Jen the Quiet I personally hesitate to apply the word "vermin" to something as big as a cat. smile But I think I'd tend to group them with the bad guys. In Redwall, the mice's first thought is to fear the cat, not approach it as a potential ally. (But then again, Redwall is the book that sticks closest to the natural relationships between and among the animals as far as that goes. They fear the cat, the owl, and the snake because they'll EAT them, not because they'll enslave them.) But Martin runs out to go ask Boar for help. They don't fear badgers or otters (both large carnivores). Personally, I don't consider wildcats complete baddies. But that might just be because I'm a cat lover. heart

Mice wouldn't fear otters because otters eat fish and other waterlife. And badgers aren't bad because the aren't pests. Rats, weasels, and stoats eat grain, and foxes eat chickens. That still doesn't explain why mice are good...

...because they eat cheese?
I would say it's because they're so small, they connote timidity. Thus, a timid mouse who becomes a great leader and warrior makes a good hero for a children's book.

Hmm. I persoally love otters, but they ARE carnivores, as are moles and hedgies. And robins, who love thier candied chestnuts.
Wat a minute...

Yes, but moles and hedgehogs eat bugs, not mice.

Some rats are kind of cute. I'm just thinking of the "Jumbo Rats" (so-labeled) I saw in a pet store once. Geez, those things were almost as big as cats.

Yeah, NYC is pretty nasty, huh? XD I've never seen a rat outside before. Only little mice on rare occasion. Or when my outside cat kills one.

Haha. Well, I rarely see the subway rats. Staten Island doesn't have a subway, only a train. ("A train," as in ONE.)
My dad hasn't worked in the subway stations in a long time. He's in an office in the City now.
