun Lion of the Sun (or rather, Sun's Lion) will probably be Taiyou no Raion. (Raion because i dont know for the life of me what's lion in japanese XDD sorry~) Anyway explaination : Japanese uses the " 's " (which is the 'no' in Taiyou no Raion) rather than making that phrase the reverse (i.e. Lion of the sun) which is why I had to give you Sun's Lion^^; hope that helps^^ Japanese for Lion is Tora. So, Taiyou no tora. Also hi can also mean sun or sunshine but mostly taiyou is used. Hope i helped. whee Tora is tiger. Shishi is lion. Dattebayo is an expression meant to add emphasis, but more than that, it's a sentence ending which is unique to Naruto, and represents his 'style' of speaking. Anyone who understands enough Japanese will start to notice that each character in an anime usually has their own way of speaking which can be instantly recognized by the other characters even when written or quoted by another character. This can be simply their level of politeness or by an individualized way of ending a sentence, like Naruto's. If you need to translate 'dattebayo' or Konohamaru's 'da kore', it is perfectly acceptable to imagine that they simply said 'desu' or 'da' or 'de gozaimasu', or whatever you're more comfortable using yourself. Really, it's similar to the decision about which personal pronoun to use. Watashi, washi, oira, boku, ore, watakushi, atashi, sessha...there are more, but you get the picture. The point is, don't be overly concerned about translating things like that, because a lot of the time there isn't even an actual meaning.

Samurai Korubii I just started out and im really would like to know how to say and spell: I am a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar.....but im not having much luck figuring it out... There are probably two hundred different ways to say this, the biggest one being what type of wind you mean. I'll give it a shot, though. Watashi wa seiran no konoha; amagake wo mite goran. The wind I chose, 'seiran' means a wind blowing through verdure. Plain wind is simple 'kaze'. Also, leaf is 'ha' but konoha is an older word for 'tree leaf'. Instead of 'mite goran' you could also use a simpler 'look' such as 'minasai' or a more direct 'mite kure'. 'Amagake' is soar, but you can also use 'tobu no' which means 'act of flight'. And of course, my previous post lists some alternatives for 'watashi', but you can also just leave it off.

yes, technically she should have said 私は日本人です！but seeing as how i wouldn't have understood everything else she said without the translation, i'm sure she knows that and just typed "go" by accident. ^^ though, looking at this now i realize i'm posting this about a month after the fact....oops. xD; i'm surprised this topic isn't more active!
but i do have a question that's been on my mind for a while now. i'm surpised NONE of the books/lessons i have read/used cover this:
how would you respond if someone asked you if you speak japanese? i'm thinking something along the lines of "no, i'm just a student" or "not really, but i'm studying" or "only a little bit"....but i'm open to anything that would be more expected/normal to the person who is asking. ^^;

how would you respond if someone asked you if you speak japanese? i'm thinking something along the lines of "no, i'm just a student" or "not really, but i'm studying" or "only a little bit"....but i'm open to anything that would be more expected/normal to the person who is asking. ^^; Alrighty, ifn' someone asks you if you can speak Japanese, you can pick one of the following...or mix and match if you can: Zen zen hanasemasen - I can't speak it at all (but you're negating yourself whee ) Iie, mada benkyou shiteimasu - No, I'm still studying Nihongo no gakusei desu ga mada hanasemasen - I'm a student of japanese, but I can't speak it yet yukkuri hanashitara wakarimasu - I can understand if you speak slowly sukoshi dake hanasemasu - I can only speak a little peraperadesuyo - I'm fluent Nope - ...guess ...those are your Mr.Potatoe answers, mix them as you please (accessory phrases and informal conjugations not included)...that diverse enough to cover it?

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to translate a letter for me. One of my friends sent it to me, but it's in Japanese, and I can only get rough translations of it. gonk I was kinda hoping to get a better translation of it. Now I'll translate the pieces so you can correct me if I'm wrong.

親愛 (shin ai) = dear (often used as greeting in letters)
なる (naru) = who is called
私はあなたに感謝をしたい。
感謝 (kansha) = gratitude
したい (shitai) = ~tai form (want to) from suru
いつも私のことを心から思っていてくれて。
いつも (itsumo) = always
心から (kokoro kara) = from heart
思っていてくれて (omotte>omou+ite>iru+kurete>kureru)
omou means to think/feel while the form omotte iru makes it present progressive tense (to be thinking) and I learned kureru like a kind of familiar kudasai, that's why I translated "please keep thinking about me with your heart" but I'm not confident.
本当にどうもありがとう (honto ni doomo arigatou) = really thank you very much ^^
あなたと出会えた ことを 私は とてもうれしく思う。
出会 (deai) = meeting
えた (eta>eru) = to be possible (was possible)
うれしく (ureshiku>ureshii) = happy (happily?)
I think it means "it's very happy to think that was possible to meet you" but I'm not too sure either.
コートニーと いっしょに いると 、私は さまざまな 大切な ことに 気付く ことができる。
いっしょに (issho ni) = together
さまざまな (samazamana) = various
大切な (taisetsuna) = important
気付く (kitsuku) = to recognize/realize/etc
ことができる = to be able to
"I'm able to realize vary important thing together with you." may be, but I'm not sure.
こんなにすばらしい友だちに 出会うことは、なかなかできない。
こんなにすばらしい友だち (konnanisubarashiitomodachi) = a wonderful friend like this
出会う (deau) = to come across / meet
なかなか (nakanaka) = easily/very/and a lot of things
できない (dekinai>dekiru) = to be able (among other things)

とても大切に (totemotaisetsuni) = with great care
思っている (omotteiru) = thinking / feeling

いつか = one day/someday

引っ越して来る(hikkoshite>hikkosu+kuru) = come moving / move to here
とても楽しみにしている (totemotanoshiminishite>tanoshiminisuru+iru) = looking foward to
声が聞きたい (koe ga kikitai) = want to listen to the voice
髪を切ってもらいたい
髪(kami) = hair
切って(kitte>kiru) = to cut
もらいたい (moraitai>morau) = to get somebody to do something but can also mean to receive; to take; to accept;
then maybe he/she wants to take a haircut from you?
楽しいひとときを過ごしたい
ひととき (hitotoku) = moment/time
過ごしたい (sugoshitai>sugosu) = to spend
出会えて本当によかったと思う。
出会えて (deaete) = able to meet
本当に (hontoni) = really
よかった (yokatta>yoi/ii) = past of good
と思う = to think
これからもずっと私のそばにいてね、コートニー。
これから (korekara) = after this
ずっと (zutto) = all the way
そばに = near/close/beside
いて (ite>iru) = to be
