I think us anime/manga fans are conditioned from a young age. I mean, look at Sailor Moon; my friend and I watched it when we were tiny, but her mother looked down on it as porn. In fact, a lot of misinformed people still misperceive anime and manga as hentai. I guess the high levels of fanservice don't help XDD

However, my parents actually funded both my sisters and myself for Sailor Moon stuff.

And that whole people thinking anything anime and manga related is hentai is true. D:
People who aren't of the Anime persuasion anyway.
Although it doesn't help, i love my fanservice. ;_;

I don't actually mind lack of fanservice, because my passion for shōjo is also very strong. As much as the fanservice in Negima! adds to the comedy, I think I'd enjoy it just as much without.
Gotta admire parents who break bounderies. I remember my parents bought me a book on how to draw manga for my eleventh or twelfth birthday; it's full of fanservice, underwear and even illustrates different boob shapes (^^;; ) Around that time, my dad also gave me a VHS of a really nasty 18+ anime replete with infamously nasty gore and sex. I wish I could find that tape now...or at least remember the name of the anime :3

I can buy that sorta stuff legally now, but I think exposure at such a young age made me lose interest XD Doujin are interesting, even though I'd never like to own one...or even read one, for that matter ^^;; Hahaha

I love the Negima manga (it's one of my favorites actually,) but the anime isn't a favorite of mine. It's alright.
As for the current conversation you are having, gore is alright in anime. Like Blood+, Trinity Blood and whatnot. That's neat stuff. But I don't really have a spot for things like yaoi, yuri, or hentai. I tried to read it once, but the only kind of reading of it I can do is fanfiction for some reason, and that I can't even do anymore really @_@

My gore tolerance has increased since I saw a middnight viewing of Tokyo Gore Police a couple of nights ago (o___O; )
Still, I'm not into gore or violence. There are certain series that make an exception, but as a rule I don't go for incredibly bloody anime/manga. I'm too imaginitive and sensitive to handle something so nasty.

Ooh, I have some Negima! related news for anybody who's interested. I ordered the Negipa! Party Book from Japan for my little brother. It hasn't arrived yet, but people who read the manga may have noticed Akamatsu mentions Negipa! in his notes. I've seen previews of later volumes on eBay auctions but I've never actually owned one. Even though I bought it as a gift, I can't wait to read it myself. Hehe. For anybody else who's interested in Negipa! you can find reasonably priced copies on eBay.
