One of the worst experiences was a contest held by two other [ very talented ] artists.
The contest didn't fill up with the amount of entries that they had hoped or expected, but when the contest was created,
they didn't set a gold like "If we don't reach 50, the min prize won't be given out"
Regardless, as the contest ended, the award ceremony was said to be set sometime 'soon'.
Soon turned into a few months and everyone involved started getting irritated.
One of the artists had gone on hiatus, the other had just abandoned the contest.
Claiming they could do nothing without the other, despite the fact that the contest and prized were divided into to so each could judge on their own.
To this day, it's still sitting in limbo - after a year, at that time I was a little to optimistic to report anyone involved, though that's changed.
And none of the people that entered will do business any longer with either of the artists.

Another was someone who commissioned me for a valentines picture even before that.
I sent her the picture the day of, with my signature on it, since at that time i didn't know much about watermarking and she had buttered me up.
She canceled the trade and abandonment the account...
after posting said art on her profile.

Well, I've had plenty of times where I work really hard on art and chat with someone while I'm making it, then when I give them the art they completely drop out of conversation with me. It just annoys me that people can't take the time to make one post saying "thank you" or "it looks good, thanks."

But one time I had a guy who commissioned me and then turned out to be pretty crazy. I had already done the sketch for his art but at the time the only computer I had was a very old laptop that suddenly stopped working. So I told him that because of my computer problems it would take me a little longer to do the art. I said that I was going to do the art on my friend's computer but I wouldn't have access to it all the time so it would just take me a little longer to get it finished. I thought I was being nice by keeping him up to date but he just freaked out on me. He said I was irresponsible for not taking better care of my computer and that I should buy a new computer to do his art on. Then I tried to nicely explain to him how old my computer was (it was a 6 year old laptop bought back in like 2002 so I was surprised it had lasted that long) and tell him that I didn't have the money to just go out and buy a new computer. But he just got even angrier calling me lazy and saying that I should do that art for free because of all the hassle I put him through. So I just told him that I was canceling the commission because I couldn't work with him and ignored the rest of the angry pm's he sent me. I guess some people are just crazy like that.

My story was actually from Solia Online.. but still applies pretty well here.

I did a HUGE 3D commission for this guy who offered me an item that was selling for around 13k. (Think 130k on Gaia) It took me a couple months to complete it, and I realized, 'Oh holy crap he never actually sent me a trade.' So I sent it to him with a HUGE watermark.

He told me, 'Oh I don't have that item anymore, and besides my art is free because you didn't get it to me in the time you said you would.'

I told him I had never given him a specific date, just that it would take me 'a while.'

He agreed to pay for the art.. but would no longer give me that item because he didn't have it.. oh, and it had shot up to 30k. (Think 300k on Gaia). Then I saw him TRYING TO SELL the same item in the exchange that he 'didn't have.'

I contacted a mod.. they took the item off his account.. sent it to me.. and banned him. >.>;

phhh good for you !!!!! Its sad how many sneaky people out there try stuff like that. At least you got paid somewhat. I know people who were commissioned to do 3D work and never received a cent in return : (

The only bad experience I've had was this fellow who found my facebook and started to stalk me on there, asking me when I was going to be finished ect.
Unpleasant. That's what I get for using my real name.

yea thats a tricky one : ( I always want to sign my art with my real name as well... but I never imagend people would stalk you in real life if you did... that sounds terrible : ( hope you managed to get ride of him

It wasn't too bad. I mean, I never added him to my friend list so he couldn't really do anything other than send me messages. ;-D

I hesitated using my real name for a while, due to my drug related topics. I now figure that it's no big deal, I can always deny deny deny.

I feel really bad cause most of the time I am the horror story since I take so long on each commission I do. Plus last year's been hard RL-wise, but I still feel bad for all those commissionees waiting patiently for me to finish my end. ; u;. I'm sorry world ; A; Xdddd

Cherry Ito: That sucks, I mean at least got something eventually but its unfortunate that you worked so hard for so long and then he tried to scam you.

@evil: yea thats true, denial works rofl

@kiteyu : Ahhh don't feel bad about that, I do that all the time as well XD I'm curently in a commission right now and haven't even started. Its been two weeks already and I haven't even started thinking about the concept of the pic yet : P I've gone as far as making customers wait 7-8 month which I felt really bad about... but still... as long they actually get the art piece eventually, they usually are patient... accept every now and then you get a few odd balls XD

Orz my worst is 1 1/2 years. Most of my commissions I think are at least 2-6 months. (half of it cause I'm slow and school is hectic.) And then sometimes I have to cancel the commissions. I feel bad, especailly since they're usually so nice about it but ultimately I tell myself it's gaia gold. Now that I'm out of my dad's house and am 18 I find I'm getting things done a little later. I PROMISE TO FINISH ALL COMMISSIONS FROM NOW ON!!!!.....as soon as I get my laptop back and stop adding to the nightmares for the commissionees.

thats a really good idea : D you should make it a new year resolution or something !!! haha... maybe when you accept commissions you should accept them only one at a time, have an art auction or something like that to accept only one piece, that way even if they wait 2 months before your done, theres no one waiting after them who might have to waif 4 months or more.

I'm kinda like you, slow at doing art work... I have no excuses though, I'm just lazy and to easoly motivated to do other things instead XD haha

Ah but good art takes time and I have a thing about turning in crap. I just can't.

Yeah that's what I was planning to do once I finish all of these ones off. The problem is I usually need at least three to switch off of cause I get bored in the middle. ;-;

.....
AHAHAHAHAHA rofl

I find it funny how were so much a like : ) haha... I get bored half way threw as well. It usually goes really well up until I'm done base colouring my art... once I hit shading, or even details I'm already to bored to continue with it and wanna work on something new XD

I hate handing in crap though, I just can't bring myself to give someone something I don't like... so sometimes when I'm not satisfied with the art I don't hand it in until I'm content... which eats up more hours/days of work as well >.<
