Well, I don't really know why so many teenagers are depressed, and I am a teenager (13). It probably (as others have said) has to do with pressure, school and home life. And hormones.

Maybe also the emo subculture. They believe it is cool to be depressed, or to appear to be so. I don't understand it.

I think that the emo subculture makes people think teenagers are more depressed, when really most are not any more depressed than they used to be.

.. heck why not.. just blame it on the emos.......
I have emo friends that are happier than me most of the times (not using drugs)
depression is just the "being all alone" feeling, and people who experience depression are usually those who don't get much attention do to their way of life, style or family issues
so don't blame the emos. or i'll start accusing you of racism stressed

Okay. That was the most immature statement I've ever heard from you. And to think I was starting to believe you were a good debater ... What I'm saying is that emos stick out. So those who aren't teenagers might not realize what's going on, or how many of us actually are emo. They're mind set starts to work like this "Wow, teenagers are awfully depressed these days."

I don't think it's the Emo's fault, can't blame them...they choose to be that way.
Most teens don't choose to be depress, they just are...

There's a big line between being actually, clinically depressed and just acting depressed. A lot of teens focus on a great deal of things they see as wrong pr sad with the world, with their lives, and with popular culture, and use it as an excuse to act accordingly. When they start doing this long enough, it starts to lead into actual depression as it impresses onto the subconscious. One could also make the argument that they're simply acting the part, and aren't really depressed, but get their parents to see psychiatrists and so forth, so they can get the label of being clinically depressed.
Most people have absolutely nothing to be depressed about, but feel otherwise, due to a number of factors, including movies, friends, pop culture, news broadcasts, television, and lots of other things. My theory is that they see actors on screen with drama and, wanting to emulate them, add drama to their own lives, if only to use it as a means to escape from routine or "what everyone else goes through." This, of course, is simply the product of immature thinking, and they will mostly likely get over it when they either get into college or the working world. If they don't get over it, then they'll probably end up failing at life and I have no sympathy for them.

Well ... I'm glad you agree that it was a bad thing to say. To the question: Yeah. They're different. Even people who are teenagers categorize emos as deppressed. Because of the culture that they tie to them.

Lightedheaven I've heard that there is some kind of chemical reaction that occurs in the brain that causes people to become depressed. i agree. i have heard that the chemicals in the brain which prompt strong overpowering feelings are strongest in the teen years. and the person develops physical and psychological ways of coping with that but it takes years (meanwhile the chemicals are ebbing too) i am no longer a teen and i'm so glad. i proved to myself and everybody else that i could not handle what went on inside my head.

Teenagers are actually depressed because the front part of the brain, the hypothalmus is not developed yet. Part of it may be chemical and hormonal but we also do not have that part that overides such suicidal impulses. Also, many adults are depressed, but they deal with it better, or are often better at hiding it, developing coping strategies. Teenagers don't have the subleties that adults do. At least, none of my friends do... (sorry, I kind of sound like a text book here...)

I'm perpetually smiling and I think people think there's somthing wrong with me because I'm a happy teenager... I have my ups and downs, but I think I think some teenagers are better at handling them than others. Those that can't handle them so well are emos. (And I suppose goths, although I knew a really perky goth once...)
