I came across a rather fascinating discussion on another message board that I frequent where one of the regulars is afraid to let his girlfriend read his writing. His reasoning behind this is he feels she might think his character's actions might reflect what kind of person he is or could potentially be. What do you all think? Do the kind of characters we write portray us in some way? Whether consciously or subconsciously?

Hmm... speaking from experience, I know I have been weirded out more than once when fellas have showed me something they've written, whether I was romantically interested or not, it made me feel like I wished I hadn't seen it. This wouldn't apply to all cases, however, but a few isolated ones, so I guess your friend is right to be cautious. Still, if he has a close enough relationship with his girlfriend, I wouldn't think it would be a problem, providing he tells her what you told us, why he was worried about her seeing it. I think honesty is the best policy.. see how she reacts to his feelings or if she even wants to see it. That being said, I never let people I'm romantically interested in read anything of mine either. =)

Thanks for the compliments, Headhunter and WildWildWindWhisperer. 3nodding Now here's two deleted scenes from another story/screenplay of mine; the character called Christy just happens to be me. rolleyes "Everything Changes in Time" Strings, flutes, and other whimsical instruments play softly as a small flame dances against a black backdrop. The image and music fades slowly out as the sound of footsteps approaching is heard. LANDLADY (off screen) …and here is the master bedroom. Her hand brings a key to a door knob and opens the door. CHRISTY (off screen) Oh my! It’s so roomy and beautiful! We just have to get it, Ryou! The landlady looks to RYOU BAKURA and Christy. LANDLADY Well, what do you think, Bakura-kun? Ryou steps into the room and looks around carefully taking it all in and nodding. RYOU (smiling) We’ll take it! Christy runs up to Ryou and embraces him. CHRISTY (whispering in his ear) I hope you’re not just doing this for me, Ryou. Ryou picks her up and twirls her around the room. RYOU No, I’m not. I like it, too! The landlady smiles and turns to head back out of the room. LANDLADY Shall we go to my office and fill out the paperwork? Ryou smiles and nods to her; she then leaves the room. * * * * * Other Deleted Scene* * * * * JOEY WHEELER, TRISTAN TAYLOR, and YUGI MUTOU have just left a leasing office of another apartment complex. JOEY (dancing) I can’t believe it! We finally got a place all of our own! Oh yeah! This is going to be the best school year e’er! Tristan and Yugi exchange looks and roll their eyes. Eventually they arrive back at their three vehicles; Joey’s truck, Tristan’s motorcycle, and Yugi’s SUV. JOEY (taking some small furniture out of his truck bed) Well, let’s get started unpackin’! Time’s a’wastin’!
Yugi and Tristan shrug and then start helping Joey unpack the rest of their belongings from the truck and SUV.

This is like tasting the whip cream ontop of the hot cocoa but not getting to the cocoa just yet 3nodding Ooh and Headhunter, not sure if I posted yet but I did read your piece with the merc and the jedi very nice. Now is this a rogue jedi, possibly one corrupted by the Sith? Also, I understand the whether a significant other reading one's work deal. Some of my writings I won't show (mainly poems negative or positive about exes, it's just bad form). Though when it comes to my stories I'm always looking for an audience. I date a lot of geeks so since I write a lot of fantasy, well, they are sort of the target audience. I was pretty stoked when the guy I'm sorta seeing (nothing official yet) said he liked what I had sent him of my story thus far. -boogies-

Thanks, Antoina! blaugh To answer the question that was posed earlier about giving relatives, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. some form of writing to them that might reveal something latent about ourselves as writers subconsciously or otherwise, I personally have had my mom read almost everything I write. Sometimes I pretty it up with my choice of words (like saying "darned", "durned", etc. instead of "damn" "damned", etc. since she doesn't swear and frowns upon swearing, but I don't even swear that much in my writing (only if the character tends to do it and/or if it's in "good taste" so to speak). I do agree that maybe to some extent we show a part of ourselves in our writing because it's how we see the world, fantasy or otherwise; it's impossible not to show ourselves in our writing I think. Even some of the great writers like, Shakesphere, Goethe, and others showed a bit of themselves in their work because we all have to find our own voice in our particular writing genres and works. 3nodding Anyway that's my opinion. I plan to write some more of my scenes and such after I work some more on my fanfic tonight. blaugh Also everyone else has also done a superb job of their writing, too. I can't pick out anyone in particular. sweatdrop Well, going to go for now as I have to figure out my next scene. heart

AntoniaMerEnfant I've read Sword Drill and My Lady Love but I haven't gotten to the other two yet. Neat pieces, are they stand alone works or part of a larger story? My Lady Love sounds very romantic, like something out of a fairy tale of days gone by. Yes..they are simply short quips... that pop into my mind. the above works are build up from creative thinking. I write many of these but my passion is novel writing. At present I am writing a novel titled 'Wind Swept' ....fantasy..fiction....mythical beings..a powerful female warrior....a dark kingdom battles, and romance.

The End of Gods **************
She strolls all through the countryside with her ancient staff of power held tightly within her grip. She wanders with the purpose of guarding the innocent and conveying judgment upon all evil. Functioning with grace, intellect, wisdom, experience, and raw power the young warrior disperses the laws of the land. She wields power with nothing more then the sword forged by the gods, and a staff from the angels. She is known as the Supreme Mistress.
A mechanical monster has been wondering the deep parts of the forest. It is lost within the ages, and has been slumbering inside a long ago forgotten tomb. A vast chamber of a tomb that contains clay rooms of cogs and sprockets. This monestrous beast is anticipating an awakening. It has been built to conquer the gods and place the lawmakers within chains. All so that the society of deviant gods may once more rule the planet.
That is what has been planned to occur. However with this brave Supreme Mistress holding the greatest earthly power known to humanity such is bound to not exist. She currently is kneeling within the most ancient cathedral sending prayers to the righteous gods
The hour however does draw near for the metal beast to once again be unleashed upon the world. The ticking grows louder. The prayer grow more intense. The clockwork machine of deviant creation longs to destroy her and all she represents. It is possible that with morning`s twilight the monestrous machine shall fulfill it`s need for oil to lubricate it`s cogs. To discover that bolt of electrical energy to boot it`s computer systems. With a twist, and computations it shall proclaim ‘ Destroy the gods!’
In that moment there shall be no requirement of prayer but action. Once more the gods shall send their greatest defender. They shall send out the Supreme Mistress knowing that she holds their existence within her humble hands.

Even if the charecter has nothing to do with me. They do reflecy a bit on the way you think, because you still have to understand the way your story/charecter works in order to make it believable, so I can understand his reservations. Yes, my typing shows why I need a good beta (though I'm pretty good at it too (for other people))

AntoniaMerEnfant Ooh and Headhunter, not sure if I posted yet but I did read your piece with the merc and the jedi very nice. Now is this a rogue jedi, possibly one corrupted by the Sith? Yup, she's a Dark Jedi that's gone rogue. I don't want to give away too much, but the bounty on her head was put there by her former master in the Sith. I wanted to do a story of a bad guy trying to save their own tail instead of a good guy trying to save the galaxy like you usually see in Star Wars. There's more coming soon. biggrin NessaChan Hmm... speaking from experience, I know I have been weirded out more than once when fellas have showed me something they've written, whether I was romantically interested or not, it made me feel like I wished I hadn't seen it. As for me, I try not to hold back in my writings because I want my various protagonists to be as diverse in their personalities as possible. I think it's because of that a lot of my characters come across as bigger bastards than I usually originally intend for them to. Like, Nevara in my SW story is the kind of person who'll do whatever she has to and step on whoever she needs to in order to see her goals come to fruition. I don't know, I've just always enjoyed writing the kind of person people love to hate I guess. Characters that are all good can be interesting too, but I never tend to write anyone whose immaculately good. For instance, in this one fantasy story I'm working on every now and then, I had a character who was part of a knightly order tasked with hunting and killing demons that plague the world. While he's considered one of the good guys and always does the right thing, he also ordered an entire town of plague ridden people wiped out before a particular demon's influence could spread. He didn't feel particularly bad about his decision at all. I guess that makes him the type that believes the ends justify the means. I'm not sure if writing about such characters says anything about me, and I actually enjoyed writing both characters a lot, but I'm sure I'd hate their guts if I ever met them in person. sweatdrop

I allow my thoughts to flow into exhaustion and then begin editing. I must release all that is within before I can create a controlled effort. With thats said I am only a 1/4 way complete.
