Great discussion! I love reading about alternative fuel sources. Gas here is at $3.89 for regular, and $4.10 for plus, last time I checked.
I've always thought it was only a matter of time before gas prices started forcing people out of their cars and into public transport / their bikes / their feet. With all the hubbub going on about it (the news is constantly interviewing people lately who say they now have to choose between gas for their car and food for their families), I believe it's only a matter of time until the government is forced to allow the production of electric cars. Funny that that was brought up too, since my Mom and I were just talking about the disappearance of them the other day. Such a load of crap. *sigh* Hooray for capitalism!

I know what you mean. xp But for many people, public transportation and bikes aren't an option. I live in suburbia where there are no buses around. It would also be a bit much to ride a bicycle 25 miles to work. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place. That is why I want to get out of the country. When I was in England, I was never in a place where the desitination couldn't easily be reached by walking/bus/underground. The US is so spread out. sad

I'm almost afraid to get a car now with how these prices are. I don't even have a job yet. I'd never be able to afford even borrowing a car. :3 My friend Cally's barely making her gas right now. Until the prices finally go down (I hope they should), I think I'm just gonna get used to biking all over the place.
Though that kinda brings up a dilemma - When I get my own house, how am I gonna get groceries? D= Might have to get a sidecar or two for my bike. >_>

I don't want my children ever seeing their grandma. >_> They'll visit you of course, and probably Steven and Trisha. But their grandma'll corrupt 'em. Worse than I will.

That's a good point Chibi. Where I live, the bus lines are shoddy at best, otherwise my hubby would probably be taking them to work already. But you have to expect (or hope) public transportation to rise to the occasion as demand goes up. Where there's money to be made, they'll usually find a way. lol
If I had a choice in the matter, I think I would wait another year or so before buying a new car. Give the manufacturers a chance to catch up with new technology and all that. I would still love to just buy myself a little scooter. I don't drive that much, and I can do a lot of my errands on a little scooter probably.
On the topic of bicycles, I grew up in a city where biking is a very popular way to get around, we're one of the most bicycle friendly cities in the US, but every year there are people who get killed by cars. They just had a silent ride in remembrance of all of the bikers who lost their lives on the street last year. I can only imagine how dangerous it is in some of the other cities, which is one of the reasons I don't bike a helluva lot more where I live now. There are too damn many idiots on the street even when I'm driving in a steel-encased automobile. rolleyes

I have actually been considering getting a scooter. It would really save money on gas. Then again, I am accident prone. sweatdrop

The national average is $4. Why did prices choose to go up before I have to travel practically cross country?

Digital Dust The national average is $4. Why did prices choose to go up before I have to travel practically cross country? That sucks DD. The price for regular gas just went up again over the weekend. It's now $4.11 at the cheapest gas station I know of! eek If you could kindly bottle up some of the DESTRUCTIVE MAGIK and ship some over to me Zom, I'd gladly give you a cheeseburger for it. 3nodding

I'm sorry, but my Destructive magic ran out. You can get some of my restoration magic, but that can't be bottled up and sent, nor does it have any greater use than as a rejuvenation technique.

I have been depressed at the prices. It costs more to go places than to actually do the thing that you drove to do! xp I could use some of that destructive magic to show the oil companies how I feel about all of this. *hops on a boat and leaves the US*

*Paddles after Chibi and drags her back*
Hey! No running off without taking the rest of us with you! talk2hand In all honesty though, I'm really trying to think of the gas prices as a positive thing. I used to curse the huge SUV's and Hummers I used to see guzzling away on city streets, thinking of how much they're polluting. But now people are trading their guzzlers in for more economically responsible vehicles. Sure, they've been FORCED to do it, but I think that was the only thing that would have severed the american public from their love of big cars.
It's hard for us now. A real pain in the a**, to be honest. But I'm trying to maintain a positive outlook for tomorrow. Not that gas prices will drop to a more affordable rate, but that we'll finally get a good alternative to gas. Five years ago, I tried to talk my husband into thinking about buying a hybrid electric car and he laughed at me. But he's not laughing quite as hard any more.
