Bleh, I see Emo and Goth exchanges. I think whatever attitude or idea behind being either was, it's abolished now, mostly just a fashion statement...or an attention grab. In my town, I can't name many who actually, you know...aren't just wearing black to wear it, give themselves reason to be talked about.

Me and my friends get called 'Goth' a lot, we don't even wear that much black. It's just because we don't play sports or go to the parties. We're different, therefore some sort of anti-social unhappy cutter types.

None of us are 'depressed' though, we're just grouped and thought be so.

I, personally, think this depression thing is a trend, few have good reason, and those who really do usually cover it up.

They want attention, I think.
I don't see many depressed teens around me, but I do see some wannabe emos on the internet.

OK. I'll take a shot at this...and yes, I am also a Teen sweatdrop

In MY OPINION, Teens can easily become depressed because they have impressionable minds.

Some might do the act to gain attention because they somehow think that it is cool.

Some actually have problems, I mean SERIOUS problems, none of that grade-school nonsense.

It might also just be Hormones, because yes, it is a proven fact that it has something to do with brain development.

It could just be school though. Teenagers nowadays can be pretty darn mean, if I do say so myself. Some, no matter how hard they may try, are just anti-social. They try to make friends, honestly, but people don't seem to like them, no matter how hard they try to get along with everyone. These people shouldn't feel bad though, as I always say: If someone doesn't like you, its not you with the problem, its them. They need to be accepted for who they are.

It can just be that some are emotional. Some are strong-willed, independent, and can handle whatever the world throws at them, and that is truly admirable and I applaud thee. Others though, need a bit of hardening, you could call it growing up. Some just can't take insults, failures, and other such things.

Another reason, coming from personal experience, may be the Parents. My Mother, shes grand. Father though, hes a completely different story. Hes too over-bearing. Too strict. He doesn't accept ****-ups, as he so generously calls them. He can never be satisfied. In 8th Grade, I got the 3rd highest score in the English EOC in the whole freaking state! Father just says Good Job... stare Whenever I do Fantastic, he acts as if its nothing, yet, when I mess up, like forget to clean after myself, or something insignificant, he blows up... talk2hand

Wow, I really got off topic here, I just felt the need to give a prime example. I meant it in no way to bring my personal issues upon you. For this, forgive me.

Now then, with my opinion stated, I'm off, and no, I am not depressed. I just have my ups and downs. 3nodding

[(.:;:.Just put your lips to the TV.:;:.)]

here's a better question, why should they be?
1Lots of parents fight
2.getting into high school and finding out you can't handle it
3.friends getting in drugs and other such things
4.high school romance
5.high school bullying((the better word to use on this level would be assholes))

Society says that teenagers are just delinquents who can't do anything, so they just fit themselves right in......simple as that

(I gotta be honest, I've only seen depressed teenagers in this country during this century or at least alot of them during this century and it looks like it's getting worse.) I mean yeah there's the whole dating and being popular issue, I also think that it's a stage. I mean your whole physical body changes, their's the whole beauty thing about being sexy, etc and kids are extremely influenced by the media. This is a time when a kid beings to mature, so you find most teens depressed because life is no longer the way it use to be, it's just when you were a child things seemed more bright and happy, but as you get older you being to realize that the world isn't that bright and happy place. I think it mainly has to do with finding your inner self. Most have extreme difficulties with it, others deny it, and there's just so many issues, it's hard to agree on one main cause.

I honestly think that the root cause of teen depression is hormone fluctuation. Things like a divorce and peer pressure can cause an overload and make the problems worse, but I think a lot of the negative feelings are already there due to hormones.

I look back a couple of years to my depression, and I really think that hormone imbalance was the main cause of my depression. My life hasn't changed much but I feel a lot happier now, and I think it's because my hormones have calmed down some.

Looking out how almost everyone has some sort of depression during their teens, it seems very likely that something as universal as hormones would be the root cause.

I think depression happens when younger people reflect on their past. When they do so, they picture things being better and sometimes being worse. With these thoughts in mind, you come to realization that things will never change the past and you know you'll have to live on with whatever you have now. That's where I think depression comes from. There's actually a lot of other things that teenagers come across that lead them into depression. Peer Pressure, Neglect, Not getting what they want out of things, Jealousy, and other things. It's all in a matter of who the person is noting that every kid has their own opinion on things. So different things, react with different people.

I agree the growing stereotypes are just trends,
that some who seem depressed are just trying to fit in with a stereotype.
It's very true that many people with real depression will hide it.
Some don't, but I suspect most do.

But then, there are those of us who get depressed for no real reason.
It is real depression, just with no tangible cause.
Like me, I know I have absolutely nothing to be depressed about,
I have a loving family, my parents aren't divorced,
I have a bunch of close friends that I would trust with my life,
I hardly ever have to study and get straight A's,
I have a boyfriend whom I love with all my heart and loves me,
I don't feel the pressures to fit in with one group,
yet sometimes I just get this deep feeling of sadness and lonliness once and a while.
No reason for it, just happens a couple times a month for a few days at a time.

But as for why others are depressed,
I'm pretty sure the most likely causes have all been listed in this topic already.

Oh ohio everyone and all other friendly guild members and the cute girls~ *blows kisses*

alright what have we got here *gets out glasses* depression in teenagers? eh? I'm a teenager..*looks around, over shoulder and then back at screen* I don't appear to be depressed.. Anyway moving onto my awnser (lol).

I figure teenagers be despressed these days due to the fact that they have less will power. They don't have that burning passion our parrents and grand-parents had and needed to make it in the world like we do today. Back in *asks mother what period she was born in* 1954. Back in that time everyone was spaced out and living on farms and or had to work their asses off because there wasn't alot of money there was vietname and or some other war and there wasn't technology. Now a-days everything is handed to us on a silver plater even if you are poor you still have alot of luxuries so you don't develop that sort of strive to do better, so you don't gain that will power, and without that will power your not as passionate about things, and when that happens you get more depressed easily..
wait what about japan?
Oh right japan..and there suicides..and.um..tall buildings..
Anyway it's diffrent in japan they have nice things but they have diffrent personalitys then north american and europien people. They have the passion and strive but they don't have the individualism and calm'ness that the other people have so they get stressed out try there best and fail then they go kill themselves because they take everything to seriosly?

Well wait if where so relaxed and calm and don't take things seriosly why do we just go "naw man it be coool~ Don't kill yourself it be takin' too much time and effort." or somthing weird like that, but no we be all "Oh man life is so pointless it be a big gaping void of nothing'ness" on account of us being lazy from what I said in the first paragraph?

anyway there ya go thats my ramble. I did it on the run so if the're be any questions don't be shy.

I think it's hormones more than anything else, but pressure and stuff is also a good answer. But then, school work and friends aren't the only thing, it's the pressure society puts on kids now days. Let's take MTV. I watched an episode of America's Next Top Model today where for half an hour two girls screamed at each other. IT WAS INSANE. The news on TV effects everyone, including parents. The thing is, our parents are more mature and look at that stuff and shake their heads in shame. Teenagers watch it like there's no tomorrow -- an influence maybe? That, and as you get older you don't want to talk to your parents about how you feel because they are usually the ones making the problem. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but does anyone notice how stupid adults are when it comes to kids? Think about, and really think about it. Maybe Americans have not graduated high school, gone to college, and got married at a young age. When you are a teenager, you start to lose that innocence you once had and realize that the world isn't so perfect. I have a friend right now who get drunk because a group of girls cruelly gossiped about her. Then, I found out three more kids in my eighth grade classroom and my so-called Christian school had gotten drunk more than once in their life. Parents at my school either don't allow drinking in their house because they feel if it's there their kids will become alcoholics (most of the time not true) or the parent feels it's okay with the beer and wine being their. My classmates are breaking up and dating like there's no tomorrow. I can't tell you how much it bugs me -- and when I ask why, I get the same answer: because they're depressed. They want to feel better, but they're only fourteen years old! How do you know what's up and down in the world? Is it not the internet and news that influences you that this is your way out, even though your life isn't as bad as it could be? It's because your still a kid. Hormones are kicking in, you're losing your innocence and you're ignorant of the world around you.

Or so, that's the conclusion I've come to.
