He's an arrogant idiot who wants to take all the egyptian artefacts that were 'stolen' back to Egypt. Maybe he could start with categorizing the Cairo museum before he asks such things. Last year he treatened to my professor to shut down his excavations in El-Bersheh if our country didn't return a stela that was bought from the museum in the 70's (!) I don't think that's right. The artifacts are far better exhibitioned in Europe end America than in Egypt (I've seen the museum, it's horrible).
I also read an article about the CT-scan of tutankhamun: he was bragging about his famous hat and how he didn't get much sleep because he was so exited. I hardly read something about the CT-scan itself.. I really think they should find another person to do his job, because he makes Egyptologists look like idiots..

The Cairo museum does look a bit old but that's something I can't comment about just yet, but I doubt it would harm the artifacts inside.

With Tutankhamun, anybody would be excited about a new find. If I found Nefertiti's mummy (I don't think it has been found yet ...) I wouldn't be able to sleep for days! Basically you've put another piece of the puzzle together into understanding the Egyptians.

I think he does his job really well, ok he may boast now and then but alot of scientists, egyptologists etc do when they discover something new and get famous for it.

Technically alot of the Ancient Egyptian artifacts around the world in museums were originally stollen. Alot of items were sold in the Black Market (stollen by modern day tomb robbers) to people like the British and Americans (and French too) and then they sold them to the museums back home. I can understand why Dr Hawas wants them back in Egypt, but then again museums outside of Egypt will loose their Egyptian exibitions (sp? too early in the morning for me, lol).

I have seen sarcophaguses in the museum who wore off because all the tourists put their hands on it. You could hardly read the inscriptions. They keep the sarcophagus of Akhnaton outside. The gardeners put their material in it.. Most of the material is stocked in te basements where they can stay forever to rot away. And besides, not all the artefacts in the European and American collections are stolen. I've read about the Deir el-Bahri priest cache and how the supervisors of the museum donated the coffins to museums all around the world because they took to much place..

And yes, I don't like Zahi, but that's because he follows the popular streams of Egyptology. I once talked to Mark Lehner and he dislikes him too (but doesn't say it out loud because he can be kicked out of Egypt then..) The reason is because of that show that was on national Geographic a few years ago where they put a robot in one of the shafts of the great piramid. At the same time Zahi and Mark opened a tomb in the vicinity of the piramid. Zahi acted as a wildman: he opened the sarcophacus with a crowbar. Mark almost fainted when he saw that.. Next he claimed that the tomb was of one of the workmen that worked at the piramid: wrong! he tomb was dated 100 years after the finishing of the piramid..

So, I think he acts to popular in my eyes. Some may appreciate that, but I don't like it..

Ow my gosh! I thought he treated his artifacts with great care! Such a bad influence scream

I'm going to Cairo Museum next week (kind of ...) so I'll have to see for myself what it's like. I would weep if it is like what you've said gonk

I may just be pessimistic, but um... given that even the pyramids will waste away one day, I don't think we should obsess so much about keeping things so permanent. Only to the point where we can learn as much as possible from them.

The problem, of course, is that we're ALWAYS learning something knew. xd

Anyway, um... yeah, I actually like the guy. He's one of two major (LIVING) people I think of when I think "Egyptology."

Then again, I don't get out much, beyond the Discovery Channel and History Channel.

I've heard about him. He was the one who identified Hatshepsut's mummy right? I appreciate him for the many contributions he gave to the academic field, and how passionate he is about his work.

But really, there is something about him which makes my picture of him quite sour. His face has some arrogant streak in it. And his direct and open opposition to Joan Fletcher's allegations about the mummy of Nefertiti quite got into me. Well, I was not totally a believer of Fletcher's theory, but Dr. Hawass' publicly displayed repugnance was rather too much that it made me think he really had the intention of bringing the lady's carreer to a finish. I wish their council just privately interrogated the woman, et cetera, et cetera.

I think he's ok, but he is a bit grasping when it comes to credit for a job done. Whenever a tomb is opened it always seems to be him in the limelight. Never the archaeologists who opened them.

But I love it how he refuses to believe in the 'ancient curse' nonsense. He went into one tomb and suffered a heart-attack, but came up with a perfectly logical explanation for it -he was stressed.

Ah...I desperatly want his job. The Head Treasurer of Artifacts, I want that job so badly...I wonder if an American can have it though?

I really can't stand him. He finds EVERYTHING! I am studying to become an archaeologist, and I would LOVE to find my own egyptian mummie, but who is there everytime they tell us about a mummie they've found?? Zahi Hawass! scream crying

First time I heard about him was in GT in the 5th grade, where we were doin an egyptology unit *That's what got me into the whole thing* and read a weekly serial in the newspaper he wrote about his discoveries. Now anything with egyptology on it has Zahi Hawass too. I'd love to meet him- I wanna be an egyptologist or something like that in the near future. Seriously, when there's a show on Egypt on the Discovery channel, there he is and I get insanely excited cuz he's just that awesome! I can only wish to have as much knowledge as he does!! whee

His work is good, but his theories are bad...I was doing research and he critasized the Nubians because they were darker...He was saying how they were a whole different part of Egypt because they were darker....
