Just wanted to make a point...
As I said before, I support HT

Also if people are running around drinking blood... I think they were messed up before HT ever came along.

Really? How long has HT been around? Because I remember reading something on the subject of 'goth' saying it really started getting big around 1998. I don't know if HT was around then, or that.

According to Wikipedia, (though I know many feel Wikipedia is not the most reputable source).

Quote:
Goth is a modern subculture that first became popular during the early 1980s within the gothic rock scene, a sub-genre of post punk. It is associated with characteristically "gothic" tastes in music and clothing.

Quote:
Hot Topic (NASDAQ: HOTT) is an American chain store aimed at teenagers and young adults. It has a large number of stores across the United States, the majority of which are located in shopping malls. The first Hot Topic store was opened in 1988 by Orv Madden. The chain specializes in pop-culture (but mainly music)-related fashion and merchandise, including clothing, books, comics, jewelry, CDs, records, posters and other paraphernalia. Also, they back major counterculture concert festivals like Ozzfest and recently Sounds Of The Underground. It caters to a number of youth-oriented subcultures and countercultures, such as metal, punk, goth, club, street, otaku and lounge, as well as pinstripe suits and a number of general and 1980s retro pop culture products. Products from Tripp NYC and Lip Service can be found.

You can't just take one word, call yourself that, and portray something totally unlike it without showing a large degree of ignorance.

I agree definitly, in my opinion where HT is described as having the goth clothes, and I'll admit they have a few, it doesn't trun everything else in the place into 'goth' clothing.

The biggest trouble I see in it all is what fashion is based off of what gets misconstrewed, and confused with what is popular, after all a person is not a 'goth' their clothes are, so it doesn't make tinkerbell a symbol of the 'goth' culture if someone who calls them selves a 'goth' wears her on a black t-shirt.

To clarify a little on what I mean:

Goth and gothic are different and yes they are labels, not for people for the clothing people wear.
Goth is a modernized version of Gothic, bondage pants, black shirts, heavy meatals worn, the style itself origionated from 'goth' bands and their performers and followers.
Gothic is best described in any Anee Rice vampire novel. Morticia Addams, Lilly Munster, are a few television referances. Complete refferance in style being to; things inspired my the middle ages, and renasance era's normally made with darker undertones, however that is meerly a generalization.
Elegant Gothic Lolita- Where much of this clothing style has renassance and later undertones, (the ruffles, the layers, the underthings) they do not portray what society considers gothic. (In personel opinion Anne Rice and the Addam's family are partically to blame for this) EGl, is gothic, hence the title however it is literal, much like in the goth era of origional fashion colors are mostly bright, and cheerful (I.E. 1800's dresses in comparison to B,TSSB Dresses and accesories.)

Punk/cyber/whatever else, can be subcategoried as a part og this and that 'goth' however when you sub category you may notice that most times gothic is dropped. (I.E.-Punk Lolita, Sweet Lolita, Wai-Lolita)

Now if someone wants to prettify those statements feel free to go right ahead and do it, pictures would be nice as well.. (most of this was taken from a friends final in fashion studies in New York, but as it's part of her grade, I did my best to rewords and paraphrase where necessary.) I'm beginning to think it would be nice to have a referance thread as a stickie, or maybe announcement, something to be used on such and argumentive ocasion.

Nadima hit is square on the head, EGL is gothic, HT 'gothic' is simply goth from the style of rock bands in the 80's.

I would like to state that we are a literate guild, so labeling everything goth becasue you don't want the two letters at the end is just going to get you flames (yes it's against the rules, no I'm not an oracle i can't stop it before hand.)

Anything else to cover:
HT as a company tries to prevent calling things goth, however many of their items touch base in more than one category I.E. the bondage choker is goth, however on a proper kadona could be very gothic.

Now for the fun fun mod stuff:

This thread was created with the statement as for opinions, opinions are being given.
We will not call other users whinney for stating and literatly defending their opinions.
if you discover you are wrong about something live with it. The subject of Hot Topic is a touchy one here but it's a good one, where pretty much everyone agree's it's not Hot Topic's fault people are ignorant, there are still personel opinions on it. And to restate, you can't ask an opinion, and then insult someone for having the different opinoin than yourslef, thats hypocritical, and definitly wrong to do to someone.

Now I could say you need to apologize for this and that and threaten thread bannishment and all, but we were all told that as children and the muttered I'm sorry didn't amount to a grain of sand on the moon. And i think it's condecending to do so. However if there is anymore bickering away from a discussion (defending yourself in the effort to prove your point is debating not bickering, sideswept comments about a direct person is bickering.) than I will simply delete your post, and if it continues you will be banned. I don't see anyone here reunning to getting banned over something as little as this, however I know that blood runs high when it's matters you believe in, so please lets just be 'adult' about all of this.

Where as I hope this covers all of the things I have noticed in here, I do find the topic of interest, espically with the way it's widening, and as I may have already stated would like a little help in creating a special place for a few direct definitions of styles and such for referance to the society. Interested pm me.

And here I thought choosing to stop argueing was the adult thing to do.

I just thought it was a bit uncalled for that I told her I would not continue if she replied, and then her posting a huge retort that took up half the page, quoting me out of context over and over. However, it's fine. I can fix this. 3nodding

I'm sorry to of bothered everyone. *bows and exits*

The only trouble was when the debate stopped and the argumentive insulting began, other than that it was fine. you both had good arguments, but simply getting upset and fighting about it was childish.

Positive:

HT is giving it a try
HT is doing fairly well with it in the money department
They are cheeper
The designs are very close to the real thing
They sell them in most sizes (More then BTSSB and Meta)

Negative:

HT uses cheep materials
The skirts are just a bit too short
They can't seem to get off the black and white kick
HT is giving uneducated loli's the wrong idea
HT is giving it a try

Neautral givies: (As in, the bennefet of the doubt in HT's favor)

They use bad models on the site
-BUT the dresses look a bit better when we try them on.
They do not flare like Japanese brand name dresses
-Before they sold these pieces, HT sold petticoats
The dresses can be VERY cute
-Not so much if you follow the washing direction on the tag

I dont care for HT very much either, their clothes, though pretty, are like halloween clothes, ment to live for one day, and then fall to peices. T,T

The only thing I ever found at HT that was even Lolita-relevant are my anckle boots, the lace up ones. I love them to death and think that they are very victorian lolita styleish.

HT is for goth, and they shouldnt try and harder then that. They BOMBED it when they dried to go prep-punk with all their colorful, and pink stuff, slowly, and lately, I've realized their going back to their roots, but they dont have to drag lolita down to their level. T,T

One time I was with a group of friends at the mall and we were all dressed up and stuff. Then as we walked by this old women she whispers (however, loudly) to the person she was with, "Goth is so out.". Of course we all heard and started laughing. As we continued walking we were all, "What the hell would she know? She's old!".

Even though, old people know more than any of us think... ninja

Hot Topic makes shopping a bit easier for people like me who don't a) have the money for a $300 dress or b) live away from bigger cities. I agree with a previous poster on that I don't mind if someone has the occasional H.T. item but I hate looking at people who are decked out fully in Tripp clothes. Especially those baggy pants with the bondage straps.

Personally I think it's what your looking for at the current time. I don't think it should be considered your not a true J fashion-er if you shop at Hot Topic. It's all your own opnion. Hot Topics just easier since you don't have to worry about import tax and it's probably easier to find one then a solely J Fashion shop. Then again maybe the same can be said for Hot Top, maybe not.

Hot Topic...hmm...
I think this store does have some very Loli-inspired clothing.
I think that it is expensive for the quality and selection you get there, therefore I do not shop there unless there is something I can only get specifically there.
I know there was also some debate about the dresses and such.
I don't see why people dont think that it is cool that they are opening up to a new style such as that.
Personally, it's fine with me. But I am not a regular customer.
