"I guess I'm a bit of both." he'd taken on all the jobs of the typical family the last few seasons. Sure it bothered him his mother and father were gone, but instead of brooding about it he spent most of his energy on making up for what Terra was left out of. He didn't dawn an apron and bake sweets like his mother used to do, but he tried his paw at all the main responsibilities that parents usually dealt with. "Somebeast help me when she decides to start dating." he shuddered at the thought.

"We're just all we have. I can't help but be a bit protective of her."

Jamie laughed even more at Ather shuddering at the thought of Terra dating. "Really? She hasn't yet? How old is she?" He shook his head a little.

He ran a paw through his headfur, glancing to the nearby stairwell. "Well, I can jolly well imagine how you were thrust into this responsibility, but I think you need to let her grow up, not for her, but for your own freedom too, wot. Know what I'm sayin' mate?"

He stretched an arm across his chest, yawning. He hadn't slept in awhile. He'd been out all night on the recon missions, and hadn't caught a nap like Eula had before the council. He glanced out the window. It was still light out... he'd make it a couple more hours. "Anyhow, jus' saying you should try livin' instead of fretting over your sister. I'm sure she can take care of herself."

"Too old." he crossed his arms on the table and dropped his head into them. He could hear Jamie even though he wasn't looking at him. He was quite tired himself; though there wasn't much going on in the infirmary now, Jasmine had been making sure Ather was prepared for anything and everything they were going to get when the battle injuries started coming in. Not to mention the Historian was getting worse and required an extra paw or two. He tried to keep the thought out of his mind.

"Stop being so knowledgeable. Makes me look bad." he mumbled from behind his arms. He lifted his head up and gave Jamie a small smile.

Eula had spent some time venting her frustrated energy on helping set up the defenses and bossing others around. It seemed like she was waiting for someone to argue with her, but instead of annoying those she was bossing around, she was getting an unprecedented level of respect. Unaccustomed to this new deference, she was brought up short.

It soon occurred to her where this friendliness was coming from when she was cornered by a small assembly (No doubt appointed by the rest of the woodlanders) bombarding her with questions about Radaz, the council, the riddle and her dreams. As was her style in such situations, she vaguely dodged all the questions and realized it was now her time to leave for the evening.

After a brief glimpse about the grounds and Great Hall, she assumed Donato was still wrapped up in the nursery. She thought she'd go get something to eat, but was then brought back by a desire to see Donato. She hadn't really spoken to him since before her recon mission. She trudged down a few corridors to the nursery, intending to visit him. When she arrived outside the door, it occurred to her the danger she would be walking into. From one overenthusiastic group of curious creatures to another. Instead, she leaned back against the wall and slid to a seated position. It was safer out here. Donato shouldn't be too much longer.

--------------

Turan found himself in much the same predicament as Eula. He kept having to force the others to concentrate on their duties rather than bother him with questions which, frankly, he didn't have the answers to. Periodically giving out orders, he watched the dipping sun, wanting to finish this all up soon for the night. Leaning against the northern walltop for a bit by himself, he gazed down at the scattered pieces of the village in it's early stages. He had voted against dragging the immense amount of supplies in the abbey for fear of leaving the Redwallers exposed outside of the abbey walls. It occurred to him how useful all the stone and wood might be in the coming days. He'd have to think about that.

----------

Tannia was also looking down from a walltop, up on the south ramparts. It was quiet, uneventful on that end. She had removed herself from the evening's duties already, tired, and wanting to be left to her own thoughts for awhile.

Why was she even going back? There was nothing she had to apologize for. Ather was the one who needed to apologize, treating her like some little dibbun who couldn't walk on her own footpaws. The nerve of him! Even though Terra knew her brother was being completely out of line, she still found herself back to the Great Hall as if going to apologize. She was in the process of walking back to the Great Hall, but half way there she'd turn back around and shake her head. But then she'd come back, only to turn away half way there once more. Back and forth, two steps forward, one step back. It was silly and she knew it. But when her and Ather were in a disagreement with each other it always made her feel odd. Like she had a thorn in her paw. They were siblings yes but they rarely fought about anything. This had obviously been the one exception. She did this double take a few more times before catching sight of Eula. Ah, just the distraction she needed. The haremaiden stopped in front of the nursery, and that was when Terra moved toward her. She stood in front of her, paws on her hips as she leaned down, "Not my first choice for a resting spot, but hey, if the smell of little dibbuns makes you happy..." she shrugged. It would seem Eula's sarcasm had rubbed off on the raccoon. Either that or she already had an attitude and a half to being with...
PostPosted: Thu Oct 18, 2007 11:12 pm

Eula's gaze slid up, observing the intrusion upon her silent reflections. Seeing Terra standing before her, she smirked a little. "Oh yes, I love the little things, didn't you know?" she replied dryly.

She turned an anxious eye on the closed nursery door. "Actually, I'm waiting for Donato to finish up for the evening and come out for a walk. I haven't really gotten a chance to talk to him lately."

She returned her attention to Terra with raised eyebrows. Talk about someone she hadn't spoken with much lately. It occurred to her how awkward that sounded, her wanting to see Donato when she already spent so much more time with him than with Terra.

Seeking to make amends to this situation, she drew the raccoon into a conversation. "So how has your day been?"

"You're Redwall's most capable mother candidate, if you ask me." she gave a wink, knowing this was nothing further from the truth. Who knew if Eula wanted a dibbun of her own. If she did, it would be seasons and seasons from now.

She gave a nod at the mention of Donato, "We're not really supposed to be wandering around you know, in these times of war it's unsafe." Terra saying this was a joke in itself. Eula? Following rules? Hahah. It didn't upset her to think she hadn't spent much time with Eula lately. With the whole abbey a bustle with the new village and war chatter on their brains, Terra hadn't really noticed.

She took a seat beside Eula, losing track of whatever she had been doing before. She gave a long, irritated sigh as she recalled her day. "Frustrating, to say the least."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 18, 2007 11:31 pm

Eula lifted her knees and placed her cheek against them, looking over at Terra. "Frustrating? Really? Join the club. Other members include everyone else currently inside of Redwall."

Eula smirked a little at that, but decided to give Terra the floor now. "What happened anyway?"

She laughed a bit. Eula did have a point. Everyone seemed to be on edge lately. "I got into an argument with Ather about me fighting in the war." it seemed silly saying it out loud; she should just fight despite what her brother thought. But having her brother's approval meant a lot to her. "He wants me to just sit in the infirmary and let everyone else fight. But I can't do that...I won't."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 18, 2007 11:52 pm

Eula nodded slowly, alternating between listening to Terra and glancing at the door any time she heard a noise coming from that direction. She sighed a little at the raccoon's predicament. "I know your brother's opinion is important to you, but you're old enough to make your own decisions now. If there was any other authority telling you that you couldn't fight, you'd ignore them. Ather certainly isn't an authority figure for you. If you choose not to fight - don't. If you do, then do. It's not Ather's choice. He needs to grow up some, too."

Eula said what Terra already knew, but it was nice to hear it from someone else. Her brother seemed to be the only one to not see things the way Terra did. But he was her brother, of course he'd see things differently. "I'm going to fight. I know that much already." she sighed, "When the scorpions attacked my home I was too young to to anything...but now I'm older and I want to help. I'm not going to sit back and let more die." as close as her and Eula had become over the years, they usually didn't talk about serious things. But they were close enough that, if the situation came up, they could converse without anything feeling uncomfortable.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 19, 2007 12:26 am

"It's perfectly sound reasoning to me," Eula replied lightly. "Don't worry too much about Ather. I think he'll find himself wrapped up enough in his own responsibilities soon to bother you so much. And maybe he'll feel better about our situation when the Long Patrol arrives to help."

Provided we last until they come, she added mentally.

"Anyway, you're a skilled enough archer. Tannia's going to need your abilities among the rampant battling ignorance that we have on our side in the coming days."

"I'm hoping he'll come to his senses soon. Because he knows as well as I do I'm fighting whether he wants me to or not. It would just be nice to have his support, you know?" as calm as Terra seemed to be talking about fighting, she still had her doubts. Redwall was strong, but they had taken large blows before. No one knew what this war would bring. And something about the feel around Redwall wasn't comforting. Like everyone was waiting for something terrible to happen.

"I haven't spoken to Tannia yet, but I think she already knows I'm going to help her on the ramparts." they had arched in the past together, and the hairmaiden had given her tips here and there to help further her skills. For her age, she wasn't half bad.

((Gah, sorry I'm not here so often))

((Out of all of us I have the lamest excuse, LITERALLY, lol))

Either that or we could stick an eyepatch over ya ann say yar me lucky-go self, wot?!

::There was a voice that could wake up a dozen sleeping dibbuns, as one paw pulled into view, and then another, and slowly, another raccoon's face hauled itself slowly, latching over the open window, as Dux beamed at both of them:: Wotcher!

::And then, with a look of concentration including her tongue sticking out at one side, FLIPPED backwards through the window, promptly landing on a small table that had been left there for linens of sorts, and as if nothing had happened, just stood up, dusted herself off, and extracted a half-eaten apple from her knapsack and bit contently into it, as the one-eyed Raccoon settled sights on Eula, gulping down what she had in her mouth::

Yer lady abbess sez she was looking for 'er recorder, so I sez i's not really time to start playin' music, ann 'en she goes ann sez i's important ann to go find you ann any other brainy selves round the abbey...

::She raised the apple again, squinted at it suddenly before rubbing it vigorously on her coat and taking one more bite::

Ma'e aby shenshe to ya? ::She asked between the chunks of apple in her mouth::

The nursery door opened suddenly, and judging by Donato's expression, Dux's voice had woken a few dibbuns. "What's going on out here?" Donato demanded in an irritated whisper. He looked at the assembly on his doorstep. "Oh." In a curious but still quiet voice, he asked again, "What's going on out here?"
