Hopefully she will let you. open canvas is a very simple drawing program that I have never had any issues with, and its much easier to get running then gimp. I'd see if I could get her to let you download thatone first.

ok an update... I suck at rub outs >.> because I don't have the luxury of drawing in my guide lines for my proportions and so on. so heres an update of my most recent attempt at rub outs once again... theres a small improvement since my first version so I'm happy with that at least : )

Oh, kai I think that's beautiful. You managed the play on light and shadow so well. I've never done a rubout before myself. It'd be interesting to try.

That's gawj, Kai, beautifully lit. (Here's where I show my ignorance: what exactly is a rubout?)
Anyways, for stuff that's out of my comfort zone... I told you guys I was more of a musician, right? The other day I made my first attempt at recording anything ever, wanna hear? It's music to a poem by Neil Gaiman, and you have to excuse my inability to sing, okay? =P

I love this thread. Such a brilliant idea! And also something I need very much! XD I did the timed drawing thing. Here. I found that timing myself really helps me to draw. I am a very slow worker in all things, so I knew I wouldn't get very far in just 30 minutes. As for the 5 min drawing, I worked at a much faster pace, and almost got as much done as in 30 minutes! XD I spend a lot of time erasing lines. I just can't be very messy like some people, I just have to erase the lines I don't need or want. I had to push myself to try and complete as much of the drawing in the time limit as possible. Which means that I had to stop myself from obsessing over getting things perfectly right. I had so much trouble with the hands, particularly the one by her shoulder. (You can tell because it really sucks!) I erased it and started over a bunch of times. Eventually I had to make myself stay away from it and work on other things. Surprisingly, as much as I love to draw faces and hair (and they're what I draw the most), I deemed them unimportant in the picture. They just seemed like extras compared to the whole body. hellosara- I liked your music and the singing wasn't bad at all. Kai_Chi- Very nice work! I especially like the face. The shading looks real good.

@ nuna: yea maybe you should try it sometime : ) Its the sort of thing that either you like working with it or you don't. Like I stated I kinda don't like working with it, cause I can't draw lines, which I've come to realize is a huge comfort zone for me, in my drawings cause I'm more sure of myself when I can draw guide lines and stuff. Just wipping out masses of colours and hopping to get the preportions right at the same time is very challenging for me... I have a hard time with it, but maybe it will be a breeze for you : ) like I said, its either you like it or you don't.. worth trying to find out though : D
@ hellosara: Thats ok : 3 I had no idea what it was until recently neither. Rub outs are when you take either pain or charcoal and your fill your board compleatly with one colour. In my case I filled my paper compleatly with black chalk. Then you take a rag or chamois cloth and rub out/ take out masses of that colour, So I'd have a black board, and I'd take out the black to reveal the white paper underneath. : )
Also I LOVE your music clip D: !!! I like your style of signing I listen to music like that all the time. Is that a harp or something in the background??? you have a beautiful voice ^o^ simply angelic! Love it!!! can't wait to hear more of them : D!!!!
@ Nikkic87 : I know the fealing I'm a slower worker as well... but I found your comparison very interesting. I acctually like more your 5 min sketch, I can feel more of the curves in the leg muscles with your 5 min sketch compaired to the 30 min sketch. : D in anycase !!! really nice job!.
Have you ever thought about maybe drawing many hands from different angles and positions to help break that barried in drawing hands when you work on full body pics? It might help, : 3 but your drawing is still very lovely.

Kai_Chi- Thanks! I thought the same thing about the curves, actually! I was quite surprised because I have real trouble with curves. I have a rather unsteady hand, so it usually takes me several tries before I get a smooth curve, but I really wasn't as focused on them in my 5 minute piece.
Just further proof of what I already knew. Over thinking things will ruin them. Nothing drives that point home like my 2 year old nephew making better paintings than me. rofl I think about what I want to make and it comes out like crap. He just splashes paint on the paper and moves his brush through it however he likes with no hesitation and some of them are actually pretty good, as far as abstract goes. Much better than mine, anyway!
I haven't tried that before, but I've been thinking about doing this timed exercise with just hands and other things I specifically have trouble with. I really should. Thanks for the tip!

Kai: It'll take me getting my hands on charcoal first though. XD Most of my art supplies are in storage right now unfortunately. I'm sure I'd find it just as difficult though, since lines have always been a big comfort zone for me as well.

@ Nikkic87: yea over thinking things does that sometimes. I have the same problem as well... that or I expect way to much out of my drawing and when I never achieve the goal I set out to do, I get discourage. : ) But practice makes perfect! so I wish you good luck with your future exercices : D I'm sure you'll get really good at doing the stuff your less proficient in, in no time ^o^!!!
@Nuna: yes having charcoal first would help XD

This isn't the greatest thing in the world but I am super proud of it. I really challenged myself on the braids, boots, fur, and water especially, and I even added background to it even if it is simple. This is just the product that ended up growing from a 2 minute doodle I took a liking to. I didn't use many references, just for the boots, so a lot is not anatomically correct.
