Of course guard is a part of the band, this question gets so annoying, especially to those of us who have stuck with our band from the time we were itty sevie's (7th grade) to our senior year. It's even worse at my school because our wonderful football team treats everything involving the band worse than the dirt on their cleat (last year their manager actually broke our drum major's trumpet on the sideline with the water cooler, and refused to pay for it!) and then the band turns around and has the same attitude towards the guard. That's why our guard currently only has twelve people, majorettes, rifles, and silks combined. Our instuctor is thinking about cutting the rifles this year because there are only three of them. Sorry I got into rant mode, we're in the middle of band camp, and the ensueing drama...

Inora_Makani Our band didn't treat the colorguard like they were part of a band. But by the time I came in, they were finally starting to learn. I think a large part of the problem is the fact that the guard and the band gets separated so often in practices. Our director tried to fix that by making sure that whenever the whole band was doing something, the guard was invited too. It helped a lot. Not only that but the guard earned a lot of respect last season because we won 1st place in the Colorguard category in almost every single show, even if the rest of the band didn't do that well. I had it a little easier than the rest of the guard, and still do because I had friends already in band before I joined the guard, and I made more by volunteering to hold music books during football games. The only thing that needs to happen if a guard isn't being accepted is for the director to step in and for the guard to not give up and fight to put themselves in. Make friends. And to any band who thinks they can do better without a guard, I say b.s. There is a specific category called GE, at least in my circuit. And that would go way down if there was no guard. Colorguard are the crayons, the football field is the paper, and the marching band are the lines of the coloring book. As pretty as the picture might be, it's just not complete without color. Oops, ranting...sorry. omg i love what you said about guard being the crayons and all that. its so true. Honestly what fun is a picture without color? As for is guard part of the band of course we are. we arent always treated that way which is irritating but we are.

Of course we're part of the band. In my school, band and color guard are supported by the same booster club, and guard actually gets a ton more money for equipment, uniforms, two floors for winter (we have a JV and a varsity guard), and other stuff, despite the fact that we're only about 1/5 of the size of the band.
The band kids treat us as equals. Our weapons are equipment just like instruments are, and we "play" our weapons how they're supposed to be "played".

Duh the colorguard is a part of the band. Without us, it would be boring, and dull. And if the show is boring and dull, just let the football team play longer...

Ravitacus Of course we're part of the band. The band kids treat us as equals. Our weapons are equipment just like instruments are, and we "play" our weapons how they're supposed to be "played". my school was kind of the same but we didn't get extra money. On everything was "(school name) band and colorguard". During winter season we went off and did our own thing but for the Christmas concert and the spring concert that the band did the guard was expected to have a mini show. I dated a clarinet. My best friend was in pit. My second best friends were in guard. During band camp we would have half they day working together on marching and drill and then after lunch the band would go work on music, they'd have sectionals and then the brass and woodwinds would join together but drumline and pit usually practiced on their own until the final runthroughs at the end of the day and guard would spend all this time on learning our work. During the school year it was pretty much the same. We were very much a part of the band and included in everything they did. During winter season there was much more of a split but the guard room was still inside the band room and the bd was still technically our teacher. But even though we were more separate during winter there was still alot of cross over. We had bandos playing drums and performing in our winterguard shows, and there were guardos who were in the percussion ensembles shows and alot of the wind players picked up percussion instruments for the percussion ensemble (many didn't put them back down either, my senior year the entire pit was once clarinets). While the band guard and percussion were all kind of separate groups we were all part of one whole...like arms and legs of the same creature...it might be able to live without it but it just wouldn't function the same if one part were missing.

well i think im on the fence with this one. i will never deny that the color gaurd puts in just as much work as the rest of the band (especially with the gaurd instructor they have) but they always ******** up and get in peoples ways and one of them cut open one of the main trumpet players mouths so he couldnt play i think they are a part of the band but only when they work WITH us instead of trying to do their own thing and just not caring about us

wow some of these stories are really disappointing in my school the band is evry1 including guard and we all treat each other the same and we are a big family evn the freshmen (me and a good 4 other ppl) are treated the same we all get to chill in the band room we sleep in there when we dont wanna go to class or eat lunch and our bd doesnt say anything even if its a guard member so i dont know tht is just how we are s yeah we are really mad chilled as long as ur in the marching band evry1 in band loves u they may not lyk u but they put up with you and we get special treatment sometimes when we do good lyk when we have to stop rehearsal for the band sometimes one of the instructors will be lyk guard you can sit out if u want since the band doesnt know what their doing but we never sit out cuz we are a team and we should act lyk one and we are family too ^^
