Late reply, but...
Never my intention to act snooty and to "get on my high horse". Maybe to you, you might call items an obstruction, others might call it a handicap. Either way, we agree it shouldn't be used in battles of skill, correct?
The "really good players" you're talking about would prefer items off. It might come off as being a sore loser when you use items as an excuse, but it could very easily be true. You're winning, I pick up a hammer, you lose. How is that fair? I lucked out, would you say I'm better than you?
(And yes, of course I'd shake my hand after losing to someone I've never seen before. Why the hell would I disrespect the guy who's better than me? Even if I had won, I would too.)

My best friend can catch anything you hurl at him... seriously, its like playing a computer player, only way better. but yes, in general, items are frowned upon in games of skill. maybe it doesnt bother me as much because whenever we pick up a hammer, someone grabs it and stands in place... outside of that though, anything is game. my favorite thing to do is grab Bo-Bo's favorite items ( the fan, the the umbrella ) and throw them off the stage xp xp xp he does the same with me though. I can only see one use, in my opinion, for having items on.
Gus brought up a good point: Catching items.
The only reasoin to have items on (some) in a couple of matches is to practice catching items. One could easily do the same in practice mode, or be peach for a match or two. But in my opinion, that's the only reason I'd have items on.
The situation with the hammer as Sio described it is the best example anyone could give.

Items aren't the only thing you can catch. Turnips can be too. Gus287 but yes, in general, items are frowned upon in games of skill. Glad we agree. As for which item I like the best? Beam saber. Best throwing item in the game.

aha! so you do play with items biggrin the star rod is my favorite... good damage when thrown or swung, good knockback, and it shoots stars!
also, not just peach's turnips, but link's bombs too biggrin you guys must not play against a lot of link players.

Never said I didn't play with items on occasionally. Most of the time, though, we don't. Gus287 also, not just peach's turnips, but link's bombs too biggrin you guys must not play against a lot of link players. Not that, just I've never dared to try catching a bomb, so I wasn't sure. Besides, there's only one Link player out of us, and being a Fox main, I usually waveshine infinite him to death.

I was playing my friend Matt one time. The match was so close! We both had one life and I had slightly more damage than him. I would have beat him, but the only reason he one is because a star spawned right next to him. And then right after it wore off, a hammer spawned next to him. I can't wait till Brawl comes out so that I can finally get my revenge.

My closest match was when I was playing 3 lvl9 Gannondorfs against me, of course I was Link. when I was down to the last Gannondorf, I got a bomb that fell. and threw it at him, but he survied so he comes at me with a capsule, with pure luck he threw it at us, since we were standing near eachother, and it exploded exclaim But anyway, I flew upwards, and he flew to the side. So I won by a few seconds. sweatdrop sweatdrop sweatdrop
