Hlal-son motions to a pair of chairs near the fire. "E'li claims you are dragon born... or were... ye don't look dragonic... nor smell it... yet something about you tells me he speaks the truth. I would hear your tale, if you do not mind relating it. There is a tale from ancient history, from a time long before my birthing... surely...." he pauses and shrugs apologetically. "Forgive me... I'm a bit of a historian, you see... The tales of our past, be they good or bad... need to be recorded ere they become lost in the mists of time... and then with naught to go on we are doomed to repeat our errors."

Why don't you tell me the tale...perhaps I'll know it.

Hlal-son sighs and bows his head... "There is a tale of a favored son who defies his father to take a mate from a differing clan... it is a common enough thing these days, but back then it was unheard of. Anyway, it is said that despite all odds they paired and raised a family but then evil winds blew across the land, claiming the mind of their eldest... who went on a murderous rampage. At the time the naysayers all claimed it was the sins of the parents that drove the child to such evils, but later on it was found that he was but one of several claimed by that wind. The common belief now is that E'li's sister was stirring, fighting her bonds... no one knows for certain if this in indeed true... but it the accepted belief. This is a sad tale... and ancient tale... but this favored son was a distant kin of mine. So we keep the tale alive to remind us of the harm we did. Mayhaps had we not forced them off to the side, had we recognized the love they shared and rejoiced in their offspring, accepting them into the clan... none of this would have happened."

Does the tale give his name...the name of his eldest son, I mean? And how does it say he fell to evil...did he steal...rape...murder?

Hlal-son shakes his head. "Some tales have him a murderer, others say he went on a rampage. None are very clear, I'm afraid. Poor child... to have been so ill used. And his siblings as well. What we did to them was so very very wrong. It is said that the entire family disappeared shortly after that. Does this tale ring a bell, m"sirra?""

When he is a murderer...who did he murder? And the father...of which clan did he pair with? Gold? silver?

Hlal-son gives him a strange look. "Be at peace, m"sirra... surely this is but ancient history. Let me think... in the tales where he is a murderer he claims the lives of his siblings I believe... in a misguided belief that he is sparing them the pain he feels... when they speak of him as going on a rampage he goes mad and kills them all parents and siblings... driven to it by the taunts and brutalities of his playmates. I know not the clan of the father's mate. her name was expunged through history."

Then let me clear up a few things. The mother's name, which she passed down to one of her daughters, was Aurelia, and she was a gold. They had only one hybrid child, who was murdered by their eldest, a pure gold named Emnast, who only killed one other...his youngest sister, Stella. And he was actually hunting for power, though he later came to regret what he had done, and tried to fix things. His murdered brother's name was Luciel...and no, he was not the dragonling that Paladine has adopted.

Hlal-son closes his eyes in pain. "I will commit those names to paper ere we go off to fight. Never again will they be forgotten. And may their pain and loss teach us something of acceptance and understanding. Nevertheless... it still does not explain how or why you feel so familiar to me, M'sirra."

Can I have your word that what I am about to show you never goes further than this, elder?

How do you think I know that story, Elder Brother?
Note: Term of respect aimed at the leader of one's clan...at least in my novels...

Hlal-son flashes him a tight grin. "I suspect I already know the answer to that, though which of the two you are, eludes me at this time. E'li has hinted at your draconic heritage and Tamara speaks of your vast age... and they both say you have walked a difficult and straying path... You are one of the two younglings from my tale, are ye not?"
