Bez waved him silent without looking up. He was finally getting a focused reading on Ai, not a verbal one, but he wasn't too sure he wanted one with Ai just then, not as upset as he was. His swedh's mind was like a trap, twisting and turning inward upon itself. But they needed the reading to determine where he was and he had been doing things like this since before the "fall", it really wasn't all that hard. Normally he would be able to do it with only a half a thought, but he couldn't afford not to pay attention, otherwise he would get sucked in. It wasn't madness per se, at least it wasn't a form of madness he could identify with. He had touched Ai's mind once before when he had been caught up in the claws of insanity and the present state of his swedh's thoughts had nothing in common with the sinking depression that had marked Ai's slow spiral downward at that time. This was something new, a red hot angry sensation of entrapment... a true savage animalistic madness. Ai was angry at someone, most likely his kidnapper, but he had never touched a mind so full of twists, turns and dead ends as Ai's was just then. He dared not touch it fully, linking with him in this state was nigh on foolishness of the utmost design. Still the anger provided them with a fairly accurate compass and as loathed as he was to use it, Bez wasn't about to kick a gift horse in the mouth.

Looking up, he gazed off toward a mountainous ridge in the distance, a rim of rocky peaks that surrounded the lowest of Paradisio's planes. "He's over there... somewhere... most likely down within. I have to warn you, Kero... he's not exactly sane right now... not rational... he's angry... I've never seen him this angry... and I don't know what he'll do when we find him."

Standing up, he shouldered his great blade and nodded towards the mountains. "Shall we? I'd say fly, but that would make us rather visible and right now I'd rather not be found before we find him. Besides, we might miss something on the ground... a clue or something that would tell us who we are working with here."

Tam looked at Kero as he de-tuned his lute and sighed. He could tell by the faraway look in his eyes that he truly wasn't listening. His thoughts were wandering, looking backwards. Tonight was the night after all... twenty years... how quickly they had flown... how slowly they had crawled. Funny though, for all of the pain it had brought him, he wouldn't take a single moment back... well maybe one or two. He certainly hadn't enjoyed being kidnapped and mind-mazed... and he truly regretted the loss of their child. Their child... the memory of the love that had created him, the love he still carried deep in his heart, was the most precious thing he had at the moment, but the hell it had brought them was perhaps his worse nightmare.

Reaching into his pocket he fingered a small stoppered vial. Kero probably wouldn't need it. The elder Kero had assured him repeatedly when it was time, truly time, the ascension would take place vial or no vial... and Tam could tell it was time. It wasn't a matter of age, it was a maturity and grasp of who and what he was. Kero was ready, past ready. Only his tie to Tam was keeping him here. It was time to let go. But it was so hard to do so. He remembered the look in his eyes, after they got to the surface in Paradisio... the love and concern. Bez had worn a similar look as well. The two of them willing to risk everything to find him. Lord above, why... why was this so hard?

Picking up his lute, he slid it into it's carry case and brought his harp out of hiding. There was only one solution to this stalemate. He had to be the one to say good bye. In a voice that threatened to break he began to sing:

There are burdens that drag us down under
There are burdens, which lift us up high
But this burden left in my keeping
Was the one that opened my eyes.

Lonely and weary, needing to mend
Heartbroken, empty, and seeking
Walking the earth, knowing not what
When along came an offer that tugged at my heart…

Hearing his Sira singing, Kero slowly detached himself from the memories, seeing now the larger picture instead of the details he had lived. He and Bez had found Ai, oh yes. And so had they found her kidnapper.

Miku, another angel on the same caliber as Ai and Bezernia, was the one who had stolen her away.

All had seemed lost. Bez and Kero did not want to fight the angel, yet he refused to release Ai. But then, a miracle. Ao himself, the maker, had stepped in, solving all things in a classic deus ex machina. He had gently shown Ai and Kero how their child could herald great doom, and had offered to shelter him, for male it was, in Paradisio. Although reluctant at first, both Ai and Kero had had no choice but to agree.

The child now slept in a crystal egg, the egg Kero had dreamed of during his conception. Sheltered by Ai's love, and Kero's too, he would always know his parents loved him, though he might never know Kero was his father.

And now Tam's singing brought the young lion back down to Earth. And this...this was a song he had never heard. Was this how he had come to be?

Can you open your heart to another?
Can you love him and call him your son?
Can you hold him and teach him and show him the way?
Then return him to me when you’re done?

Tam looked up and saw Kero look at him. Flashing him sad smile, Tam quickly looked away. The song was to help him figure out how to ascend, but it was also a farewell. It told of how they had come together, but it also revealed something else... it revealed the depth of his heart, not only to Kerobian, but also the townsfolk. He had to get through it and leave.

Where would he go? He honestly had no idea. Tam knew he was no longer guardian material. That ill-fated kidnapping was probably the last time he would ever see so much as a blade of grass in Paradisio. Gabe thought otherwise. His brother swore he'd still be allowed to go back, just not quite so soon. He, himself, thought otherwise. Still there was a great deal of good he could do while he waited out his time on the mortal planes. Protecting the innocent, sheltering the unwary... learning how to live, standing on his own two feet... so much he had left to learn.... so much he had learned already. Funny how that was, one could live forever and never know how much they truly did not know.

As the song slowly wended its way into Kero's mind and heart, he began to see things. Disjointed images. Powerful memories. The visions of yesteryear and all the years gone before. Jarring and powerful, Then, suddenly, it appears bright and clear inside his brain, an image of himself standing before Tam. XII had remembered it wrong all along. Tam had been there, had accepted the duty before speaking to Lyssan. Kero had rejuved in his arms, hugging Tam close as his life ended, and began again.

I stared at its maker in sorrow.
Surely he knew my dismay.
How could I care for another?
When my own life was in disarray?

Tired eyes stared back at me in hunger
Tired eyes, he could no longer hide…
Tired eyes seeking solace and comfort
Tired eyes I dared not deny

Tam allowed his thoughts to wander. How long had he watched as Kero fought the need to rejuvenate, falling prey time and time again to a mis-cast spell that forced him into a much younger, often times infantile, version of himself with each full moon? How many times had he assumed that form himself to give him company and watch over him? Then the spell had warped so badly, locking him into the body of a child, awake and aware of his fate only during the late night hours. Tam had remained an adult then. Someone had to look out for him after all. His foster mother had summoned him to the task, but the truth was, he was already on his way. His friend, Kerobian had had need of him, how could he stay away?

And now Kero finally stirred, the memories of that horrible time beginning to return to him. How he had tried his hardest to fight the spells, how he had devised technique after technique to defeat the moon's power over him in his previous life. And now he truly believed. It had never truly jarred with him who he really was. Now it did. Now he felt the power, looming all around him. He felt the great responsibility settle on his shoulders...and he stood up then. He shouldered the burden...not without fear, not without pain.

But he shouldered it all the same, as his ascension began. nothing was visible yet, but as Tam sang and the memories returned, it would soon be clear that a Voidmaster once more wore the Cloak of the Night.

Tam felt the gathering of power and sighed internally. Twenty years had gone by so quickly.

Now a friend to me is precious
And this friend was precious indeed
For this friend had tugged at my heartstrings
No more loyal a friend than he…

So I nodded and held my arms to him
Gathering him close and then
In my arms laid something more precious
Than gold or marvelous gem

More precious indeed... he had found purpose and his life had taken on new meaning with this task. No longer did he merely channel excess emotion to the pool of creation, he understood fully now what he did... what the emotions were... the wines of life, some bitter, some sweet... and he regretted his duties directives. True the painful periods in his life hurt, but they were his painful periods. And the love he had felt from both Bez and Kerobian were something he truly had no desire to share. Perhaps he was selfish, perhaps it was better for him not to have experienced them... but he had and he didn't want to go back to the way things were. Was it wrong for him to feel that way? Was it wrong to want to truly experience life to it's fullest?

Now, the sadness felt by Kero made itself known, slightly. The Voidmaster sighed, his tears welling in his eyes. How he wanted to remain who he was, the innocent little cub, studying magic with Mica and Shar, seeking out a mate properly...but too much had happened. He had fathered a child with an angel, and seen that angel rescued from the grip of Heaven, which for Ai had been a personal Hell. Now, he had to take up the mantle...now, he would be Kerobian vules-Noctuslain. But what did it mean?

Listening to Tam, Kero relived the moment of rejuvenation, which Tam had slightly embellished...but he also remembered when Tam finally agreed to take him in. How long ago that had been, how many years had flown by. Twenty years, a blink of an eye to a Voidmage. Yet in these twenty years, he had grown from cub to lion to Mage.

Feeling the snap of cloth in his ears, Kero reached up, gently grabbing for the sheet of star-speckled black silk he knew was waiting. Wrapping it around himself, to the amazement of the people who could see him. He gently got off his stool, and stood in the aisle of the inn, listening to Tam as he began to sing once more.

It was over. Tam felt the change snap into place. Refusing to lift his eyes, he continued to sing, knowing Kero's acceptance had triggered the change at last.

For a child he had gifted unto me
A child as dark as the sky
A child whose mind was a wonder
A child with emerald green eyes

Yet this child to me was more precious
Than any a child could be
For within his heart burned that of another
The one who bequeathed him to me.

He couldn't look... couldn't raise his eyes. Still Tam knew it was Kerobian there before him, his Keronbian. He could feel it deep in his bones as well as across the deep running psychic link they had somehow managed to nurture between them. That much was a welcomed relief. Hopian had assured him repeatedly that the Kero he raised and loved so deeply would be the Kero that remained in charge, that the other incarnations would simply be something he could draw on if necessary. But even though he was grateful for that small blessing, it was time to finish this... time for him to go... Just one more tiny verse, and he was out of there. On the run again, but this time he wasn't running to avoid making a commitment... this time he was freeing Kero to accept the ones he had.

Smiling now, having shouldered his responsibility, Kero stood up, blurring into the familiar elven form he so loved. Tentacles once again hidden beneath a star spangled cloak, Kero moved to into the aisle, prompting murmurs from the townsfolk who saw him.

"Who is that?"

"When'd he come in?"

"What is he?"

"Is that..."

"It can't be..."

"He was just right here..."

"I think it is..."

Ignoring them all, Kero made his way to Tam, sitting down before him, kneeling Japanese style as he waited for his sira to finish the final verse. Now he knew what he needed to do. His sira needed to go home, and not to run either. It was time for Kero to give back the security Talesian Firemane had given him.

And so he sat, and waited, listening as Tam began to wind down. When he showed signs of beginning the last verse, Kero stood, moving up to Tam and placing his hands underneaths the bards chin, forcing Tam to look into his hypnotic eyes, eyes that just now were simply filled with a love that would last through the ages.

Kero still loved him very much...but micxed into that love was the iron duty Tam had always associated with his former friend. Tam had given a greater gift than serenity, or love, or even a child to Kerobian. He had given him, finally, the power to balance the real world with his duties within the endless Void.

And so the Voidmaster looked the Angel of Love in the Ai, smiling at him as he opened his mouth to sing the final verse together with his beloved Sira.

Final verse. And then he'd go. An explanation of sorts to those who had befriended them on the way. They deserved to know, if only a little, what they had helped to bring about. He would not have been able to do it on his own. Without Mica's and Shar's support and help over the last few years, he would have fallen apart at the seams, and for Kero that would not have been a good thing. They hadn't been happy with him, but oddly enough they had understood and they had done all they could to help heal his broken psyche. Hopian had helped as well, far more than the Opal child thought he had. Perhaps he would go to the Pride Lands and visit,... well it wouldn't be a long visit. His ability to handle heat was shot it seemed. His merger with the snow lion side of his nature had seen to that. Still he could stop by and say hello one evening.

Steeling himself, he blinked back a flood of silvery tears, then froze in place as long thin fingers caught him beneath the chin. Familiar fingers. A touch he had not felt for twenty years.

Looking up he swallowed hard, trying desperately to smile. Kero smiled at him and with a slight nod opened his mouth to sing... it was time to get this show on the road.

Now, my friend, you know of my story
Of how I came to be
One who walked through your journey,
Confused and bothered, but free.

As the words poured forth, irridescent white hairs began to sprout on his hands and his voice deepened, until a large white winged lioness sat before the fire, head hung sheepishly. "I... I will never forget you...." she whispered softly nuzzling the mage's hand.

"Nor have you need to, Sira. I will always be with you, and you with me." Kero smiles, gently getting down to nuzzle her once more. "You know I do not leave those I love. Should you ever feel alone, or need a place to stay, my doors are always open to you. I may be the Voidmaster, but I am still your little cub. And I will always love you."

Turning aside, Kero wrapped the white lioness in a hug, his cloak settling over his body quite comfortably as he did so.

"Now, we know each other, better than ever we thought we would. But I am still me, and you are still you. I just have a job to do now, that's all. I'm still your mischievous cub...so don't be surprised if you find your sheet music missing or your bowl laced with pepper from time to time." Kero laughed, kissing her gently on the head.

"Time for you to go home, dulcha." said Ai quietly looking across the room at the astonished faces. "But mayhaps you should stay a bit and help these fine people know the truth of you..."

Ai smiled weakly as Mica came forward with a slight bow... not a subservient one, but one of greeting between equals... followed in turn by oddly enough Jon. The farmer wore a big grin and he nodded to Ai as he stepped forward.

"I was wondering when ye'd let the cat out of the bag." he quipped with a wink. "Ye may have thought ye had us flummoxed, old girl. But an old farmer like me, we have a way of knowing... yer mannerisms as the bard and as the lion were simply too much alike. Besides, that bard mask of yers is far too much of a girlie girl ye know... if yer going to use it again... I suggest ye man him up."

Ai snorted softly. "Tam has been around longer than ye've been alive, Jon... heck, he's been around longer than this town has been standing. I think I can continue to pull it off, if need be."

The now wizened farmer chuckled and turned to Kerobian, which gave Ai the chance she needed. Inching away, now that the mage's attention was turned elsewhere she made for the door.

She was almost there when a soft spoken familiar voice caught her up short. Shar. Standing at the doorway, arms akimbo, she blocked the lioness' path with a small frown.

"Where will you go?"

Ai stopped and shook her head. "Here... there... everywhere... that he is not, I suppose. I still love him, Shar. I won't deny it. But he has a new life now and well... regardless of what he says, I'm not really in it."

Kneeling down the priestess held out her arms and hugged her tight. "Go with grace then... and may the maker watch over thee."

Ai nuzzled her once then dashed out the door, down the path and out from the town. It felt odd, not to be heading back to the cottage, odd not to have another to worry about anymore... but she would grow used to it, she knew. And in time, she'd be strong enough to face him once more.... just not yet.
