You can get your Friend Code from your PalPad. I was going to make a video showing just how to do that, but I got done and it looked and sounded like s**t, so I'll just give you instructions instead...

exclaim You'll need a wireless access point that will support your DS for this. The easiest is to use your families wireless network, if you have one (a wireless network, I mean, not a family...). An understanding friend with a wireless network may also work. Otherwise some places have wireless internet access you can use, but it may take some hunting to find one that your DS can connect to.
exclaim You will need the PalPad item in-game and at least one badge.

Setting up a Wireless Connection

1. When you start up your game, select "NINTENDO WFC SETTINGS" from the menu.
   
2. Then select "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings".
   
3. You have space for settings for three connections. Ideally, at least one is empty, select it.
   
   • If you don't have an empty slot and are not using one of the connections that are already set up, you'll need to erase the settings of one of them. I suggest the one you use the least often...
   
   
4. Now you have three options. For ease of explanation, choose "Search for an Access Point".
   
5. It'll bring up a list of wireless networks in range of your DS. Choose the one that you intend to use and press "OK" [(A)].
   
6. It'll save the settings for that connection and run a quick test to make sure that it can actually connect.
   
7. You should now be back to the original Wi-Fi screen. Just click on "Back" [(B)] to go back to the game.

Using the PalPad and WFC (Wi-Fi Club)

1. Go to the basement of any Pokémon Center
   
2. Speak with one of the ladies to the left of the partition. They'll help you connect to the WFC. The first time you connect, a Friend Code is assigned to you.
   
3. You can disconnect right away and then open your pack.
   
4. Go to the "Key Items" pocket.
   
5. Use the PalPad item.
   
6. Select the option that is your player name, it's the third button from the top.
   
7. This displays your Friend Code, jot it down and share it with others.

[edit]If anybody notices anything in here that is misleading, unclear, or just plain wrong, let me know. It's been quite some time since I set up my friend code and I had a hard time remembering just how it's done...
