The boy looks up at his, his sapphire colored eyes rimmed in red. Glumly he nods and closes the book he has been trying to read with a heavy sigh. "Reading had sounded like fun, but it has turned into a hellish task that he is certain he'll never unravel.

It's okay, Passura...I had forgotten what it was like to learn how to read...I'm old, Passura...very old....older than most creatures can even think of...

The boy nods numbly. Right now he was so mentally tired, the thought of anyone being that old doesn't register. He's heard him, but it just doesn't click... yet.

The boy curls up with a nod and prepares himself to be bored out of his wits, thoroughly convinced that reading was just that, boring and dumb.

*Kero's book is a classic one designed to get children up...and with his voice, and his talent at imitation, the stories inside it come to life...Grimm's fairy tales are good for that...*

Passura begins to listen with interest and when he finishes the one, he asks him to read another and then another, finally falling asleep in the middle of the third. It is mid-afternoon, and the heat of the mid-day has seeped down into the cavern, warming it considerably. It is still cool but only just so. Kero closes the book and goes outside to check the weather.
"Storm coming..." says Bez as he exits the cave. He is going about the clearing securing anything loose.

*Kero nods, helping him out, then moves back into his cave, working on a project in his room, then leaving it on the table when the storm hits...nothing serious, just a small amulet sitting on the kitchen table, and Passura is asleep...so he darts out to makes sure everything is battened down and tied down...managing to save the firewood he had gathered...takes a bit of magic, but the tarp will stick now*

When he returns Passura is sitting at the table, He hasn't touched the amulet, but he is looking at it out of curiosity. Then just as Kero enters the room he reaches out to touch it.

There is little time for regret. Kero knows he should not have left the piece sitting out as he had, with no indication that it should not be disturbed. Time moves so slowly. In his mind he sees Passura's hand moving far faster than he can stop him and yet it feels as though he is moving through molasses to get to him. They connect just as the boys hand comes down on the amulet.

*Kero's magic manages to save them, but the amulet explodes in a soundless thwap, flinging both of them to their feet...rays of light lance outward, spearing through leaves...Kero rolls over Passura, protecting him with his cloak and his body...the assault lasts for about five minutes, then it is over*

"Mes'sirrah... I can't breath..." the boy says in a very nervous voice after a bit once everything has died down.
Voices from outside the cave call into them. "Is everything ok in there."

Yeah...we're fine...Amulet failed, that's all!
*Looks at Pas, flicking his mind out to him in a private conversation*
We'll talk about it when they're gone...yes, I just skirted the truth...I don't want them worrying about us...they've got enough problems, okay?

Tam and Bez walk in and eye them both worriedly. "Ma said we should go see if there was anything left of ye. She stayed behind with the kids." says Tam looking about with a frown. As nothing seems to be out of place he relaxes a bit and shakes his head. "What the hell are ye trying to teach him now, pyrotechnics?"
