Physical Description: Veltanna’s platinum blonde hair and grey eyes aren’t what make her stand out. It is that she is a tall 6 feet and not a small lady in any way. She has broad shoulders, wide hips, and large breasts. Basically had she been on Earth she would be described as a viking or a valkyrie.
Personality: Almost everything for this girl is a game. Customs and rules are simply the guidelines of the game. Culture the framework and the world the board. Veltanna likes to be the one in charge of the game and is known to try and boss around the other children with mixed success. The girl is easily bored and will quickly move on if the bossing doesn’t work. But not all games are fun. She can pout up a storm when she wants to not do something but if someone knows how to frame it as a challenge…well now. You have this girl’s attention. A good teacher will use that against the girl and she might never even know.
Veltanna is full of energy and wants to do everything in the world with that energy. It is just hard to focus the girl at times. If it takes too long, if the task is tedious or monotonous, then she will loose focus and wander off without a good guiding hand. There is always more to do, more to learn. No reason to be bored. She is smart and good at finding or creating solutions but she doesn’t apply herself unless inspired to. Can she make the thing do a thing? What about if this changes? Or maybe if this…okay bored now. It is probably a good thing she gets bored easily because sometimes the thing she is experimenting with is actually a person. But sometimes she comes back when she gets bored of the next thing.
Positive Trait List: Loves challenge, inventive, energetic
Negative Trait List: puckish, easily bored, domineering
History: Veltanna is the daughter of a green rider who, while quick to drop her daughter in the Creche, was not completely absent from her daughter’s life. She was the product of a goldflight, Zamiath’s final flight, and her mother likes to call her the last gift of Zamiath’s. Veltanna likes to point out that there are a number of kids from that flight and Zamiath only had a tangental cause to her being here. Still the girl loved her sentimental mother and is known to surprise the woman with odd gifts. In return the mother surprises her daughter.
One of those surprises was a bow and arrow set when Veltanna was eight. She had been watching archers and coveting their skills and Veltanna’s mother decided it was a good skill to have. She arranged for one of the dragon riders to teach Veltanna. Veltanna excelled at it. It focused her on something besides spreading chaos much to the creche workers’ relief but it did come with its own set of issues. Now Veltanna wanted to roam to be able to use her bow. She understood that within the Weyr it was not to be used. A bow is a weapon she knew and had no desire to harm anyone. But as soon as she could she would be beyond the outskirts to practice.
Veltanna is proud to have V’mel as her father. She considers him a brilliant if hard man. She never expected anything from him growing up, nor did she receive anything, but was surprised to learn, upon becoming a candidate, that her mother never told him about her. Veltanna’s solution was to leave clues for the man. With each clue was a flower crown as well. She was quite good at making them and enjoyed sharing the crowns with other children. Veltanna’s hope is that one day the difficult man will put one of the crowns on. It is a very special and very challenging game that only she knows the rules to. It is also a good game in that she can pick it up when she feels like it and let it go when bored.
Candidate life was a mixed lot for Veltanna. On one hand the lessons were interesting and kept her engaged. On the other hand, chores were incredibly boring. She had the bad habit of doing the bare minimum not because she was lazy but because she could not see the point in doing more. Plus there were more interesting things to be done.
Then a few years into her candidacy Thread fell. She couldn’t just abandon the candidacy but she was scared. It took some time for her to come to terms with the concept of risking her life repeatedly should she impress. It seemed worth it though for all that would be gained and all that could be saved.
When in the most recent Threadfall a greenrider died she mourned and worried. It also angered her. She didn’t like this part of the game. It seemed too much like losing. She hadn’t known the greenrider and understood she had died saving the Weyrwoman. So, maybe they had won? It still seemed unfair. It was all very confusing and Veltanna was conflicted on her goals at the moment.
