The War of Spirits - 1143
5/22/12 - 5/23/12
Current Score CRAB - 28 gold, 5.5 glory. MANTIS - 26 gold, 4.0 glory. LION - 18 gold, 3.5 glory. PHOENIX - 16 gold, 3.0 glory. DRAGON - 17 gold, 1.5 glory.
--------------------
Kitsu Akahiko would look from the Spine of the World Mountains down at the lands that belonged to the Miya. There has been little word from them since the war started, and the Lion decided to take the fight to the southern half of the empire and re-unite the Imperials.
He stood with the army the Lion had mustered for this purpose while the rest of their numbers were consolidating victories elsewhere. The force was small, but he was duty-sworn to make this work. Much depended on this victory!
However, Akahiko was not prepared for the army that the Spirits already had upon this mountain; though they had not planned for an ambush, the Lion just kind of walked into their position without realizing it. The slaughter that ensued was a vicious one, and not a man was spared from the wrath of the Spirits.
They would not expect their own to return for another couple days. When the Spirit Armies showed up following the Lion's own footprints, it was sure to be a major surprise for the clan.
--------------------
The Crab would now be pushing further into their neighbor's lands, dedicated to the task of securing their borders. The Spirits were becoming a caged animal; no matter what they threw against the Crab, they just kept coming! A cornered beast is the most dangerous kind, and the Crab knew that from centuries of experience.
So when the Crane-trained Yasuki who had defected showed up to negotiate a withdrawal, the intensity of the situation quickly became diffused. The Crab made it clear that they could simply continue taking lands by force, or they could take it by politics. One of those options allowed the Spirits to continue their existence, and one involved tetsubos.
It didn't take much for the Spirits to flounder at the implications. The Crab gave them the appropriate stuff to up and leave, and that's what they did. This would be a good year for the Crab, as they were now defeating the enemy without a single casualty on their side - a flawless victory.
--------------------
The Mantis would not ignore the betrayal the Crab had committed against them. It was unforgivable! This was not the time for infighting, yet here they were, seizing opportunities like mere Ronin! The Mantis may not have been a Great Clan for very long but they had the pride of one, and would not suffer this injustice.
Sailing from their homelands to engage the Crab, they used Air magicks to give them grace of motion and for protection. They tried to use a swift, decisive strike into the Crab holdings here in Yasuki lands to make their point.
When the wind blew against the wall of armor and dissipated uselessly, all that was left was a vicious counter-attack that the Moshi and Yoritomo were not prepared to endure.
When the Mantis Ships returned a few days later, their brothers and sisters were likewise not prepared for the Crab that dismounted and demanded compensation for the insult against them.
--------------------
Ebisu, the Fortune of Honest Work, had watched the Phoenix with interest. They struggled and struggled and struggled some more, and they had lost so much in the process. Yet, rather than give up, despite the forced alliance they had to make with the Spirit Armies, they did not give up. The Elemental Council directed a detachment of their shugenja to aid in the liberation of the capital.
There were several opportunities for the Phoenix to take advantage of their unusual circumstances to gain an advantage over the enemy - but instead, they announced themselves to the Spirits, announced their intentions, and gave them a chance to face them honorably - for the Phoenix would not be willing to die in any other way.
Ebisu had decided that there was enough death the Phoenix had suffered already for their honor. Even in the darkest times they shown brightly, and it was time that he and his kind recognized their efforts...
--------------------
The Dragon had gotten the attention of the Unicorn, which was a wise course of action. However, the obvious pairing to this fortunate news is that they had gotten the attention of the Steel Chrysanthemum as well.
His previous attempts to scale the Dragon mountains had been minimal - it was simply not worth the effort. Now, since the Dragon were involving themselves in this war, they needed to make an example of them.
The Dragon attempted to use evasive maneuvers and careful words when the Spirits suddenly came knocking at their door. They had focused their strategy to a defensive one, which gave them an initial edge in battle. It was when they realized how many numbers Hantei XVI was willing to commit to this that they realized how completely outmatched they were.
It was a battle they would not win by attrition. The Dragon had little choice but to withdraw further into their mountain strongholds and allow the enemy these meager victories for the time being. When they tired of rock climbing, the Dragon would be ready to take their lands back.
