"Yes," she replied monotonously. "I felt something missing."
[Her face showed no expression, and her voice held no emotion.]
"The soul of my mate. The souls of my bretheren, whom you ripped away from the earth for nobody else's gain but your own."
[She did not move from where she stood.]
"I did not come for vengeance. That will come to me when your cold hearts are rejected by the skyspirits into oblivion. I came to return a meaningless cat to her family. Because no soul, no matter how insignificant in truth or in your eyes, will ever perish without me trying to save them."
Her eyes narrowed and she continued, "So I suggest you cram your philosophy about the beauty of snow up the beak of some drone who gives a flap."

[Spadestripe nodded to caw and this time held onto Goldenkit and Fallingkit.]
"Whoaaaah...Isn't it all fluffy and chilly, Smokekit?"
[Lostkit mewed. Smokekit nodded. Spadestripe huffed and set down the two as she ushered Smokekit and Lostkit forwards.]
"You two have to be very, very quick!"
[Spadestripe's eyes darted around in search of a small place to take shelter from the rumbling eagles. She spotted a large rock that covered a dip beneath it. She flicked her ears towards it.]
"Follow me, all of you. Lostkit, you're bigger, so help Smokekit, okay? Do NOT let him fall behind."
[Spadestripe grabbed up Fallingkit and Goldenkit and bolted over, sniffing at the hole. Small opening, large inside. A large fox's den, maybe. The scent of fox was at least three moons old stale, so Spadestripe squeezed inside. She set Fallingkit and Goldenkit against one side of the underground den.]
"Do not move a muscle until I come back."
[Spadestripe backed up out of the den and shook her pelt, running back to retrieve her other two kits. Lostkit was trying to bring Smokekit up, who had fallen in the snow. Spadestripe's eyes widened.]
Oh, no...
"Smokekit?"
[Spadestripe mewed harshely. The kit's only motion was shivers.]
"I-I tried to help him up, I really did, momma!"
[Lostkit mewed, looking scared for his brother's fate.]
"He's just sick...follow me, and go as fast as you can, okay?"
[Lostkit nodded. Spadestripe picked up the shivering Smokekit and the remaining went into the den. Spadestripe's kits shivered, and the queen worried deeply for her remaining kits' safety.]
"Everyone, come gather by me."
[She instructed, setting Smokekit between her forepaws. Loskit snuggled up by her right leg and Fallingkit on the opposite side. Lostkit raised his head.]
"Is Smokekit going to be like Goldenkit? Goldenkit is so quiet...he won't talk to us no matter how loud we talk."
[Spadestripe's heart broke to hear Lostkit mew the words.]
"Something's....happened to Goldenkit...that's why he's...not talking. You'll both understand it one day."
[Smokekit soon re-awakened, with a small sneeze that sent a tremor through his tiny body.]
"There we go, all better...are you okay?"
[Smokekit nodded.]
"Yeah, ma, I'm fine..."
[Spadestripe narrowed her eyes slightly.]
"You most certaintly are NOT fine. You're shivering faster than a rabbit can run!"
"What's a -"
[Smokekit sneezed again.]
"-rabbit?"
"You'll learn about those later...why didn't you tell me you were cold and tired?"
[Smokekit looked off at the small opening of the fox den, unwanting to reply. Lostkit spoke up for him.]
"He didn't want you to worry him, momma."
[Spadestripe blinked, furrowing her brows.]
"Next time, Smokekit, you speak up to me. You hear?"
[Smokekit nodded without a word. Spadestripe glanced up through the hole, perking her ears.]
I have to listen hard, or I won't know when to escape...

I will be the lightning... _____________________________________
[The shadow smiled sadistically at Caw. She obviously didnt seem to catch on to the message she had tried to send without the other catching on.] "Thats your problem caw. You only see the small picture. Every little thing has a meaning. I was trying to make a subtle message, but it would seem you are thicker then i thought.
Your mate's death was an act of treason among the assassins.
Only we, the shadows know of this, we see all and aspire to know all. If you wish to know the truth you must listen to the subtle messages. Unfortunately it would seem that is pointless, i might as well just tell it to a drone after all." [She said with a sly smile on her dark face. She stepped back into the darkness, out of sight and without a trace, all that was left was the circle she had drawn in the snow.] "I really wished we could have chatted abit more Caw, share my secrets with you, but it is obvious you have no ability to reason. Finish her." [Black arrows shot out from every direction, repeatedly hammering her over the head again and again and again.] _____________________________________ ...that strikes you out of the sky, Avalon.

It wasn't that she was thick. Now, that was just an insult. She was trying to force these birds to leave, to keep the spotted cat safe. She couldn't trust what they said, anyhow. She knew spies. They never told the truth if they could help it.
The world exploded in pain as her head was hammered. She was knocked back and forth, and felt her power draining. She almost felt like giving up, and then her mate's voice surfaced.
Never give up, Caw. Fight for the truth where you can find it. Don't trust those who lie. When you feel as if all hope is gone, just remember the shadows that watch over you and push on. Our ancestors leave shadows on this world to remind us of the similar steps their talons took, the same flight the beats of their wings took, and your shadow will always be under you, guiding and aiding you.
Don't forget the shadows, Caw.
Caw stirred in the flurry of feathers and claws. Her shadow wasn't visible in the mayhem.
She let out a screech.]
"SHADOW!!"
[There was an explosion of wings. Her powerful wings whirled around, spinning her in a circle. The world was a blur of blood and claws. And then-there-there was an opening. She shot out of it, torn and tattered but not dead. As she shot up, she twisted around in a death dive and pummeled into a couple of birds trying to regroup. Her beak ripped into its flesh and she once more thrashed, crippling and then killing the bird in two instants. The other birds tore at her, but she turned, her talons flashing.
In a quick move, she grabbed another bird with her talons and began to spin, flapping around in the air in circles. The bird was wrenched around, and she felt the satisfying crack of bone. The others clawed at her. She saw one attempt a death dive, but pulled her captive up in time to shield her. Her captive was killed instantly by the missed attack.
Immediately, she thrust herself at the attacker, grabbing at its chest. One of her talons took hold, and using her beak and strong talon, she snapped its neck as well.
As she was fighting, her shadow seemed to be off time with her movements. It seemed to be flapping on its own sometimes, and even seemed to n** at other birds, distracting them for a few crucial moments in order to give Caw an opening to kill. But it could just be an illusion...
Three birds were killed in succession. The others did not let up. True assassins, she thought briefly before attacking again.
She felt herself being wrenched back in the hold of another bird, but she easily whipped around and dug into its neck with her beak. It let go in fear and rage and she completed the job by breaking its neck. The others clawed at her some more.
By now, her injured wing was severely damaged, and her back was bleeding profusely. However, she did not notice and turned on the remaining three birds.
After a few more rounds of attacks, two were heavily injured and the other lay dead. Caw herself now had a broken wing, a huge open wound on her back, and several cuts all over her body. The remaining two limped forward, but she stepped back with narrowed eyes.]
"Leave me alone," she screeched. "LEAVE!!"
[The bird's shadow was strangely larger than her body. It may have been the light, but the other two bird's shadows were not so swollen. Her shadow flickered despite the fact that she was standing still, twitched somehow on its own, and then stood still, matching her movements. The fleeting movement went unnoticed by Caw.]+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=...I found your body drained of life and so began my sorrow's strife....Echoes of memories I cannot redeem.

I will be the lightning... _____________________________________
[The shadows retreated back into the thickest darkness and glared their golden eyes at her, eyes filling with hate. Raven snarled as Caw brutally slaughters her minions without a hint of remorse. She spread her wings and prepared for a killing blow when Fester swooped in to the bloody sight. His beak hung open in a look of dead and terror at the horrible sight. He looked over at Caw, covered in blood, the obvious culprit. He looked at her with pain in his eyes but said nothing as he stepped over looking for survivors. Raven glared at the doctor as if he was crazy.]
"Fester, step out of the way." [The doctor looked up from his search and looked at her with a calm look.] "Raven, i understand your rage but everything must come to an end. Let me do my work and you do yours. You are not an assassin, you are a shadow, you are to watch from the shadows and collect data. My job is to save as many lives as possible."
[Raven squawked with rage as she made a hasty retreat with her shadows following behind her as she dispapread into the night that she had once came. Fester stepped over to a fallen shadow who was bleeding massively from the neck and immediately began to sooth the eagle into a peaceful rest as he began easing pain and wrapping up wounds. He would work in the cold for the remainder of the night until he had saved as much as he could.
He looked up from his work to see Caw. For a while he stared at her, wondering if show would allow him to get close enough to heal her injures. He decided against it and continued searching the bodies o the fallen shadows.] _____________________________________ ...that strikes you out of the sky, Avalon.

The world was seeping away from her, dripping onto icey cold snow and melting away. She tried to remember what was happening, where she was.
But it was slipping.
Her head throbbed.
She breathed deeply, trying to calm herself. Where was she? What was going on? There was something she couldn't forget, and she felt a wave of intense horror and fear at forgetting it. She looked down and saw her shadow.
Shadow.
Memories of the bird flooded back to her.
Yes. She felt relief wash over her. She had remembered him. But there was other things, too. She blinked, trying to remember. There was a spotted cat. And another bird. And more birds. And blood...she looked around her and saw Fester tending to the wounds of mottled figures.
She stared at the bodies placidly.
I did that, she recalled blankly.
Hauling herself back up, she limped wordlessly to one of the bodies. Leaning in closely, she began to whisper a prayer as she closed the widened eyes of the dead bird.]
"May the spirits light your path to the sky and guide you through the night. May you be free of the crimes you suffered and live well and joyously as one with the air. May your soul rest peacefully in the sky free of all worldly pain and suffering.
Forgive me for prematurely ending your life before the spirits could gently take you in old age; By my word, it was for the benefit of another soul.
Chirp, cherup, chup. Fly free in the sky."
[As she spoke, her breath let out billowing clouds of heat into the crisp air. She stood and hobbled over to each body, muttering the same prayer and closing the eyes of the birds she killed without a glance at Fester.](( At the "chirp, cherup, chup" part, she's actually making those sounds, not saying them. .3. [Out of the three fallen shadows only one struggled to stay alive. As the sun finally began to peak over the horizon Fester was beginning to stabilize his wounds so that he might stand a chance on the trip back to the old cannon. Fester could hear Caw mutter her prayer to each of the three fallen shadows. The doctor nodded in appreciation but kept his stern look. Building up courage, with the remainder of his medicines he walked over to her and offered her some medicine and bandages.]
"Here, this will make your flight home a less painful and hopefully more pleasant one." [He said in a calm voice as he lifted one of the eagle's up onto his back.] "As for me i have to leave if shade is to have a chance. I must leave immediately while his strength holds out." [The eagle opened his large, raggedy wings as he took to the skis and flew back to his cold, rocky cannon with hast.] _____________________________________ ...that strikes you out of the sky, Avalon.

How do I know it's not poison? was her first thought, but then she wondered, wait, why would he poison me? He's my flockmate.
She peered after him, feeling confusion running through her. Where's he going with that bird...?
Things were all too blurry. She could only remember something at a distance...Avalon and Talon...something happened. Talon had left with a few other birds from the flock, but he and his friends were small in numbers. Avalon would be rid of them soon, no worries, all she had to do was kill him and the others would come back to her. Right?
But something was wrong. Why would Fester join them? This was not good! If Fester was on their side, then it would be harder to defeat them. Suddenly, a meager resistiance seemed to be turning into a rebellion.
But wait. This all sounded familiar. Like...she had been through this before.
She shook her head, letting out a sigh, and turned back. The spotted cat. She was taking it somewhere. To the Clans? Yes. Those Clans...she couldn't remember where they were. She let out a moan. She couldn't remember where they were!
She limped forward, her eyes searching.]
