Well things were going just swimmingly. They got the rope up, prepared a method of securing it, and had a few good suggestions if it didn't work. All was well in the world. Which is probably precisely why as soon as they went on to enact these plans, the doors suddenly closed up above her head, leaving her and the orc with a sun rod and a group of dead adventurers. Waste of a perfectly good rope. This trap was THE worst. Swinging axes and poison darts would have been better than this... stinking (literally)... hole. She had to hit her head on the wall at least once before recovering and following the Eladrin's instructions to the other side of the pit. Assuming he could pull the rope, which seemed rather unlikely. On her way she also stopped by and picked up a rope from one of the kits Thork had found to replace the damaged one.

"Take your time. I'm sure these lost souls appreciate the company."

Thork set the SAKs aside, thinking he might be able to make a super bag later to carry everything, and dragged the bodies to a side. "Mercy, know them?"

Ambra is smart, and Stupid elf is brave, Thork had no worry about if they would leave... But, when. Having a clear path to the handleless door, after Mercy gives her response, Thork backs as far as he could and "Heeeyyyaaaa" screams, As he charges the door.

Breaking down a door is more of a Strength check rather than attacking it. Regardless, Thork smashes into it, and handily... bounces off of it. If it had been closely examined before and after the fact, the door was not unscathed, but was dented slightly... among numerous other such impacts.

It was entirely likely Thork wasn't the first one to think of this strategy.

Thork, you get the sense that your body will give before the door does. A legendary, heroic adventurer might have the wherewithal to show the door what-for, but you aren't at that level yet.

You can continue to try, but it will be some time before such efforts get you through that door.

Mercy, if you examine the bodies, you can make the same insight check Thork was entitled to.

Ambra, Aelgeirr, you hear a loud KA-WHUMP! as something meaty smashes into something metallic down below your feet.

Figuring he was lowering another rope down their anyway, Aelgeirr picks up his discarded hatchet and chops off the weakened rope. *CLUNK* "What was that down there?"

"I'm going to inspect the trap door and see what lies below. Perhaps this could be easier then we are making it out to be." Ambra walks over to trapdoor and inspects it to see if it was trapped and whether she could tie the rope to the handle.

It was a bit morbid for her tastes, and rather unlikely an outsider like herself would recognize a group of random adventurers, but... well if she could help give closure to their families it was worth a try. At the very least it helped to make a mental note, to come back after the Orb business was over to gives these lost souls their last rites and respects. Sehanine may have been a goddess of the living, but every priest could honor the dead.

"Ahm. Well let's see."

@ Mercy:

You don't recognize these people either. All seems relatively normal at first. But...

The fighter didn't seem to have a weapon, and she didn't look like she fought unarmed.

You can't tell the cleric's faith, his holy symbol is gone.

The rogue didn't seem to any armor, he was barely clothed at all.

The wizard had mark around his neck, like he had something pull against it.

--------------------

@ Ambra, and to a lesser extent, Aelgeirr:

Ambra finishes the search Aelgeirr started. The goblins had nothing of particular note or value on them, Ambra paid closer attention to the hatch. It didn't seem particularly sealed or locked. Maybe just solid, at best. The rope could be tied to the handle, and it was bound to be a better option for securing it.

She finds no traps.

Since you said "And see what lies below", does that mean you are opening it?

Aelgeirr stops Ambra from seeing "and below" just yet. "Wait a few and we'll have Thork and Mercy with us before we do anything more."

He'd then secure a rope to the handle and then flip the switch that triggered the trap. The Eladrin would then toss the rope down "Don't know how much time you have, so you should hurry."

I was waiting on seeing if anyone else had any other ideas, but...

When Aelgeirr throws the lever, the portcullis begins to lower. It takes a few seconds to do so, of course.

Mercy, Thork, you think you might hear distant, subtle clinking noises. Not like the sound a portcullis might possibly very well make if it was being raised or lowered.

Aelgeirr then throws some rope down the hallway.

Aelgeirr would grunt as the portcullis descended and his rope hit the floor. He would then try to keep the portcullis up while asking "Ambra, mind pulling that lever once again, please?"

"Mm-mm. Nobody I recognize. All I can tell is they've already been stripped of valuables. Not terribly surprising." she answered solemnly. Before startling a moment later as the orc shouted and rammed the door.

"H-heywait, we're all still hurt and fatigued. Perhaps we shouldn't draw extra attention to ourselves just yet." and to the people above she called up. "You know, just a thought, perhaps you two could go through that hatch and open this door from the other side? Judging by these bodies its clearly capable of being opened."

Ambria, now trapped behind the portcullis, scratches her head. "What good would it do now? The rope is secured from this side. With the portcullis down there will be no edge left for them to crawl up on when the trapdoors opens. The trap will then just reset itself and we will be in the same position. Can I please just take a peek through the trap door? Based on the layout I have a feeling the door to their chamber lies just below. If there were any goblins down there would already be well aware of what has transpired by the noises we have made. that fight wasn't exactly stealthy."

As the portcullis fell, so did Aelgeirr's resistance. There wasn't much time left, but dammit...What could they trust in here? Heh.There was only one way to do this. "Fine. Let's do it. Get ready." After that, Aelgeirr would yank the trap door open and grab his spear and pass through.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 27, 2016 8:21 pm
Aelgeirr yanked open the hatch in the floor without any further hesitation!

There was a ladder leading down. From their vantage point, they could see, at the base of the ladder, facing east, was a barred steel door, open-able from this side.

The hall continues north. Aelgeirr and Ambra hear no sounds of goblins scurrying to battle. Or doing anything else. It was quiet as a tomb.

Since Aelgeirr stated he 'passed through', upon descending the ladder, he sees no goblins either. The hall is 10' wide, and 50' long. It is very poorly lit with sconces, so it was dim lighting all the way down. Luckily, half the party had low-light vision so they were fine. That half was the A-Team.

The hall was crudely carved through the earth, without as much razzle dazzle as the semi-nicely-constructed hallway above had. It seemed secure enough, though. The rough stone floor was uneven, though traversable enough without it being difficult to do so. The walls were a combination of tightly-packed earth and crudely-hewn stone.

There were four other doorways in this hallway. Two halfway down on each side, which looked like your standard basic wooden doors. The one at the end on the east side was the same; the one across from it were a sturdier set of double doors, but otherwise didn't look particularly special beyond that.

NOTE: It's been about 2 minutes after the previous battle has ended. No short rest has been completed yet. Just a friendly reminder.

Aelgeirr would inspect the barred steel door for signs of a huge half orc running into it or the like. Regardless, it could only be this door that lead to the trap, so he opened it......with a spear at the ready, of course.
