my band teacher is a complete a** when it comes to solo. i hate to say this.. but i am one of the better flutes in my class. i know what im doing and how to fix things. its not the most expensive one. but i know my stuff and have a good tone. i can play solos well. i asked my BD if i could do the solo. so he said yes. i pacticed SO hard. its unbeliveable. then, the night of the concert, he says "oh, can gina do the solo instead?" and gina looks at him like... WHAT?!!?!?! and she says no. but she got to do it anyways. i was ready to beat my conducter down with the bassoon near me. omg. i was ticked. then whats great, i complained and he said "im sorry chels, i didnt know you felt that way about it. and i sai that "of course i feel 'that way!' about it. or else i woldnt have asked. and he said he would do more songs with solos. and he has. but automatically, he gives it to gina now. even though she screwed up on it during the concert. i hate my new BD. hes such a jerk. i miss mrs webster. she was my second mom.

We get to pick at my school, as long as my BD approves. And you can only do a solo if you have a private teacher.
This is my first year doing it, and I'm doing the following:
Solo- Bb Clarinet- Class B- Aria and Presto
Sax quartet- Tenor- Class B- Sailor's Hornpipe (I gotta practice that one more).
Clarinet choir- Bb Bass Clarinet- Class A (I think)- The Chrysanthemum

This year I'm doing a clarinet duet, and a flute/clarinet duet (a Franz Danzi piece) I'm really excited for S&E! I just need to practice more...

For anyone who cares...
I got a I on my solo, a I for the Clarinet choir, and a II for the Sax Quartet (whenever the Bari had the lead, she would drag like hell).

That's kinda wierd. Our BD lets us choose who we want to be in an ensemble with. But, I would say that whoever he/she puts you with, even if you don't like them, just do your part, learn to play your part and do your best. Basically, just grin and bear it.

I've gone to Solo/Ensemble for as long as I've been able to, and this year was the first year that my new highschool, the arts highschool, went to it. Well, our pianist dropped out on us after we got to sections! (or subsections, I always confuse myself on which one is second) I was so angry... Anyway, I performed 'Green Finch and Linnet Bird' as my solo, which is from the musical 'Sweeney Todd,' and I did a duet with a friend called 'Sound the Trumpet,' and I don't quite recall who it's by. We have always gotten to pick in the schools I went to.

I usually do the solo. 3nodding It doesn't seem very fair that you don't get to choose who you want to do your ensemble with; it is, after all, your time, not a direct representation of the school.

This year was my first year doing a solo. Ever. I've gone to S&E before, but I just did duets and stuff like that. So, doing my solo, I did pretty well. I beat the one guy who beat me in All-City, and I got first alternate, which got me to state. I got seventh at state, which was really surprising considering I knew that I was going to state only a week before.

If you hate them that much, don't do it. Do the solo. I did one, it's not very hard, it's quite easy after you practice it for a while. You might have your hands feel numb after it, but it will go away.

geez, been a while but I just got my computer fixed.....well the guys always ******** off but worked hard and we never even got to do the ensemble(we can't do solos w/o a private instructor b/c we practice during school) crying crying
you can't even imagine how mad I was. I tried hard to be civil to those guys and it was all for nothing!!! cry Well my BD said that we're [[hopefully]] doing it this year but we're going to be in the same groups....and it pisses me off again because I kow since we're doing the same music they won't even try to put forth the effort that they did last year. Just more to deal with and I'm not even gonna try to be civil this year. Too much work, I'll just ignore them.
I'm not sure when we're going to start. I think our Solo & Ensemble is in February or March
