I originally started learning Japanese because of anime (plus a year of it was compulsory in high school). I ended up loving the language (and learning languages) so I continued with it.

I'm now studying Japanese at university. My uni has a couple of sister-universities in Japan, and next year I'm planning on studying at Chubu University in Japan for the year. We also get a lot of Japanese students coming to the uni to study English, so there's quite a few people to talk to. ♪⌒ヽ(*゚ω゚)ノ ヤッターッ

To be honest, I forgot why I started learning Japanese. It wasn't because of anime because I didn't watch anime when I started learning the language.

At first, my high school was handing out pamplets for the class and I accepted it because you needed at least two years of a foreign language to graduate. I took it, and by surprise, it wasn't as hard as my family made it out to be. After I graduated though I stopped learning for about two years.

It wasn't until I found a friend from doing a 4chan raid (something you wouldn't expect) said he had this program that helps you memorize kanji characters. When I started doing that, something sparked in my head and all of a sudden I wanted to learn Japanese to the point where I was fluent in it.

To this day, I'm curious to as what sparked my extreme interest in the Japanese language.

I'm curious. How much is it going to cost for you to study at Chubu Uni?

I'm curious. How much is it going to cost for you to study at Chubu Uni?
Depends on whether I'll be getting a scholarship or not, but the up-front cost (accommodation/classes/utilities/catered food in college/textbooks/class fees/health fees/etc) is around AU$5000 for the year. I'm pretty sure that this excludes a mobile/cell phone/keitai though, so you'd have to have enough money to get one and a plan for a year. Most plans are for two years though, and there's usually a fee to cancel it.
Other than that, I think the only other costs would be transport, stuff you want to buy, etc.
There are scholarships for study overseas (the names escape me at the moment though (sorry!)), but if you're going without scholarships you could offer tutoring for a fee, save up like hell before you go, get a part-time job while over there (tricker, but apparently doable. On a student visa you'd only be able to work up to (I think) 28 hours a week though), and I'm really not sure what else xD;;

The cost estimate I have though is from someone in my class who studied there from mid/late-2008 to late-2009, so I'm not sure if the cost has changed at all... but that's what the general up-front cost was when she went.

For me, I've always wanted to learn Japanese. Ever since I was a kid. My parents would never allow me for 1: My stepfather is extremely racist and yeah, and 2: my mother believed that since I was having trouble learning english than taking japanese would not be possible. Now that I am able, in college, I;ve found out that I love the language, culture, ect even more than previously though. I'd like to be able to study abroad but I have to see if im able to do a double major first. Anyways thats why I am learning Japanese. I've just always wanted to.

for me, its because I love everything about japan, its fasianating there because of the four pegs, aka: political, economic, geographic and social. ^w^ but not only that, I have a dream to move there and work as a manga artist, everyone says my anime is good enough but I want to keep practicing so my sister doesn't fear me turning into a poor person that lives on the streets and starves because no one buys me books. So, I want to become the best! XD and I want to be able to talk to others in japan, I mean think about it. How am I suppose to communicate with them if I don't know their language and they don't know mine?
O.O I typed alot XD

I started learning because the language was rather easy, I think. I picked up a few sentences and words from anime--I was in love with anime back then. Now, though, I just learn the language because of educational and entertainment purposes--I love the language, and I love the culture. I believe I might fit in. X3

well, like most in America, I got my fascination with japan started by falling in love with Anime when I was 11.

I haven't watched an Anime in years lately though, because JDramas and pop culture have taken over.

I started taking formal classes in my university about a year ago, and I love it!

Now, I want to go to Japan and teach English once I graduate. Even though most people who do this don't know much (if any Japanese) I feel like I can make a better connection with my students if I can speak Japanese.

Plus, I'm engaged to a wonderful man who is Japanese. I need to learn Japanese if I want to live there with him. We communicate with what broken Japanese I have and what broken English he has. It's difficult but we're both working on each other's language :3

There is this unknown scent coming from the opposite one.
Although I can breathe normally, I seem to crumble eventually.
If you could love me deeper than just those words

Well, I want to learn Japanese because I plan on taking a trip to Tokyo sometime next year with my two friends, plus, I want to better understand some songs I listen to.

Plus I love learning about other cultures, broaden your horizons and such xD

I could believe only you standing before me.
In the suddenly showing past, the times we would touch,
Could not fill the fragile emptiness, floating on those tears.

I chose to learn Japanese because I've always loved anime, manga, Japanese music and the Japanese culture, I decided to recently start studying it and I'm planning to study it in a Japanese language school this year and possibly study abroad when I go to uni

well Anime was one thing, but even before I became an anime/manga addict I had enjoyed japanese history/culture etc. I am majoring in Asian Studies with Japan as my focus. I intend to spend a year of my studies in Japan and possible stay there a while. Been thinking of government work involving Japan. smile
