The Hedley Kow

"A poor woman finds a pot on the road. She thinks it must have a hole for it to be discarded, but optimistically decides she might find a use for it as a flowerpot. Looking inside she discovers it is full of gold pieces, and decides to drag it home in her shawl. She drags it for a while, but when she looks back, the pot has become a lump of silver. She decides this is better than gold, as it is less likely to be stolen, and goes on. After a time she turns back again, to find the silver has turned into a chunk of iron. She observes this will be easier to sell, and that the penny pieces it will bring would be safer than either gold or silver. She goes on again, and when she turns back a third time, the iron has become a rock. She exclaims how convenient this will be as a doorstop, and happily goes home.

When she reaches her home, the rock transforms again, revealing itself to be the Hedley Kow, a mischievous shapeshifting creature. The creature trots off laughing, leaving the woman staring after it. She proclaims that it was quite a thing to have seen the Hedley Kow for herself, and goes inside to think about her good luck."

Hermod and Hadvor

"A king and queen had a daughter, Hadvor, and a foster son, Hermod. One day, the queen died, after asking her husband to marry no one but the Queen of Hetland the Good. He agreed.

The king set to sea and found a beautiful woman with another, younger woman, both finely dressed, and a third woman, a maid. This woman told him that she was the Queen of Hetland the Good and had been driven from her land, but she would marry him. They married. Hadvor and Hermod took little note of her stepmother, but Hadvor became friendly with the maid, Olof. The king went to war, and the new queen told Hermod that he had to marry her daughter. He refused, and she cursed him to go to a desert isle and be turned to a lion by day and a man by night, never to be freed until Hadvor burned his skin. He cursed her to, as soon as he was free, become a rat and her daughter a mouse, and they would fight until he killed them.

Olof told Hadvor what had happened, and that the queen wanted to marry her to her brother, a three-headed giant in the underworld, whom the queen would turn into a handsome prince. When this giant arrived, he would come through a hole in the floor; if Hadvor had plenty of burning pitch ready, she could pour it in.

The king returned. The queen's brother came, and Hadvor killed him by pouring the pitch on him. The queen found the body and laid a spell, so that it became a handsome prince, and Hadvor was unable to defend herself from any charges. The king agreed to let her punish Hadvor, but Olof warned her how to defend herself. The queen had her buried with the body. When the giant came back to life, he asked Hadvor to cut pieces from his legs to feed his dogs, which Hadvor refused until he told her how to find Hermod. Then he let her get on his shoulders to get out of the grave mound; he tried to grab her, but she wore her cloak loosely, and he got only that.

She made her way to the sea. In a dream, a woman told her that she was leaving her a rope to climb the cliffs, a thread to follow to find Hermod, and a belt to keep her from going faint with hunger. She found these when she woke. With them, she found a cave. Hermod came there in the evening and shook off his lion skin; Hadvor burned it. A witch with fifteen sons gave them a boat to get back, and warned them that the giant had become a whale to drown them, but they could call on her name for aid. When they got to sea, the whale did attack, but when they called on the witch it was attacked by another whale, plus fifteen smaller whales, and they got home. They found there the rat and the mouse, and Hermod killed them. They told her father the whole story. Her father married the two of them, and resigned his kingdom.

Olof married a nobleman."

The Hobyahs

"A man, woman, girl, and dog lived in a house made of hempstalks. The Hobyahs came for several nights, shouting "Hobyah! Hobyah! Hobyah! Tear down the hempstalks, eat up the old man and woman, and carry off the little girl!" For several nights, the dog barked, scaring them off, but the old man was angry at its barking and cut off its tail, then its legs, then its head. Then the Hobyahs tore down the house, ate the old man and woman, and carried off the girl in a bag. They hung up the bag at home and knocked it, shouting, "Look me!" They went to sleep, because they slept by daytime. A man heard her crying and took her home, putting his big dog in the sack. When the Hobyahs opened the sack, the dog ate them all."

The Tale of the Hoodie

"A farmer's three daughters are each wooed in turn by a hoodie crow. The older two repulse it because it is ugly, but the youngest accepts it, saying it is a pretty creature. After they marry, the crow asks whether she would rather have it be a crow by day and a man by night, or the other way around. She chooses a man by day, and during the day, he becomes a handsome man.

She has a son. One night, after music puts everyone to sleep, the baby is stolen. The next two years, it happens again, with two more babies. The hoodie crow takes her, with her sisters, to another house. He asks if she has forgotten anything. She has forgotten her coarse comb. The coach becomes a bundle of faggots, and her husband becomes a crow again. He flies off, but his wife chases him. Every night, she finds a house to stay in, in which a woman and a little boy live; the third night, the woman advises her that if the crow flies into her room in the night, she should catch him. She tries, but falls asleep. The crow drops a ring on her hand. It wakes her, but she is only able to grab one feather.

The woman tells her that the crow flew over the hill of poison and she will need horseshoes to follow him, but if she dresses as a man and goes to a smithy, she will learn how to make them. She does so and with the shoes, crosses the hill.

She arrives at a town to find that her husband is to marry a daughter of a great gentleman. A cook asks her to cook the wedding feast, so that he can see a race, and she agrees. She puts the ring and the feather in the broth. He finds them and demands to see the cook, and then declares he will marry her.

They go back and retrieve their three sons from the houses where she had stayed."
