For the halloween games we always dress up in our costumes and march in them for the show. That year I was a fairy and because it was supposed to be cold, I wore my trench coat that goes to my ankle. Instead of being cold, it rained, like a hurricane. The mud was knee deep and I stepped on the mouthpiece of a tenor sax played, who after that put it in his mouth and discovered the whole neck of the thing was filled with mud. My coat was soaked through and we were like 3 hours away from home. So, the bus ride home was long, cold, and wet.

We were at a competition and It rained all before our performance. We were all like "yaaaay" when it stopped for our turn, but then the middle of the field was literally a mud pit.

The bottom of my friend's Dinkle got sucked off.

A Saturday practice in the middle of a heavy storm ...
We were all soaked through ...
And freezing.
And on the practice field, which is entirely dirt ... which meant it was entirely mud.

Besides from being wet, the worst conditions we marched in was HEAT.
It was the summer Fair parade ...
we all looked like we'd gotten out of a shower, in the most disgusting way possible (Oh, wait that's still wetness ... eheh).

I haven't really been in bad marching weather, but the worst I've had was a little bit of rain, I guess I lucked out my first year! xd

Sophmore Year, Heart of America Marching competition at KU's Memorial Stadium. Weather: Below 20, Sleeting. It's so freaking cold out, and we had to warm up in the cold, both our intruments and our bodies. Then our BD gets a call saying that they cancelled finals, so it's all or nothing. Before getting off the buses, we had been informed that we weren't allowed to wear gloves if you weren't a DM or a tuba. So, me and some other flutes left our gloves on the bus. Then, two minutes before we go on, he tells us we can wear gloves, but too late. And, if one person forgets their gloves, nobody in your section can wear gloves. I was about ready to kill him. So, the entire show, my hands were painfully numb, and I couldn't feel my pinkie/D key, so I just hoped to God that I was playing the right thing and continued marching.

I hate playing when my hands are cold. I'm seriously the most miserable person on the planet when my hands are cold.

I'm from Far North Queensland, so none of this cold weather stuff for me. But I -do- get to march in torrential (and I mean torrential) rain. The sort of rain where the ground is completely sodden and sponging after all of about a minute. Heaps of fun! And when you march in Anzac Day parades in FNQ any woodwinds bring plastic bags or sheets, because it -always- rains really badly

i haven tbeen in reaallly bad weather, but i have some stories.
the year before me, it was a civil war theme and at a comp, there was so much fog on the field that the band literaly dissapeared and you could only hear them play. then, out of no where, they suddenly reapeared right as they were playing the push. they said it was the coolest effect during the show.
the next year when i was a freashmen, we had a 'we are not alone' show based on the movie close encounters of the 3rd kind. it was gloomy all day and it just so happened to start to rain right as we hit the field, but it was all misty and creepy that fit perfectly with our alien stuff. afterwards the woodwinds were freeking out and moms were rushing to get plumes, while us tubas were dry (i love the sousaphone when it rains, built in umbrella!)
the worst was when we had a morning rehersal before a weekend trip. it also just rained that night and sure enough, the field had a jiant mud puddle right in the middle. our BD even told us to alter our marching style so we wouldnt slip in the mud. but guess who sliped on the very first set we ran right after that. yours truely with a sousaphone. 2 baritones next to me said they just saw a foot in the air and flying mud. i fell, tried to quickly get back up to continue, but fell again. i got mud in my mouthpiece (the horn was ok!) and i had to call my mom so she could bring me another pair of pants! (sorry for the really long post)

ugh..i remembering marching in the parade for the opening of the wwII memoral in dc my freshman year...yah, if anyone knows, its preatty warm and moist there, so when it started raining, my glasses fogged up like a mother and i couldnt see where i was marching...i tried to get my band instructer to take them but he wouldnt, so i had to use one hand to unbutton my coat and put them away and the other hand to play my trumpet...it was the most annoying and uncomfortable we had been for a while

The worst weather we marched in was as the official representatives of Washington State in the Washington DC Fourth of July Parade.

There was a heat advisory for residents. Wool jacket, wool pants, wool overlay, plastic overshoes, plastic helmet, and gloves. It was only 2.5 miles, but it was in the hottest part of the day, over asphalt and no shade. Some people were were wearing pants underneath because we had to change on the buses afterwards. (it was suggested that we wear swimsuits)
