Shaftin nodded a little, considering Donato’s reply for a moment as if deciding if the younger hare was telling the truth. He sounded sincere enough, and Shaftin couldn’t really find any reason why Donato would try to lie to him. Eula, maybe. But probably not Donato.
“Eula told me about that village idea. Does it sound to you as if it’s really going to be put into the works?” Eula had been very vague on the details, not explaining how or when the village would be built.

Donato tipped his head to the side thoughtfully. "I don't know. Faith sure sounded serious, but it's going to be a lot of work. A lot of beasts weren't too thrilled with the idea. It's going to take years - I don't even think we have an idea of when we'd be starting work if we do it."

Shaftin nodded vaguely. He was listening and paying attention to Donato, but it was obvious he wasn't too terrible interested in the current topic, even though he had initiated the conversation. He lifted a paw and ran it through his headfur, letting out a slow breath. He could pretend forever, act like he wasn't worried as long as he wanted, but it was impossible for him to deny to himself how concerned he was with how things were playing out.
Part of him wanted to protect Eula from this, from everything, from the dangerous world. But he had sworn he would never be overbearing on his children. That was why Eula was back at Redwall, that was why he was allowing her to stay despite impending danger. Sure, Eula had grown up faster than he would've liked, and he had all but missed her transition into adulthood. That probably played a large part in his feelings that he should be protecting her.
Shaftin looked very tired all of a sudden. He lifted his cup and took a lingering drink. When he set his cup back down, the look had gone from his face as quickly as it had appeared.
So," he began in the least awkward tone he could muster. "Two and a half years, eh?" By the decided tone and the look he gave Donato, Shaftin was clearly on the topic he'd been wanting to talk about. "This is probably a ridiculous question, having seen you two together... but how's it going?"

Donato looked at Shaftin with a cocked eyebrow over the remains of his breakfast. He hadn't missed the older hare's concern or sudden tiredness, but he let it go when Shaftin changed the subject.
At the new topic, Donato laughed. "Well," he replied with a smile. "Or, as well as things can be expected between Eula and me." He didn't think their mutual teasing and sarcasm would ever stop - which was fine by him. "I mean, we fight once in a while, but we're doing really great."

Shaftin nodded a little at Donato's somewhat vague reply. He paused for a few moments, wondering where to go with the conversation from there. It seemed rather rude to ask Donato what he and Eula argued about... but Donato had put it out there.
"Fights over what?" he asked in a mild tone, deciding if Donato didn't want to talk about it, or if there wasn't anything to say on the matter, he probably wouldn't.

[Just a little excerpt with my characters]
“Hey sweetheart, how are you feeling?” Turan asked as he came in to his family’s dormitory to strap on his scabbard for some training with Antoine in a few minutes.
“G’way,” came the miserable reply from the lump underneath the covers in bed.
Turan cleared his throat lightly, eyes shifting between the door and the bed. “Well, I was just wondering because it’s your turn to watch Tracy while I-”
The covers moved as a pair of green, amber-flecked eyes peeked out from under the blanket. Tannia glowered out at Turan, as if daring him to finish his sentence.
“-But of course I’ll take her for the afternoon and give you some time to rest!” he said in a hurried voice. He walked over to the corner of the room and scooped up the bunny who was doodling on some spare parchment. “Let’s go outside and let mommy sleep, okay?”
Tracy nodded and waved at Tannia, who offered a smile. “Bye sweetie, be good.”
Turan shifted Tracy onto his right hip, looking back at Tannia. “Maybe you should go see Jasmine?”
“When I die, then I’ll go see Jasmine,” Tannia replied, tugging the blanket back over her head, ending the discussion.
Turan paused a moment, then reached over and tugged the shade over the window closed with his free paw. "All right, feel better," he said softly before leaving, clicking the door shut quietly behind them.

((And an excuse for me to jump in ^^))
::There was a sound of paws rushing to meet him, and it only took a few moments for Antoine to arrive... although slightly unlike him, usually the stickler who was standing still in place for Turan right as he came out, and he quickly made a small bow to Tracy too before looking to Turan::
Excuse'... ::He apologised, quickly regaining breath:: ...My mother needed me to being of help...
::There was however, an extra creature of their number nearby, it didn't take much more of a look, than to see Kusaa standing on a tree branch, perched and perfectly still, a bag of items hanging from the tree beneath her, eyes closed, but judging the fact she wasn't hanging upside down, it was safe assumed she WASN'T asleep... unless that was just her as an exception...::
::But just standing, waiting it seemed for whatever reason, as cockel shell ears perked and flicked lightly for but a second each, and nothing more, if waiting she was, it wasn't for them::

Turan didn’t seem in the least upset with Antoine, only nodded genially when the young skunk appeared. Turan wondered if he ever gave the skunk a reason to believe that he’d be unduly upset if he was late every now and then. He understood there were things called priorities, and training should not be Antoine’s right now.
Tracy waved cheerfully at Antoine.
“Don’t worry about it, you have other responsibilities now. You have a new sister and your mother is going to need a lot of help. I understand. I’m actually running a little late myself because Tannia isn’t feeling well today.”
He shifted his attention to Tracy momentarily. “I’m going to be busy for a little bit. Can you go find some others to play with for awhile until I’m done?”
Tracy smiled and nodded as Turan set her down. ‘Orchard?’ she signed.
Turan nodded in reply. “If no one’s there, head inside.”
Tracy nodded, then waved and headed off leisurely toward the orchard.
Turan lifted an arm to beckon Antoine out to the grounds. “Shall we then?”
~~~~~~~~~~~
There were some others on the grounds enjoying the clear morning.
“Ha, I won! I beat you AGAIN!” shouted a young, excited creature. Payton was doing a little victory dance about the grounds, highly pleased with himself.
Eula was leaned up against the wall, palms flat against the wall as she worked to regain her breath. “Oh, no way. That was a tie. There’s no WAY to decide who won that!”
“You look awfully tired.”
“Shut up. It was a tie.”
“Fine!” Payton threw his paws up, giving in. “But if that was a tie, then as soon as I’m taller than you, you’ll eat my DUST!”
Eula shook her head, with nothing really to say.
Payton continued his victory dance, skipping about the area. “I’m the fastest hare at Salamandastroooon,” he said in a sing-song voice, carrying on like... well, an eleven year old.
Eula, with her breathing under control, looked over at Payton. “You have to be thirteen to be Frontrunner, right?”
Payton stopped dancing to nod and grin in reply. “Yup! And I will be.”
((Speaking of, Chris shot up and is suddenly several inches taller than I am. That jerk.))
"You know, just random stupid things, usually. It's mostly when something else is going on that has us on edge. I ended up picking a fight with her over I don't even remember what a couple winters ago when a village a little ways off got attacked by vermin. Mostly, though, we get along alright. Since I started watching the Dibbuns, though, I haven't had as much time to see her lately."
(First: Score for tying in references to past events Jasmine created way back on page 26. Also, score for inventing something in the Eula/Donato timeline. Yay.
Second: Total lie. Donato spends no time taking care of the Dibbuns except in the form of, "Donato had spent the whole day chasing Dibbuns, and was now going to the pond to find Eula.")
::Antoine watched Tracy heading off, giving her a little wave as well before looking to Turan, and nodding briskly, falling into place just a few paces behind him:: What will today we be exercising, sir?
::His eye cast back in the direction of Kusaa for a last glance, but at this point however, the bat was no longer there, nor her mysterious bag::
~~~~~~~~
I assume to be a successful frontrunner, you also have to be an accomplished warrior. ::Kusaa finally announced herself, flapping down, her bag held between the claws of her feet, when she landed, and still stood upon it, folding her wings closer::
I hope you haven't worn yourself out for that duel today? ::She half-smiled, which for her, seemed the most you'd get out of the bat on a good day, as her eyes scanned over the area... looking for the large sword she'd left in his care, wherever it may be now...::

Shaftin lifted an eyebrow, shaking his head with a little smile. “Well, if the only problem you can come up with is a fight from a couple years ago, I’d say you are doing pretty well.”
He lifted his cup, taking another drink as he looked Donato over for a moment. He set his cup down. “Admittedly, I’m surprised you two are together, because...” he hesitated on the rest of his sentence, obviously stuck for the right words. “Well, you two are very different.” ~~~~~~~~~~
Turan looked at Antoine for a few minutes, considering. “Well, I’ve been thinking of doing this for the past few weeks... but I haven’t asked your mother’s permission.” He paused again, then decided - hoped - Rosa would trust his judgment.
He beckoned the young skunk to walk alongside, rather than behind in such an inferior fashion. “Come along and walk with me to the gatehouse.”
~~~~~~~~~~~
“I am!” Payton said in a confident voice, before he even knew who had spoken. He spun around, grey eyes landing on Kusaa. “Oh. Hello,” he attempted a little more politely.
“Nah, just a little running doesn’t tire me out,” he grinned, shooting a look at Eula.
“I could still floor you before you could blink,” Eula replied, swatting at her brother’s ear.
He looked at Kusaa, noticing the bat looking around. “The sword’s back in the room where me and my dad stayed. I practiced a lot yesterday. I just don’t have it now ‘cause I wanted to come out and run...” his voice got a little quieter as he spoke, as if he thought he did something wrong even as he explained where the sword was.
“I can go get it and be back in a tick!”
::A few steps he made, a slight beam of pride to be allowed to stand aside the warrior as he nodded, only waiting to be told what it was he would be doing, or to see it for himself as he followed:: Yessir.
~~~~~~~~
::Kusaa nodded, and only smirked, letting him go:: I half expect to open my eyes and you'll be back already with the sword after that display...
::She opened her eyes again, and deftly ripped into the back with the claws on her feet, as the bag burst away, and blades by the dozen fell out of all shapes and sizes!! Rapiers, broadswords, daggers long and short... all of them seemed fairly ornate, and all of them new, without as much as any wear to their blades, nor any other signs of use::
::It hardly came to guess where all these suddenly new swords materialised, as Kusaa pulled the bag away, standing and leaving the pile before her... she'd have to wait for Payton for the next part!::

Donato grinned, leaning his elbows against the table now. He had thought about that very point plenty of times both before and since he and Eula had gotten together. Shaking his head, he answered. "I know, believe me. I think it works for us, though, that we're so different. We sort of balance each other. I mean, she can be responsible when I'm not, and I'll be reasonable when she's getting excited over something." Um. Maybe that wasn't the best thing to say about a daughter to her father.

Shaftin didn’t seem upset by Donato’s explanation. After all, he knew his daughter well enough to know how spastic she could be at times. “I guess that makes sense,” he replied, as he made some headway on his breakfast. “How long have you lived here?”
~~~~~~~~~~
Turan halfway expected the young skunk to insist on walking behind, so he was somewhat surprised when Antoine came up beside him. He nodded, pleased. Turan led Antoine across the grounds and into the gatehouse. “Hold on a moment,” he said quickly, walking over to a small storage closet in the corner.
Opening the unlocked door, he stepped in. There was no rummaging around necessary. He just reached over to the wall of the closet and lifted something off a set of pegs. Having left one footpaw back to keep the door open, he now backed back out of the doorway, a long scabbard in his paws.
He wasn’t entirely sure what Antoine’s reception to it would be, but Turan wanted to quickly dispel any over-excitement as he used his elbow to shut the door behind him. He took the hilt in his right paw and drew out a plain, yet sturdy sword from the scabbard. He looked over it at the skunk. “Now, it isn’t a full-sized sword,” he explained before Antoine could ask. “But it is strong and you’ll have to be very careful with it. You aren’t to use this or any other real blade without proper supervision. Understood?” he asked, waiting for a reply before he would hand over the sword.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Eula rolled her eyes at Kusaa’s comment as Payton darted off. “Oh he isn’t that fast,” she said with a shake of her head. She looked over her shoulder, seeing that her younger brother was already nowhere to be found.
When she returned her attention to the bat, there were suddenly all manner of weapons before her. Eula didn’t say anything for a few moments, her eyes casting appreciatively over every blade. She finally blinked a few times in confusion and looked up at Kusaa. “Where did all these come from?”

::There wasn't a single request or command yet Antoine wouldn't disobey, and he stood in place, waiting obediently, but when that sword came out, you could see his eyes drawn to it, a sudden sharp breath cut in half as he watched transfixed over the blade's length, it didn't matter to him how plain it could be, a blade meant something a lot more to him than it might have been understood, and he looked, from the blade to the beast holding it, and let out his breath as he took each and every word to heart, standing as firm to attention as possible::
Will my mother or fathering count, sir?
~~~~~~
::Kusaa looked down below her, throwing away the remnants of the bag she'd carried previously, and began a precarious walk over the blades that had embedded themselves in the ground, walking delicately from hilt to hilt:: They are all of my design, as the blade for the badger lord is too.
Payton will need to use them to make a choice before the duel.
