You study the basics by yourself. By basics I mean hiragana , katakana , basic grammar and as much vocab as you can. When you get that stuff down , make sure you have Japanese typing installed on ur pc and download skype. Then find bored japanese ppl who want to learn english and ask them to let you practise ur Japanese occasionally in exchange for helping them with English. make friends that way.
The most important to learn if ur going to Japan>> Basic grammar , vocab, AT LEAST hiragana and work on pronunciation as much as you can.
Spoken language first (only) >> not recommended but then just learn grammar and vocab i guess. Its important to get grammar down WELL when you start cause at first it will be hard to grasp as Japanese works so totally different from what vur used to , but the same principles and way of thinking keep coming back in different ways the farther you get , so make sure you got the basics down from the start.
Standard written language >> a mix of hiragana katakana and kanji. Sorry but you really need all three , theyre not seperate languages , theyre just elements of the language.
How long does it take >> Years, especially if ur on ur own. One of my teachers at school studied japanese for 4 years in holland , then 1 year in Japan , passed JLPT 1q and still speaks in a very awkward way.. Its all about how you do it , practicing actual speaking is the key imho.
Finally , if ur serious you can get very far. Youre only 13 which is a great advantage , I wish I started that young. But be aware that itll take time and work ...
