Kate looked at Marcus and then back at the forest. The thought of wandering in the forest kind of scared her, but she figured that if she did stay the night, someone would notice and come after her and then Marcus and his dad would get in trouble with her family. "No thanks... If I stay much longer, my family will wonder where I am and then it would cause trouble for you. Thank you though." Kate said before walking back the way she had come.

Marcus simply nodded to her words as he walked away. He knew that he should probably escort her at least partway home, but he didn't feel like tempting fate. He pulled off his boots and dropped both pairs next to the door. He propped the bow on the wall, and unstrung it. He worked his way to the table, where a simply dinner of stew and bread awaited him. He and his father ate quietly. There was little to be spoken of, in their quiet life.

Kate wandered around for a long time and found that she was somewhat lost. She had a general idea of where she was, but it still made her worry. She finally got out of the forest when it began to get darker outside. She finally got back home once it was completely dark. Her clothes were worn from her hiking around and the people who were in charge of looking after her scolded her for sneaking off. She listened to the lectures for a hour before finally getting to go to bed.

Marcus woke early the next morning, quickly lacing on his new boots and heading out the door. He worked at the tree first, laboring to free the arrowhead that had been buried there. It took his nearly half an hour, but the metal soon came free. He placed it in the pocket of his pants, ready for another long day of hunting. Remembering Jericho, he whistled. The dog came running, jumping and panting happily. Marcus smiled, heading into the woods again.

Kate woke up late that morning and laid in bed. She had no doubt that she would be confined to her home and would be watched like a hawk. Kate sighed softly and looked up at her ceiling. She couldn't stop thinking of Marcus. He confused her, but somehow made her long to be around him. Kate didn't understand it. Kate sighed softly and just laid in bed.

Marcus was not doing quite as well in his hunt today. A rabbit and pair of squirrels hung from his belt, but it appeared that a storm was rolling in. He whistled for the dog to go home. Jericho was irrationally afraid of thunderstorms. Marcus forged on stowing the bow so that the string would not get damaged. The rain started coming down soon after, and quickly escalated. It didn't bother Marcus, but it would hamper his navigational ability.

Kate heard the rain from outside and closed her eyes. The sound of rain was calming on occasion. Kate looked around for a moment before walking out of her room. She asked one of the servant girls for an umbrella. The servant girl obliged, but asked Kate to stay on the ground of the house and to not wander off. Kate promised that she wouldn't wander off and then walked outside and into the rose garden that the gardener took care off for her family. She liked looking at all the different flowers and trying to name them.

Marcus stalked through the woods, and knew abruptly that he was lost. The rain was coming down hard now. His hair was slicked to his head, and his clothes clung to his skin, even through the scant protection of the overhead leaves. He focused on getting somewhere more protected, out of the cold. After a while, he saw lights ahead. Summoning the last reserves of energy from his cold body, he started running toward them.

Kate looked around the rose garden and spotted a bench that was covered from the rain and had a towel on it. She assumed that a servant had put it there so Kate would have something in case she got wet. Kate sighed softly and then walked over to the bench and sat down.

Marcus stumbled towards the lights, barely noticing that it seemed to be a garden. He looked around for people, and noticed someone on a bench. "Thank the gods! I'm lost, and it's damn cold out here. I don't suppose you have a barn or stable I could take shelter in?" The driving rain obscured the girls face, but he hoped she was friendly.

Kate looked at Marcus and didn't recognize him either. It was raining too hard. Kate thought about refusing because she would be told that it's not good to welcome strangers into her home especially since the stranger was a commoner, but Kate couldn't leave someone out in the rain. Kate grabbed the towel that was sitting on the bench next to her and took the umbrella she had been using up. Kate walked over to Marcus until he was shielded from the rain by her umbrella as well. Kate recognized him, but just gave him the towel before saying, "Here. Come with me and you can stay in the house until the rain goes away."

Marcus flinched a little when he recognized the girl. He took the towel reluctantly, suddenly realizing where he was. With it draped over his shoulders, he followed the girl who's name he had yet to learn. The umbrella was very welcome, though his clothes were already soaked through. "I thank you. The storm is worse than I thought it would be. Hopefully it clears up by morning so I can get home."

Kate looked at Marcus and gave him a soft smile. She wasn't in the mood to go with her act of being better than others. "It's no problem really. I'm sure there's a spare room that you can stay in. I haven't eaten dinner yet too so you can join me if you'd like. You've probably been wandering around for a while." Kate said kindly. When she got to the door a servant opened it for her and looked shocked to see Marcus. "Lady Kate.. umm... If you don't mind my asking, who is your friend?" The servant stuttered. Kate shrugged and said, "I don't even know his name yet, but I've met him quite a few times. He can't find his way home in this storm so he'll be staying with us for the night. When's dinner?" It wasn't a question if Marcus could stay, it was an order. Marcus would stay as long as she said so or he wanted. "The cook is making it now. Shall I tell him to make extra?" The servant said, seeming to regain her composure. Kate shook her head calmly. They always gave her too much food and she ate alone because her parents stayed in their room all day.

"I thank you for your hospitality. I haven't eaten since a bit of porridge this morning, been hunting all day. My name, by the way, is Marcus." He asked nothing about the girls name, figuring she would share it if she wanted to, and wouldn't if she didn't. His eyes scanned the interior of the manor and the servant, both impressed and disgusted by such a grandiose display of wealth. His own home made this one seem a palace in comparison. But shelter is shelter. It's not as if I have much choice at the moment.

Kate shrugged and said, "It's nice to have another person to talk to around here. My pa- Nevermind." Kate didn't want to tell Marcus about her parents being sick and her not having any friends. Kate walked along, still holding the umbrella instead of just giving it to the servant. She saw the place to put it and put it there calmly. Kate looked back at Marcus and said, "My name's Kate by the way. We can go to the table to eat now. I normally eat by myself."
