Tam laughs. "I am not so emotional about such things, I both buy and make as the case maybe... selecting the gift to match the receiver... but in many ways, when I gift someone anything I have made, it is because they are one of my closest of friends... for in a way it is a giving of oneself... when you create that which you give."

*Hopian nods*

Exactly the belief my people hold....have you seen what I have for Kero's party? And don't worry...underwater, he can't hear us.

"Seen it, no... but ye spoke of it. A collar, I believe... and something else... ear clips perhaps... I was worried at first, fearing our gifts would over ride each other... but I am merely crafting cuffs for him, one enchanted the other not. I've already given him his ring... for that is a personal private gifting and I didn't wish to wait." says Tam combing the edge of the water for another piece of wood. Finding a likely looking driftwood knot, he continues to work as he speaks.

*Hopian nods*

Traditionally, when a miner comes of age, he is given three pieces of jewelry, as we value jewelry and crystals above all material treasures. We are miners, after all. It used to be you wore the metal of your status...your profession. A Hunter would wear brass, to blend in with the sand...while a digger wore bronze, for the earth itself. Obviously, our royalty wore gold, and our nobles silver. Copper was for the average Shoue. Nowadays, everyone wears the metals they want...only the king is still required to receive a gold set at his coming of age. The three pieces are a collar, bracelets, and a tail spiral...a worked spiral of near pure metal, designed to lend support to our flexible tails...plus they look good...and if you are making bracelets for Kero, so much the better.

Tam nods as he examines the knot closely, deciding it looked like two animals entwined and begins to rough out the piece. "My cuffs are a bit wider then most bracelets though, being based on a wire mesh I once saw. I wanted something that will grow with him and these will be adjustable... so that he can wear them close to the skin... less chance of him catching them on anything."

*Hopian nods*

A good majority of our jewelry is fashioned like that, or is made adjustable...we wear ours close by necessity, after all...

Tam smiles in agreement. "It would be difficult to do any sort of digging wearing things that are loose. They would only get in the way. Anyway, one cuff will be primed to accept whatever enchantment he wishes to put on it. The other carries a protective charm and a means to summon me, if he has need to do so."

As he works the root he begins to see clearly the shapes it carries within. Two small cubs play fighting over a ball.

"I... I hope so." says Tam quietly. "Hope, he asked me to awaken him when he reached the age of 20. But he's maturing at a rate far faster than any of us thought he would. This isn't going to cause problems, is it?"
PostPosted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:30 pm

*Hopian shakes his head*

No...not one bit...likely, he'll figure out what he is by the time he's eighteen, but we aren't considered functioning adults until we turn twenty...he'll just be a little more mature than most teenagers, that's all...and you don't have to deal with the problems that some humans have to deal with...be thankful for that...

Tam nods, his face thoughtful and a touch grim. "Perhaps not... but there is one problem I will share with them none the less... though for me it will be of a permanent form... more akin to the separation caused by the death of one's child." He looks up with a slow sad smile. "Once he regains his memories... his life as the cub will be lost to him... as it should be. The cub... this cub... the one I have come to love as my own... will be gone. It's not that I will love the elder any less for giving me this opportunity to know him better."

*Hopian shakes his head*

You really are silly, aren't you...did you really think Kero would do that to you...he will always be the cub you have raised...the potion is the essence of his power...distilled to a single drink...it will reawaken his memories, and grant his power to him, but nothing more...he chose you because you could change him, Talesian...and he will always be your cub...

"Then he has had the love of many many parents over the years, has he not?" says Tam grinning. "Ye'd think that one of them would have broken his language problem by now... wouldn't ye?"

*Hopian laughs*

Let's see....Jor...Rhea....You...Honorian....Tes, Yes, Tes....A few of the other Gem-children, though never Safirea...He was raised once by Regalion, the Wyvern king....and he's nbeen taken in by a few human families along the way....and none of them ever managed to beat it....

rolleyes Tam chuckles. "Well, I'm not giving up... I may not have broke him of it completely... but it's not as bad as it was.... thank heavens. It's like I've always said. "It's not what you say as how ye say it and to whom yer speaking.... and he's beginning to see what I'm talking about..." he pauses for a moment then adds with a soft laugh. "I hope...."
