Kojiro sets down the lantern and runs! Denbe runs too! Masuyo and Kagae stay behind, it seems.
Kojiro, you ever try running with a lengthy dangling chain trying to be readied? It's not easy. You keep stepping on it accidentally and almost tripping yourself - you don't, but you have to keep slowing down to avoid just that. Denbe rockets past you as you are still trying to prepare yourself for a battle. By the time you get to the corner to look down the street the man, and Denbe, had run down, you only get the briefest glimpse of your Hare as he darts around another corner several dozen yards down the street. You're pretty sure you'll have lost them by the time you get there, but I want to leave it to you if you wanted to still bother trying.
Denbe, you zoom past Kojiro and try to catch up to the man in black. You are very light on your feet, traversing the still soggy ground without the slightest bit of difficulty! Whereas he keeps pausing at corners to figure out where to run, you simply focus on closing on him, nearing closer and closer as you leave your companions in your dust.
You're going to catch up to him, but I leave the situation you catch him in up to you. I'm going to require a TN 5 Agility/Athletics (Running) roll from you, with raises to dictate the situation: Failure = You find yourself amidst an ambush! Success = He stops to fight you in an intersection. Help for either party might arrive easily. Success with 1 raise = You chase him into a fairly large ruined building. Escape routes will be limited. Odds are, help probably won't come for either one of you. Success with 2 raises = You chase him into a dead end, with no escape routes. Most likely, help for either one of you will be too late. Success with 3 raises = You can dictate the scenario, with any advantages you can think of. GM veto rights apply. Success with 4 raises = As above, AND you can get a Surprise round in.

Pumping his arms, the Hare focused fully on two tasks- keeping from getting bogged down by the mud or debris, and running down the man as quickly as possible. Leaping puddles and debris, he grabbed buildings to help himself turn corners sharply, vaulting things when necessary, not just legs but whole body put to the task, closing rapidly-
Finally pulling nearly close enough to start deciding how he wanted to take him down, the man rounded a corner, and the Hare grabbed the edge and swung himself around it. And to a perfect situation, still in motion. The hill ran noticeably downward, road narrowing slightly toward the end... where a wall had fallen over, and debris barred the path.
The Hare was on a collision course.
Now it was just about who reacted more quickly.
[3 Raises made.] [Scenario: Dead end, no escape routes. Help for either likely to be too late.] [Desired Advantages: Higher ground. Free draw of katana. One free raise to help allies arrive sooner than enemies/allies arrive one turn sooner than enemies (if relevant).] [7k4+3 Agility/Athletics(Running): 38 vs TN5+15]

Kojiro tried to keep up with the chain to the Kusari-gama coiled in his right hand. However, the Scorpion followed with a measure of prudence. Who knows what else could be lurking out here...

One moment they were walking away from a place she was quite sure needed to be dealt with immediately, and the next she found herself alone and confused as the party dashed off in pursuit of some unseen (but clearly heard) scout, their previous encounter completely forgotten. Considering their behavior towards the last person they had met in this place, she almost didn't want to follow, but ultimately decided she had a greater obligation to make sure nobody got killed.

Masuyo tries to keep up, but found herself keeping pace with Kojiro as he had fumbled around with his weapon. Surprising to both of them, Kagae managed to bolt beyond either one of them, not far behind the Hare.
This effectively splits the party: Kojiro and Masuyo further behind the rest, while Kagae is hot on Denbe's heels.
--------------------
@ Kojiro and Masuyo:
You lose track of the others, as well as your exact placement in the city. The castle is still a decent landmark though, but at the moment, you don't know where you are.
As a result of Kojiro's roll, he does not hear any traces of other people, friendly or otherwise, in their vicinity.
--------------------
@ Denbe and Kagae:
Kagae, you will be in a position to help Denbe if he needs it, but you are a couple rounds behind him. You don't see him, but can hear him not too far away from where you are.
Denbe, the pale man ducks down an alleyway which he is confident will lead to his escape from you - only to find himself cornered. As you round into the alleyway, he whirls around and draws a type of blade you don't recognize - like some sort of curved gaijin tanto.
Scenario/Advantages: Dead End, no escape routes, katana drawn, help too far for timely arrival.
"Tell me, who are you?! What are you doing here?!" he shouts out at the Hare, eyes narrowed on Denbe.

Kojiro was flabbergasted as he saw the Crab speed past him. " I think that's the fastest I've ever seen him go. Heh. If it's any consolation I don't think they'll know where they are when they're done chasing down whatever."
The Scorpion grimaced as he examined the area. " Maybe if we could get to our resting spot from the night before, we can figure out something? I know I want to try seeing if the rain left any paths where I found Asako-sama's things."

"I am Ujina Denbe of the Hare Clan, here at the behest of the Jade Magistrates to investigate the death of Magistrate Asako Shusui."
The Hare spoke loudly and firmly- as close as his voice came with any frequency to commanding, slowly lowering his katana... less threatening, but still a perfectly viable striking position, left hand lingering at the pommel with his fingers loose and open.
"I must demand you identify yourself and put your weapon away immediately. If you do not cooperate with our investigation, you will leave me little choice but to assume you are of those responsible for Asako-sama's murder."

@ Kojiro and Masuyo:
Masuyo, you can hear the distant and becoming-more-distant sounds of Kagae's klink klink klink klink of his armor.
You think you must have overshot where you thought they were going - you were heading west, and they are southeast of your position. It'll be hard to pinpoint where exactly, but you could lead Kojiro to the general area. It'll take a couple minutes.
--------------------
@ Denbe, and soon Kagae:
"But we are, you stupid samurai. Not that that matters anymore."
A successful courtier roll did manage to get blame out of him. Though, it didn't stop him from bringing his blade up to his throat to where the jawline met his neck and slowly yet drag it through the flesh. Blood would pour across his robes like a miniature waterfall as he would drop his blade to the ground. His eyes were wide with panic as he fell to his knees, then his expression was masked as he fell face-first to the ground. His blood would quickly begin to pool around him.
Kagae! You show up about 20 seconds after this happens!

Huffing and puffing Kagae would eventually reach where Denbe was to find a dead cultist.
"Oh! That's just great Denbe-san! You killed him! Ever heard of the phrase 'dead men tell no tale'? What can we hope to learn now? Our current and only lead is lying in a pool of his blood while we're not even one step closer to finding the people who killed Asako-sama."

The Hare tightened his grip on his sword as the man raised his hand- and then his eyes widened.
"Damn-!"
The Hare sprinted forward, but not in time to reach the man before he started to collapse, blood pooling out rapidly. Forgetting any hope of saving him with his neck spurting, the Hare just tried to rip the robe open and search his person for anything that could give him more information on who or what he was. Moving quickly, and trying not to get too much blood over himself, finding what little he could before the body stopped ticking and started to grow colder. After all, touching a dying body wasn't the same as touching a dead one.
Ignoring Kagae, and quickly concluding his search as the man's organs all started to realize blood wasn't flowing anymore and shut down one by one, Denbe dropped the man back to the ground before there was any more honor loss to come of it, wiping what blood he could off himself as he stood.
"Oh, but we already have," the Hare said with an impatience more aimed at himself and their dead man than the Crab, "He confessed before the deed. And we know he's not here alone. Now the question is... will the rest be rushing toward us or running away?"
He asked, trying to peer around the corner out of the ally as discreetly as possible to see if there were any signs of anyone coming toward them from one direction or another. After all, it wouldn't do to become cornered themselves.
