I can totally understand that, and actually respect your reasoning to some degree. I don't see how viewing with intent to buy damages the industry at all and, if it does, someday I'll probably find out how.

Then again, you can't put yourself above people who steal everything they watch/read because, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, you're a law-breaker the same as them. Also, despite supporting the artists and companies you like, you're crippling the ones you don't like.

I can't exempt myself from the illegality of downloading just because I buy an awful lot of material. I know it's not equally comparable, but only killing one person still makes you a murderer (Sorry to use such crude reasoning, but it highlights my point exacltly.) Downloading (depending on the material) still makes you a thief.

Anyway, I think we've exhausted this debate pretty well. Perhaps we should discuss bootleg DVDs to thrown a spanner at those who DO buy everything they watch? XP

Bootleggers are the worst kind of people. I'll just say that.

So true, because they actually make money out of distributing licenced material. At least fansubbers and fanlators (as illegal as what some of them do is) distribute anime/manga for free and for the enjoyment of others. Bootleggers are simply despicable.

What's worse is the fact that most of these traders advertise their products as the real McCoy, tricking honest fans into purchasing illegal goods. I'm very carefull to do my research when I shop online, but a lot of these items pop up on eBay all the time.

You may think it's a shame to waste money on a single volume you don't like, but it's devastating for fans who shell out a lot of money for low-quality, illegal boxsets they believed to be genuine.

Another reason why I won't buy online. I feel bad for the fans who lost good money on crap.

I have another question for you to chew on, before I completely close our little debate.

What if, say, a series was licensed, but it hasn't been released yet? Say the series was delayed for some reason, and won't be out for a couple months, but you're REALLY in the mood to check it out.

What then?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 06, 2008 7:08 pm

To be honest, by the time something is licenced in America, it's likely I can already purchase it from Japan. I don't have to obey US copyright licenses, so the law really doesn't apply to me in terms of what people can do in your country. However, waiting a couple of months to buy something means nothing to me. I'm not an impatient little child and I acknowlege the fact that I have no right to view what I want when I want. So, no matter how eagar I am to watch something, I can wait until it becomes available to me.

On that note, I think it's best if we bury this debate.

Watching anime online isnt affecting the producers. Sure, some of the small companies are going out of business, but thats because they werent signing any good anime on. The huge industries will always b there.

Do you honestly believe that? Do you think anime/manga companies would survive if everybody stole their products? Also, it's cruel to make the assumption that smaller companes produce worse material. Even the big companies started out small, didn't they? Besides that, there are plenty of doujin artists who produce better work that the reaaally big companies. Most of the big companies got lazy when they became "big", because they don't have to put as much effort into their material for people to buy it. Therefore, you tend to find the smaller companies actually produce better work, because they work harder to impress potential buyers.

Oh, so series that don't have fandoms that are bursting the seams of the AMC aren't "good" then, are they?

Geneon did not go down the drain because they didn't liscense "good" anime. "Good" anime is a matter of opinion.

And I beg that you do your research before you make another post like this. Or else I may have to start lecturing.

ADV is a huge industry, but haven't you heard? Even it's suffering because no one's buying things / things aren't being bought as much as before. What justifies this one, hmmm?

Baha, not really. If you'd say something to my face, I'd be too shy to say anything, I might mutter a few words meekly and get really embarrassed. >>;

Same here! The thing that gets to me most is the fact that they can't admit to doing anything wrong! Urrrgh (x___X) I wouldn't condone it if they did, but it would make me less frustrated. I mean, who are the trying to kid? Themselves, perhaps?

Hahaha XD

Too true. People wanna pretend they're more perfect than they really are. My brother and his friends do it (one of his friends even steals products from cons!!) but they do it with a little grace by owning up to their crimes (can one steal gracefully? XDD)... still, wrong is wrong, but it's puzzling how stupid a person must be the genuinely believe they're not doing anything wrong. It makes more sense that we're being lied to...but you never know with otaku (o__O!!)

I don't think it's any worse than stealing anime online. Still, it is totally bad! Obviously his excuse is that con products are overpriced but, of course, that's why we have Internet shopping :3
