You two have been super busy. Just because we start a game doesn't mean there won't be opportunities to jump in later. I don't plan on having kicked the bucket by the time you two have everything squared away.

It's cool. I was just hoping JL would keep going since the others have all died, and despite that I've been busy as heck even when I wasn't waiting on her something about it left me feeling like I killed the game/was the local leper.

Depending on what happens to the gov. and one other job prospect of mine after graduation, I might have lots of time for a few months, vanish, repeat, and then be off for good, or settle into a decent schedule. We'll see.

COMPILATION LIST, MARK 1

EDITION
Joseph Severn - Either
xX_Terei_Xx - No comment
Paidi tou Selini - Strongly prefers 3rd
Plainsfox - No comment
Mongooseh - No comment
WhimsicalXellos - Either Or
BegrudginglyGood - Strongly prefers 4th

QUEST
Joseph Severn - 6 -> 2 -> 3
xX_Terei_Xx - 3 -> 4+5
Paidi tou Selini - 6 -> 2 -> 1
Plainsfox - 3 -> 1 -> 2
Mongooseh - 1+4+6
WhimsicalXellos - ???
BegrudginglyGood - Any

Okay, that's everyone.

For edition, there was no major pull one way or the other.

However...

Ms. Selini preferred 3rd edition because she really wanted to do that Dragon combo with Ms. Good, and it's only available in that edition.

However, Ms. Good prefers 4th edition.

As such, unless someone strongly feels otherwise, it looks like this game will be 4th Edition.

That leaves the matter of the quest.

It was a tie between two of them, with two more close behind. Here's what I want for everyone.

Vote on your FIRST and SECOND picks. This will be the determining factor. If it still looks like a split, half of you will go to the first, half of you to the second. Only four choices this time.

1.) It is the topaz championship. You are not participants, but you are MENTORS to the participants. One from each of the nine major clans will be represented, which means you'll each have to be from a different clan (oh boo hoo). What are you willing to do to help your clanmate win?

2.) The daughter of the Daidoji Daimyo is due to wed the son of the Shosuro Daimyo, though she is in love with the son of the Hiruma Daimyo. You must escort her to her arranged wedding in Scorpion lands. THE THREE MOST NINJA FAMILIES ARE INVOLVED. WHAT WILL YOU DO? WHAT WILL YOU DO?

3.) You are all young samurai who have yet to find a spouse. Things are in disarray after the chaos of the Destroyer War, and all clans are still trying to take stock of who they've lost and who remains. You are all lower echelon buke. Go, find a spouse in a matchmaking festival!

4.) The rampaging hordes of the Destroyer have wrecked havok all over Rokugan; no corner remained untouched. You are cartographers (or their escorts) hired to create up-to-date maps for Imperial use. Go forth, and explore! Rediscover the lands of your ancestors! (Note: I've played this campaign IRL, and it was fun; this will be a team effort to explore!)

VOTES
1 = 1+1 = 2
2 = 1 = 1
3 = 1+2+1 = 4
4 = 2+2+2+2 = 8

I'm happy with 3rd for that combo, if that helps...or does that change too much for you?

Vote - 4 & 3, purely because they seem most in line with my character (unmarried and a loner who enjoys adventuring).

Also, just a quick question about the Destroyer War, any chance we can get like a brief overview of how the rest of that could have gone down...for character back story reasons?

Unless Terei and Mongooseh BOTH vote for 3 and not-4, then it looks like it's cartography time! And I'm pretty sure Mongooseh had no interest in 3.

4th edition cartographers it will be!

I'll help anyone out who's unfamiliar with 4th edition, but make basic starting characters (40 cp). Same rules I always use: I must have the book. That's the 4th edition core rulebook, Book of Air, Emerald Empire, and Great Clans.

The armies of the Destroyer have been shattered, but the Empire is in a state of chaos and more experienced surviving samurai are needed for important duties. You lot are barely touched by the war, since you're either young enough where your gempukku (which was hastily done) was only just completed and you never really got to see any of the war, or you were hurt in the war and have recovered slowly, and ready to get on your feet once more after all this time and shake all the dust off.

A matter which I will let the seven of you (seven samurai yay!) discuss is if one of you will be the imperial-chosen cartographer to do all the mapping, or if you all want there to be an actual NPC Imperial cartographer that you are escorting. This is a completely voluntary choice.

The pros and cons are as follows:
PC CARTOGRAPHER
Pro: You'll be important and all the other players' primary objectives are to keep you safe at all times.
Con: You'll be forced to "be responsible" to your duties, often missing out on adventuring shenanigans!

NPC CARTOGRAPHER
Pro: Someone 'removed' from plot that you are supposed to protect, but if you go off and do some adventury things you'll have less emotional concern of "screwing over your fellow player".
Con: This means the NPC might be out of your sight at times, and I'm a bad bad man.

When I played this, we had an NPC cartographer but were given the option to be the cartographer if we had wanted. I want to extend the same courtesy to all of you. You can still be cartography-y if you want without being THE cartographer, don't worry.

If there's an NPC, I'm going to have everyone PM me an advantage and a disadvantage that the Imperial might have, and I'll decide secretly what they end up with (Keeping in mind the 10 point limit from disadvantages as normal).

I'm kind of falling asleep as I type this, so tomorrow I'll post what I had intended for both Jade Legacy and Destroyer War if they had continued.

I vote for cartography, I wouldn't mind making the yoritomo courtier I have in mind have the necessary skills to be a cartographer.

Future plans of Destroyer War

After the first assault on the wall, the heroes would have had a brief reprieve... before the mecha armies of the Destroyer showed up and tore through the wall and the beleaguered defenders. They would have assaulted the section of wall I deemed 'weakest', whether PCs were there or not. Any PCs would have been ordered away when the battle was lost; they had to get inside Rokugan and defend the citizens of the Crab Lands.

The first year of the Destroyer War, 1171

Samurai got ordered to protect various settlements within the Crab Clan. The PCs and a handful of NPCs (half from your chosen list if they survived, half brand new). As the year progressed, you only see occasional combat with the Destroyer Horde; most of your problems come from bandits and really bad weather (the first winter is REALLY bad).

You stay until winter passes, then as Spring begins and the thaw happens, Destroyer activity increases sharply, pressuring you to pack up and leave with everyone with the harvest you had collected. A samurai from another group guarding a village shows up, wounded. Your farming village is one of the last ones; some have already left, but most have been wiped out and it's a small miracle you've lasted this long. Everyone is regrouping over the border in Crane lands. Any PC who does not leave would be killed when the village is overrun. If the entire party stayed, it would lead to a final losing battle of the war.

The second year of the Destroyer War, 1172

You escort an entire village across war-torn Crab lands towards the Crane. Any NPCs you chose that you have not seen would be here. You see more Destroyer activity now, including some more unique creatures. The Rakshasa general is the primary antagonist for you this year, as he's spearheading the part of the campaign that is wrecking the area you're in.

Beyond that, the major problems encountered is starvation and disease, as well as the danger of internal conflict. You have more fellow samurai available as soldiers (as well as peasant militia) though so your own force is greater too... but it wouldn't have been enough. There's a lot of guerrilla warfare here rather than a flat-out major assault, but pressure scales as the horde attempts to crush you by the end of the year.

Winter would come again, and attacks would die down. Messengers arrive to tell you that the hordes of the Destroyer are turning towards Scorpion Lands, but this area is still in danger. It seems that the horde had been seeking something out and they now 'have the scent'. Crane defenders would hold the city you were in as you get ordered to assist the Scorpion counter-assault against the enemy.

The third year of the Destroyer War, 1173

Mostly unwritten, it would have involved samurai armies on a much larger scale counter-assaulting the Destroyer hordes, focusing on the area near the city of Kashi Mura. Hopefully you would have picked up your skills by now as this is the most combat-heavy year. The primary antagonists in this chapter are Kali-Ma's elite guard, even though you WOULD encounter her once (and hopefully have enough sense not to engage her personally). The war is not won directly by you guys, as those who know your history would already realize.

However, as the war reaches its closing, the Elites are on their way to assist Kali-Ma as she encounters Fu Leng. If you did not stop them, they would have helped her enough against the Dark Lord that she would have been strong enough to counter Daigotsu. A lot would hinge on your success here, to determine who truly is victorious in the war.

Future plans of Jade Legacy

The point of the chapter you got stuck in was to find something. Heichi Miko, younger sister of the Boar Daimyo all those centuries ago, was summoning characters one at a time back, since the 'portal' was opened by Agasha Ryuden shortly before. Ryuden had left his companions in the area, because the presence of life was required to keep the portal open.

You had three days to 'get it right'. In the present, those left would have had to hold the area versus the cultists and against Daigotsu Matsusuke (though you wouldn't know of any 'Daigotsu' family yet; they were just forming). Matsusuke would try to take the role of commander here, as he had the Soft Hearted disadvantage. Despite being a horrendous killing machine, his goal was to drive you out. Leaving behind your friends would have basically caused them to be captured when/if they returned. Could only two of you have held off such a pressing assault? What costs were you willing to pay?

In the past, Ghost Miko was trying to show you something. The point of the past half of it was to show you that history was immutable. You did not truly exist at that time, and you were not involved in the slaughter of the Boar (one way or another). Miko steals a scroll from Ryuden and hides is before she is captured, and she is forced to watch the slaughter of her clan one by one to try to break her and tell him where it is. However, the Shakoki Dogu are awakened by the ritual and start stealing away the few surviving Boar. Miko is killed, but her soul was still taken by the Shakoki Dogu rather than allowed to pass on to the afterlife or before it was merged with the anvil.

She persists in the place of Shiro Heichi, her soul stuck in the moment it just left her body, and as such she haunts the region. People have come and gone over the centuries, even squatted in the area, but the death of the magistrate and opening of the portal had revived her with power, allowing her to send you back.

As soon as you learned the location of the scroll she stole (even if it was only the first night with Shosuro Miyako by herself), then that chapter would have ended. When you found the scroll, it detailed the ritual Ryuden used to create the Anvil of Despair. With this information, one could probably find a way to destroy it... or create a new one. Either way, with Kaiu Kagae would have bonus experience for his Higher Purpose since he would probably be the one best able to make sense of the scroll, and learn some smithing techniques from it.

The immediate future

Your next mission would have taken you to Unicorn lands, to meet a very young Akasha, being tutored my Iuchi Gemmei (from Act 1!), the first returning face. The main plot of this one is that there was a second golden pearl kept by the Naga before they returned to their Great Sleep, and Akasha had strong premonitions that it was danger. With Terei's and Good's characters, you would have gone to Shinomen Mori to a Naga temple (that you could only enter and explore in Yume-do!). Here, the person who won that tournament I held would have gotten their magical item.

The party finds a couple thieves as they have looted the temple, and as everyone awakes, they get away, and you have to chase them to Ryoko Owari Toshi where they no doubt seek to make a profit of their ill-gotten gains, including the second golden pearl!

It becomes a four-way race between the band of professional ronin graverobbers, a yakuza-esque criminal cartel, and a Mirumoto treasure hunter, as well as you guys. How well could you maneuver through the city of masks and lies to steal back something of great importance to an entire race?

Far future plot hooks

When Bayushi Kojiro returns home after that chapter, he finds out that Bayushi Koyuki, his wife, is FURIOUS with him. He soon learns that killing that peasant in the tea house in Act 1 in Crane Lands caused a bit of political backlash, and his newborn son is fostered into the Crane as recompense for his deeds.

Beyond that, Ujina Denbe would have been caught up in a Hare chapter where his clan and especially his immediate family is accused of Maho by the Scorpion and attacked, causing inter-party conflict.

Storylines I planned to cover...

The Mystery of the Disappearing Crane - All the pretty Crane men have been disappearing in Kyuden Doji! The primary NPC of this one was someone I intended for Kagae to marry; a Plain Jane of Crane. She had so very little to offer and was double anti-social, but had been given a nemurani by a maho tsukai that trapped souls in print if she wrote about it. She would get crushes on pretty boys, write about them, and they would vanish in the night. Who amongst you would have been willing to be written into the diary to save all those hunky men trapped within?

The Tale of the Creeping Estate - The home of a wealthy Lion seems to have become possessed. The entire home. It destroys parts of itself to rearrange it's layout and effectively 'move'. As it encounters more buildings, it devours its pieces, making itself into a larger building capable of faster destruction. HOW DO YOU STOP A HOUSE?

The Voyage of the Ship of Mist - While traveling to Mantis lands, you find a ghost ship has been assaulting other Yoritomo vessels on the high seas. However, as you attempt to track it down and find the source of the phenomena, you'll learn more is going on involving the crew of this ship than you might have ever guessed...

Blood and Venom - This is the Scorpion story I had planned, where the Scorpion and the Hare would have a conflict. Denbe's older brother would have been taken prisoner, and they arrest Denbe as a maho-tsukai. They attempt to torture him to get him for information. They tell him they know he's not the maho-tsukai of his clan, but they do have undeniable evidence that he's harboring one who is, and they try to get that information from him in a 1984 manner.

Meanwhile, while the rest of the players are trying to clear his name, they learn that the Hare have been set-up by a real Maho Tsukai not amongst their number, and they have to track this person down to prove the Hare's innocence. But they would learn that Soshi Maru had a hand in the events involved as well. What roles would Maru and her yojimbo, Shosuro Naizen, play in this story? Just how deeply were they involved?

That's all I have memorized; the rest is written down, and I do not seem to be able to find the papers sad
