Another thing I just thought of.

I really have no way to get places until the weekend rolls around. What do I do in between? What if, say, I got bored with what I currently had, and decided I wanted to try something new. What would you suggest I do, anime-wise, if I decided I wanted to watch something, but had no way to get to a friend's house or go to the store?

You're asking me what I think you should do with your free time? You know, there are other things to do other than watch anime and read manga. Also, I didn't suggest downloading something you immedietely intend to buy damages the industry, I wanted to know how watching something and NOT buying it DOESN'T damage the industry...?

Ooooh, what titles did you get? ^_^

I bought Jing: King of Bandits - Twilight Tales and Boy Princess. Have you read either of them? I also picked up a few more, including Star Trek: The Manga, which I couldn't resist XD

Let me ask you this. Why should a person support a creator of something that the person doesn't like? You wouldn't buy a CD if you didn't like the artist, would you? To support something means you like it, that you're willing to buy it. If you don't like it, you wouldn't willingly give them your money to support what they're producing and releasing. That seems illogical to me.

That's completely true, but completely illogical as well. How do I know I dislike something before I've bought it? By all means, don't support something to you don't like, but don't spoil it other people like by stealing it. The industry doesn't cater for you and you alone, right?

Well obviously, but if you buy something only to find out it sucks, then you've pretty much screwed yourself out of however much the DVD cost. A sum of money that could have gone to another series that you know you DO like. I suppose if it's a $5 used purchase you really can't go wrong, but if it's a full-priced thing for $20, that's $20 down the drain.

And I don't see how previewing it via download or stream is ruining anything for anyone. It's no different from borrowing a DVD from a friend, you're still not paying anything.

That's the risk you take. You buy something on the assumption that it might be good. If it is, you've just uncovered a great gem. If it isn't, too bad, try again next time, it's not like you've wasted a fortune. Besides that, if you reeeeaaally regret spending the money, return it to the shop, give it to someone who might enjoy it or sell it on eBay (you wouldn't do the latter, but someone else might). That's what being an anime/manga fan is about.

Besides, do you walk into shops and pick things up randomly? No, usually you'll look at the cover and read the synopsis. If it's manga, you might flick through or read the first few pages. If you really reaaaally don't want your precious $20 to go to waste, you do your research. Wikipedia, ANN, Gaia, etc. These sites are all available for you to get that all important review.

My point isn't that it's sensible to waste money, or even that it's a bad idea to preview things (indeed, why not borrow from a friend?) it's the legality of how you go about these things. Besides that is the issue of having the anime/manga fandom experience.

(I basically wrote this stuff earlier, but yeah...)

Coming from a person who downloads music for free on a regular basis, the legality (or illegality, in this case) of it doesn't bother me one bit.

Fair enough, then I suppose that explains everything right there. Even though you're finally able to admit what you're doing is illegal, you don't seem to excude any empathy towards the artists and companies you're hurting. I guess the entire issue doesn't come down to whether or not people believe they're doing something wrong, but whether or not they even care :/

It's a mixture of both, for me. I suppose it would be more responsible to do more research, but even that has its limitations. The best way to experience the anime is to actually sit down and watch it. The storyline could be good, but the delivery could be horrible. One can never truly know until they watch it.

Again, that's true. But of course you understand there's a line you have to cross in order to watch anime illegally that true fans aren't willing to cross. Obviously I can't convince you to feel bad about it, as you're clearly set in your ways about this issue, but you can at least understand my point of view, right?

I can go as far as to make note of your point of view and to respect it on that matter, but I can't understand why you and other people are so against downloading. It's a good tool, but like everything else, has been horribly abused, so only a bad reputation remains.

It's a marvellous advantage in this day and age, truth be told. I'm only against it the extent that it disrespects the industry or breaks the law. If I'm not able to buy it, downloading is the only way to go short of flying to Japan to watch it on television XD

I also think it's so unfair to other fans that some people steal everything they read and watch, while there are kids out there who save every penny of their pocket money to afford a box set or a couple of tankobons every few months.

The law is a bit absurd in my opinion, which is why I often disregard it. The abuse of the tool of downloading has obviously led to copyright laws being put in place to prevent people from getting it for free, but if people would have used it correctly in the first place, that sort of law would never have been made. gonk

And about the unfairness to other fans, THAT I can understand. The problem is, not everybody is satisfied with just what they have on their computer, and actually purchase what they download. I'll agree 100% that the people who download everything and never buy really need to suffer a computer system crash, but not everybody is like that.

In a way, I guess you could say I've put myself on an honor system, since I DO download, where I promise myself I'll buy what I like, and be very careful to make sure that I get anime I actually enjoy. I don't want to end up like everybody else, who downloads and never buys.

I can totally understand that, and actually respect your reasoning to some degree. I don't see how viewing with intent to buy damages the industry at all and, if it does, someday I'll probably find out how.

Then again, you can't put yourself above people who steal everything they watch/read because, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, you're a law-breaker the same as them. Also, despite supporting the artists and companies you like, you're crippling the ones you don't like.

I can't exempt myself from the illegality of downloading just because I buy an awful lot of material. I know it's not equally comparable, but only killing one person still makes you a murderer (Sorry to use such crude reasoning, but it highlights my point exacltly.) Downloading (depending on the material) still makes you a thief.

Anyway, I think we've exhausted this debate pretty well. Perhaps we should discuss bootleg DVDs to thrown a spanner at those who DO buy everything they watch? XP
