Denbe frowned at all this- deeply.
Whatever it was, it had managed to spot and catch up to the Hiruma, unless he'd just stumbled across it, enough to give him trouble. But, it had only roughed up that single scout. It made him wonder if it might just have been hostile wildlife, or if he'd run into one or two of the mysterious inhabitants. Either way, there was no sign of blood to say he'd had to kill.
"Thank you. May your ancestors watch over your travels as well," the Hare said, bowing as the Hiruma excused themselves. He didn't like whatever was going unsaid- but it seemed to him that it wasn't life threatening at the least. He'd just have to keep his eyes open.

Thoughts rolled through the young Bayushi's mind about something that might not be an immediate danger and leaving the area immediately as he added his voice to the thanks given over to the Hiruma. Kojiro had planned on supplementing his rations today, but it may be best for them to high tail it before dangers reappeared. Kojiro would share his food with the Kaiu if necessary.

As one raised among secretive and mysterious people, Masuyo wasn't exactly the type to get suspicious; yet, even to her these Hiruma were acting... odd. It wasn't enough to confront them over, though, so instead she finished eating and walked over to Miyako with a smile.
"Good morning, Shosuro-san. Would you like to see something fun?" she began, though not waiting for a response before taking her hat bowl-up on the ground and pulling the Kawaru stones from her pack. "If our Hiruma friends are right, we might be able to find a better path and make things easier for you today."
With that she cast the stones into the hat and tried to read what the Togashi had taught her. Unfortunately, after moments of intense concentration, she had to bow her head in defeat at the nonsensical patterns before looking up at Miyako and frowning an apology.

As Masuyo attempted to read the Kawaru stones, though she gleaned no insight from it.
Kenichi's Awareness/Divination roll: 18
As Doi was speaking with the boys, Kenichi had actually made it over towards the girls without drawing attention to himself, overlooking the attempted reading.
"Looks like a journey of faces without masks to me," Kenichi would suddenly tell Miyako and Masuyo. He would lean one foot out towards the bowl, nudging it 60ยบ clockwise. Offering a brief smile, he would move to rejoin the others.
Hiruma Doi would wave to the group as the three Hiruma began to depart. Those of you with Perception 3 or Investigation 3 might overhear something as they depart about a "jade check", but that's pretty much it, before they are out of earshot.

Kojiro muttered to himself about Crabs, omens, and the like. It was not common knowledge, but Bayushi were extremely suspicious. For example, the number two was very auspicious as it represented the twins, Shiba-kami and Bayushi-kami. Since Bayushi-kami fell in the third trial, the number three likewise received such attention, although much of it negative.
Looking back in hindsight, Kojiro should have obeyed the regular rituals for such things in the tournament and left the Scorpion tent to Maru and Naizen. Ah well. So much for that.
"I'm going to go off and forage. Food seems to be a bigger issue than I had realized." Well....he did all he could to let Denbe and Kagae know what he thought might be ahead of them.....

The little Kitsuki looked upon this new insight with wide-eyed wonder. He was right, of course, but these sort of things took thought and experience to truly translate. She would have fun occupying herself with that, at least. In the meantime they would break down camp and wait for the intrepid hunter to return.
She set the pace for day 2 at a much more reasonable rate (roughly half of yesterday's speed), taking charge herself to ensure that the more fragile members drank, ate, and rested when needed. Still, using the fatigued Kaiu's map, they were looking to make pretty good time regardless. It gave her plenty of time to focus on the questions arising about this group; between the nearly conspicuous Hiruma and the Kawaru portent she decided it might be best to pay more attention than she usually cared to. 'Faces without masks...' seemed like a positive enough omen. Either relating to open emotions, especially when it came to love, or a general lack of deception. Maybe it just meant that they wouldn't get lost... or perhaps the fortunes were teasing her and sending a more literal message, in which case she needed to keep an eye on the Scorpions (was that ever not the case?)
Fubuki once again remained glued to Miyako, giving her the hungry eyes whenever she did not distract him with games. And yet... the Hare... always watching.

Kagae would retain his position at the back of the group while trying to guide the party via map consultation making sure they didn't drift off course. After a while of this Kagae would give up on this since he couldn't focus and slowly approach Masuyo (by slowly I mean REALLY slow mostly adjusting his path so that it eventually collided with hers).
"I'm not feeling too well... I don't suppose you have any herbs to help remedy fatigue sickness?" Asked Kagae sheepishly not making eye contact.

Miyako was a bit more determined today to not be such a drag on the group and tried to keep up a bit better today, although it was difficult on the tiny courtier. When she wasn't playing with Fubuki anyways.

Looking with some concern after the Hiruma after they left, Denbe looked to the other two bushi with concern- though Kojiro, perhaps just because of the mask, seemed oblivious to the conversation or the implications.
So when the Scorpion peeled off alone, Denbe stepped up beside the Crab and spoke quietly to him. "Keep everyone within eyesight of each other. We'll be back," and followed after Kojiro.
Picking through the wilderness for what sustenance he could find, he was very careful to always keep Kojiro within a glance.

Kojiro sighed exasperatedly. "Great. One little comment by a Hiruma you don't even know and your eyes are set towards us again. Did you not learn anything from that village?"
The samurai continued his foraging, although it seemed to be more and more fruitless the further the day went.

Denbe blinked, looking up from his foraging, "I hope I have not offended, Bayushi-san," gathering up what berries and onions, or the like, he could find as they kept up with the group's travels. He wasn't finding as much as he'd hoped, but it'd feed one person. And rather than eat it himself, he held onto that for now until he returned to the group and see who seemed the most in need of sustenance.
"But I think you mistake my intentions. I know very well none of us are a danger. If the Hiruma are concerned one of their number might have been replaced or tainted somehow, however, I think it is best we move in pairs and watch each other's backs. Best not to tempt the fortunes."
He stopped to profess, sifting his collection to make room for more, and looked straight at the other bushi- his hand was nowhere near his blade, for what comfort that was worth.

"Of course. There are many things that could happen out here. It pays to take precautions." Kojiro commented. "Now...where did you find those berries?" The poor Bayushi didn't seem to be having that much luck in finding things to eat.

Day 2 Results:
Masuyo would take the lead on the 2nd day, leading the way not only forward, but upward. The pace is slower than yesterday due to the climb, but Dragons know all the best ways to tackle mountains, and the rest of the party probably realizes that they wouldn't handle this as easily without her help!
Kojiro would spend most of his journey trying to find sources of food: Berries, nuts, and the like. Joke's on him though, as he finds food more and more scarce as the elevation of the mountains they travel increase.
Kagae found that he was dragging his feet due to the illness that was wracking his system. Despite his familiarity with the land, the travel proved too much for him, and he easily found himself at the back of the line, exhausted.
Miyako apparently wanted to prove herself, that, despite this being far outside the realm of a courtier's comfort zone, she would not be a burden. Her determination was so admirable, she probably didn't even realize the extent of her ability to keep up until the day was almost over, and she was only somewhat winded!
Denbe stayed close to Kojiro, suspicion getting the better of him. The fact that Kojiro kept veering off to look for supplies and kept coming back empty handed was suspicious in of itself - especially when Denbe found these sweet berries to snack on, that he was fairly confident that they weren't poisonous. Perhaps Kojiro overlooked them BECAUSE they weren't poisonous? That sounds like a Scorpion thing to do...
The group travels 16 miles, less than half the distance of the day before. A total of 55 miles have been covered so far!
Everyone only needs to eat 1 days' worth of rations for today.
Kagae needs to give me a TN 10 Stamina roll to overcome his minor illness. He gets a free raise if he doesn't keep watch tonight.
Everyone who doesn't eat today, give me a TN 5 Stamina roll to avoid getting sick. There are no penalties/higher TNs to this roll, since everyone consumed food yesterday.
Denbe recovers enough food for 1 person, so he gets to delegate who benefits from the food for the day.
Also, I added Navigation as one of the skills used in this skill challenge. See page 16 for details! And ignore the fact that the coding mysteriously tweaks out partway down!

Event of the day, at the 50 mile mark:
As the day grew into the late afternoon, the five samurai would find themselves in a much higher, much cooler elevation. The sun was still shining brightly and kept them warm, but the cool mountain air made summer in the south SO much more bearable. It promised of a chillier night, but the travels were easier during the day nonetheless.
But soon, they reached a large canyon with a natural rock bridge over it. Down below would be an area Kagae would know as Kaiu Roka, or the Carpenter Pass.
Down below would be a small group of people with horses - Masuyo's Notice roll from before would allow her to identify them as Unicorn. It was unclear immediately, however, if they were simply passing through leisurely, or poking around.
