Hiya

I have noticed that there is a number of members here who follow Kemetic Orthodox.

Kemetic Orthodox is the modern day religion which was followed by the Ancient Egyptains 4-2,000 years ago but is now followed by people today. We worship this religion today by giving offerings to the Gods (Anubis, Osiris, Horus, Ptah etc) with not just food but modern day technology (I hear that the God of writing likes our notepads and pens whee ).

I would follow this religion but my Dad is anti-religious and Maat would not want me to turn my back to my family so I am waiting until I leave home before I take this faith seriously.

So who here follows this religion? If you do then how long have you worshipped it and what inspired you to do so?

There are two stickies in which provide information on this. One Sticky is links all dedicated to Kemetic Orthodox research and a Sticky I have done has one link (The Netjer House).

I practice this religion along with wicca, and shamanism (and my own few, very nice people) so you can call me an eclectic pagan... smile
I have studied this since I was six (Kemetic Orthodox, Wicca/Witchcraft, Shamanism) and have met my own gods/goddesses on my way to adding it all together (if any of that made sense, then yay!)

I secretly follow it, even though my parents don't exactly want me to. Once I asked if they minded if I followed Kemetic Orphodoxy (or is it Orthodoxy?) Anyway, they said not to do stuff because someone told me to stare stare stare ... So I don't mention it now. But I really think that is a great religion! biggrin

nah, I don't follow it. I follow Jesus (or God, whatever you wanna call Him) and I don't think it's wrong, and I ain't ashamed.

I basically learned all my beliefs from Kemetic Orthodoxy, but I don't think I'd ever become a full member of the religion. Right now I'm just aiming for Divined Remetj. I just don't feel like I fit in with the KO community, and I know that's very important to the group. What I really want to do is be a Kemetic Reconstructionist, and attend a Unitarian Universalist church (which I'll be able to do when I move away to college next year).

I understand how you feel. Both my mother and stepfather know about my conversion to the faith. My mother is supportive, but my stepfather calls my beliefs as being all based on fantasy. He's one of those hypocritical christians. He thinks only Christ-based faiths are real and the one true paths, yet he doesn't go through a day without cussing at Christ for one thing or another >.> I am proud to be a Shemsu and even prouder to have Sekhmet-Hethert as my beloved Mother.

I've been considering taking the beginner KO classes. How much does meditation play into the lessons? Because I'm not sure that I meditate well enough to have a connection with the Netjer during my meditation...
Does anyone have suggestions on improving meditation? Other than practice, of course.

I'm glad you feel that way. I don't think anyone should be ashamed of what they believe in. 3nodding

The KO beginner's class doesn't require any real meditating or anything. It's just them explaining a lot of how things work within the house and getting you familiar with the basic beliefs and gives lots of suggestions for shrines/prayer/et cetera along with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. If you want to take time to get better at meditation before trying to use it as a way to connect to Netjer then by all means take your time. Personally I can't focus on anything for very long lol so meditation is out of the question, but I've never had any problems connecting with Netjer. : )

Ubat's right- taking the Beginner's Course just tells you about the group itself, where they come from, what they believe, what they do, etc. I'd recommend to anyone in the community to take as many of these courses in as many different temples as they possibly can... but then, that's me speaking. Heh. I find this sort of thing very interesting- and I find it helpful to understand the philosophy and social organizations with which the people I meet are associated. I, for one, took the Beginner's Course and did not join the temple- just opted to stay as a friend of the faith: a Remetj. I'm glad both that I took the class, and that I did not opt for a deeper level of membership, because I later found a temple with a much more traditional approach to the religion which was more in tune with the values I'd come to appreciate through my studies.

I think one of the most difficult things about the class is resisting the urge to jump in with two feet after its over, lol. Even Hemet (the leader of the House of Netjer) recommends that people wait a while, give it some deep thoughts and a cool-down period first... but few do. It's just so exciting- you get swept up in the community, the rush of learning, the fresh insights, and the devotion of the temple members. And of course most people are very excited to have their divinations done and their new names given- you don't have to do these things after the class is over, but by the time the class is over you kind of want to, lol! Even I wavered a bit, at first.

But nothing is coerced, and I've found that they're good people- just a different approach to the religion from what I sought. And they have contributed many services to the community- from our first Kemetic charity to the Tawy House retreat building- and their ritual forms have influenced several of the other major temple groups online.

I just realized that I didn't really answer your question! sweatdrop

The majority of the class involves reading, discussion, and quizzes from which you will benefit no matter how skilled or unskilled you are in meditation. They will teach you a basic ritual with which to commune with the gods, and there is time in that ritual which is set aside for meditation if that is how you connect with Them- you can also do other things if you are more comfortable using other methods, or if you just feel like doing something else. I was given one homework assignment during my class which required a meditative state- but it was for the benefit of my own experience only and I don't remember ever being forced to share it with the rest of the class. I think people were given the option to comment on it if they wanted to do so, and we may have emailed our experiences or concerns to our teachers privately. But that was pretty much it. The Beginner's Class really isn't a mystical initiatory experience- it's just a brief introduction to what Kemetic Orthodoxy is and does.

The ability to enter a meditative/trance state and encounter the gods directly is a question on the minds of many in the community. I wrote a little about it in my personal journal, if you're interested. The link is here:

Hope that helps!

For circumstances that are far beyond my control, I am not currently a mamber of the House, but I am eager to join it as soon as I possibly can. Deep down, this religion feel right to me, despite the fact that it's not "mainstream".

Wow, this is late but I didn't really pay much attention to it beforehand. I just wanted to point out a bit of a misunderstanding. "Kemetic Orthodoxy" is not the term for the modern worship of the ancient Egyptian gods- it is a specific approach to that kind of spirituality. Kind of like all Wiccans are Pagans but not all Pagans are Wiccans- all Kemetic Orthodox are Kemetic, but not all Kemetics are Kemetic Orthodox. So when you're answering this thread, what Rennie is actually asking is are you a member of the House of Netjer, and do you subscribe to their views of the religion, which is not a reconstructionist approach to the religion but rather a revivalist approach. That means that they do not place priority on the traditions as they were practiced in ancient Egyptian religion, but rather the religion as it was is interwoven with specific modern innovations which their spiritual leader believes will make the religion more appropriate for modern people. Kemetic Orthodoxy has a specific mixture of ancient and modern which makes it its own path, hence the term "orthodoxy;" it is orthodox to its own set of doctrines and beliefs.

WebenBanu: Ha, I wrote that ages ago, I had not long discovered it myself xd now I have almost finished the beginners class I have a totally different view on KO and other things I have said in this Guild, that is how dated and slow this place is, lol.
PostPosted: Thu Dec 25, 2008 11:40 pm

LOL, well I didn't realize myself when I went into the Beginner's Class that KO wasn't a reconstructionist approach. And discussing it with members on their boards, quite a few of them were convinced that it was recon as well, so it took a while to dispell that misconception from my mind. That's why I try so hard to help explain it to others, really- I hate being misled, but I understand that after a few people have been convinced of a mistaken assumption like that, it becomes a self-perpetuating feedback loop which can be really hard to stop! I'm sure that is not what Hemet wanted, so I doubt that she minds me pitching in here and there to help explain it.

Currently I am in the beginner's class with the Kemetic Orthodoxy. There is only one more class, I believe, and I am proud to say that I will become a Shemsu when the time comes. I feel as if I've finally come home. ^_^ Dua Netjer!! I was raised United Methodist, but it really wasn't for me. There were to many variables that didn't add up personally for me in Christianity. Although I will say, I do respect everyone else's religious paths. Eventually I'd like to become a Sau within the KO. Wish me luck!! heart
