Ok. There's this guy I know. He owns this belt with an NES controller on it. It is The Championship Belt. Some kid in Germany made it, and won it in a large SSBM tourney. Then he came to our town as an exchange student and lost The Belt to someone else. Then, eventually, the kid I know won The Belt.

So, I challenged him to a match for The Belt. He was Ness, his best character, and I was Samus, my best character. The level: Battlefield. Items: On. I can't remember the exact number of stock, but I believe it was at least five.

Now, before my match, someone else had challenged him for the belt. It was the same conditions as my fight, they were even using Samus as well, and they only managed to get the kid with The Belt down to two or three stock.

So I go up. And this match was epic. I think I was the first kid to get him to really sweat in a long time, and I'm even a girl so it makes it seem all the more impressive....all these guys losing to this kid, and some girl comes along and gives him a run for his money.

So we're going back and forth. He KOs me, I KO him. It's close. REAL CLOSE. Eventually, we're both down to 1 stock and I believe we both had a decent amount of damage. Somehow, he beat me.
I think I gave him the first real challenge he's had in a long time.

So yeah, that's my closest match. And it just goes to prove: Real Smashers play with items on.

Lol, I have one of those belts :].

Oh and, play w/ items off

...Them???

You mean someone who can play the game without handicaps on? And well?

Then yes, I am one of THEM.

them, as in, you take the game very seriously. which was not its original intention. its intended to be random wacky fun, but thats why you consider items a handi cap. you'll grow out of it.

Who are you to say that Smash was not created with the intention that there would be a competitive scene for it? You're not Sakurai, you're not on the development team. Don't make things up as you see fit.

No, we won't "grow out of it" because we take the game seriously. Items are indeed a handicap, it's not an accurate reflection of skill.

Sio is right.

Items are a handicap because you lack the skill to go into a match "unarmed" as it were, because you need to rely upon your precious 'pokeballs' and 'super scopes'. Because without them, you are left to your wits. Your actual SKILL as a player. Which is quite clear, that your skill is left to how well you can run and grab items. And then throw that item.

Man, I wish that some of these guildies lived around chicago. I'd love to show them a thing or two.

Thing is, I'm not being hypocritical because it's a widely-accepted fact. Items are a handicap, since a player could be losing horribly and somehow get a Pokeball to turn the tables. That's not skill, that's just luck.

EDIT: One more thing. Why the hell would Nintendo intentionally risk reducing the number of sales for Melee by not appealing to the competitive crowd? That's not good business.

ok, this is just crazy talk. you are severely over estimating the size of the competitive crowd. its really like a drop in an ocean. for every person you meet at a tournament, there are 50 other people who own the game who dont even know tournaments exist. hell, i bet a few of those still havent unlocked everything, even six years later.

look, fellas. I know how you feel. I just got back from a tournament, played some good people, got my a** handed to me. yes, they dont use items. yes, they take the game seriously ( theres a lot of bad blood due to trash talking ) . but these guys would seriously laugh at the things you two are saying.

items are turned off at tournaments not so much because they are handicaps, but more because they obstruct the gameplay.

but it doesnt matter. the really good players could care less if items are on or off. to put it frankly, if you play with items and lose, and use that as an excuse, you probably arent that good. i should know, i do it all the time against Bo-Bo ( my best friend - awesome ganon. seriously, our friendship was built on this game )

edit: just realized the thread title is " closet matches you've had " xd xd xd

Why would they laugh?? They'd probably agree with us if they knew what they were doing (I.e. advanced tourney play).

Where, dare I ask, was this tourney held?

oh, these guys would laugh at anything, but theyre especially big on making fun of dudes behind their back ( all in good fun? i hope? ) theyd laugh because of the way you're acting. youre kinda snooty mrgreen mrgreen mrgreen mrgreen mrgreen but theres still hope: when you go to a tournament, and you lose to a guy you've never seen before - do you shake hands with him/her afterwards?

tourney was down here in b'ville, south texas ( blah blah texas players suck, etc, etc ) these guys - not quite good enough to beat the california crowd, not quite good enough to beat the top south texas player ( caveman - who ive had the misfortune of playing - twice gonk ) but better than you and me, that i can assure you.

sounds like you met him?

caveman is awesome, i think he's good with everyone, but I've never seen him play dr.mario. when i played him, he used samus, fox, and i asked if we could play link dittoes and he kicked my a**. he is really a cool guy. real calm and mellow too, moreso than me even.

but whenever he plays someone on his level i think he goes fox. yeah, i think he and the guy from crystal city go fox/falco in doubles.

come on, man. can you honestly say that this

dont sound a little snooty to you in the least bit?
PostPosted: Mon Jun 04, 2007 2:20 pm

Snooty wouldn't be my first thought.

Haven't met Caveman; I just know he plays Doc (last I checked).

I haven't really met any pros, per se. Some good locals; i.e Cunning Kitsune, TRE1, and I think Eddie lives out here (chicago). The one guy I run into a lot is Captain Awesome. Good Ganon. Getting close to beating him too. wink

I apologize if I sound snooty, but that isn't my intent.

xd you're alright with me Tiger. if i may.

the moral of the day: its fun to call people noobs and stuff, but once you start looking down on someone less experienced - you need to realize that you have to get off that high horse - lest you want to become one of them
