For a while, he’d believed that someone would come save him. He’d lie there in the dark, waiting, because the prospect of no one coming was more than he could handle. He would imagine what his rescue would be like. He thought that M would, at any moment, come busting through the door. She would make some nasty comment about how he was always getting in trouble and needing her help, but she would secretly be relieved that he was finally safe. And once they had gotten far away from this place, maybe she would even cry.

Or maybe if M didn’t come, R would. She would come into the room, hug him despite any pain it might cause him because she didn’t have much self-control. After that, she would be really careful not to cause him any further harm and once they’d left, she’d force him to go to the hospital and have his wounds treated.

There was also the possibility that L would come, he figured. The idea of being rescued by L wasn’t nearly as appealing as being rescued by M or R, but he wouldn’t complain. When L showed up, it would be all glares and glowers and orders, but he didn’t think he’d actually mind. He just wanted to leave.

It was hard to keep these ideas of rescue alive. Each second that passed slowly ate away at his hope, until eventually he gave up on ever being saved and decided that he’d been abandoned and left to die.
