"We should be thorough." Kojiro mused. "It would be best to use what we have of the lantern while we have it. Also, if there is any lead here that can indicate where the murderers of Asako-sama went to or where Shosuro-san disappeared to, then we'll be that much closer to finding them."

"Agreed. We might as well turn up anything we possibly can. Searching won't do us much good if we miss something..." the Hare said, following after the Scorpion and methodically digging through anything and everything they come across, seeing always a little on edge when opening a door or rounding a corner.

Masuyo couldn't offer a better suggestion, so she simply added another pair of eyes to the search. Unfortunately not quite as thorough as the others while she was paranoiedly expecting something to find them first.

Masuyo and Kagae do not find anything during their part of the search, possibly to not being quick enough to the punch, and possibly because there's nothing obvious like an army or something.
Kojiro and Denbe, however, would find a few things. For the most part, signs of habitation that WASN'T recent. Mostly human, with an occasional abandoned animal nest. Apparently, many travelers have used this castle on their way by as a stopping ground to rest, and never bothered to clean up after themselves. Namely, in the rooms with windows, all of which have been closed up long ago, so no natural light permeates anywhere.
You find some coins that were probably zeni at one point, but had been coated with rust that they are worthless.
The treasury is definitely a point of interest. The large wooden doors were busted to splinters, and the entire vault was emptied.
A few pieces of armor lay clattered on some floors, the straps rotted away. The weapons are all gone.
Most notably though, is towards the end of the journey, with only a few minutes of oil left for the lantern, the door blocking the way to the basement remains closed off, barricaded and locked, with no sign of the key. The lock itself has corroded somewhat and could be easily broken.
Fubuki stops and growls at the door, his hair standing on end.

The Scorpion's hand instinctively slid to the hilt of his katana as the little fox growled. "If there are spare light sources to be had, now's the time to use them...." Kojiro let out a short laugh. "This looks too old to be used by either Asako-sama's killers or Miyako.....should we check it?"

The Hare freezes, looking from the only structure blocking anything that seemed to remain fully intact. Looking at the fox, he frowns deeply and starts to tense up, as if expecting something vile to begin creeping out through the keyhole, or out from under it, at any moment.
"I think we may have found what we're looking for," he said quietly. If indeed there was anything to find here, at least, they'd found it. Even if it might well be no more than the nest of a larger animal.
Looking to the lantern light flickering, he glanced away from the door for a moment. "Here, Bayushi-san," he said, pulling out the torch and holding it his way, so he could light it with the lantern some time before it went out. "I'll be but a moment. Might as well see if we can get more," and he'd go only so far as the light would faintly glow around the corners, or down the hall. If there was any sign of another torch or anything else they could use to keep light, he'd remove it and bring it back quickly, more concerned with gathering them quickly than finding every flame-worthy torch in the area.
Not that it should have taken long at all, given that they had light now and he'd already been through the hall, unless there was rubble it could be beneath or such.

Kojiro would light the torch that he was given, snuffed the lantern to save what was left of it's oil, and look worriedly at Masuyo and Kagae. He had no idea what was in that basement, but he hoped he was appropriately wary. Kami knew Fubuki was.

On one hand, she couldn't help but marvel at morbid tranquility of the place. On the other hand, she was still quite sure something was going to jump out at them. Her fears never came to fruition, but when they arrived at that final door, well... she almost wished they had. She cast a concerned look down to her companion and kneeled down to offer him comfort before closing her eyes and concentrating on the air behind the door. She wanted to know exactly what Fubuki knew.

@ Masuyo:
Upon successful casting of your Sense spell, targeting the air kami beyond the door.
The air is stagnant, old, musty. It is colder than the rest of the castle too. There are no air kami present, which is not unusual as they need a constant flow of motion to continue existing and a barricaded area will cause them to diminish and disappear.

Masuyo glowered. "It doesn't feel as if anything has moved in there for a long time. It is cold, though..."
She moved right up against the door and tried again, hoping to get a sense for how large the area might be.

@ Masuyo:
This time, a Sense Earth spell would reveal the stonework on the other side. A hall or tunnel, with stairs, leading downward beyond the range of the spell.
There didn't seem to be any earth kami there either, which was a bit more unusual in this case, figuring the stonework of the castle and all. There were earth kami sleeping as part of the structure on THIS side of the door, but not the other side.

@ Denbe:
You do not find any more torches. There may have been some lying around, but this place has been picked clean of resources.

"Right. Maybe when Ujina-san gets back, we could check it out."
The Scorpion was debating the best way to enter the area. Smashing the lock should do it, but the lock might be useful later....

Her expression only got worse. Though she wasn't necessarily mumbling, it would be hard to tell whether she was actually informing the party or if they were just lucky she happened to be thinking out loud, "Stairs... means there could be another way in, but... it's more'n just the air. It's all dead. Not a single kami dares pass this threshold."
At long last she turned to face the other Bushi, a look of worry etched on her face. She had never encountered something like this.. never even imagined its possibility. If this was only the smallest taste of the true Shadowlands, she felt the growing urge to go home right now and never look back.
...if only. They had a missing courtier to recover, and she could not bring herself to leave this place until she knew that gorgeous woman was safe. With that in mind she stepped away from the door in case one of the intrepid Bushi decided to break it down.
