Ryochan8 I have to disagree with you on that. I forgot who said it, but after I read it, things TOTALLY came into perspective for me. I shall now enlighten you: Richard is her ex-husband. When she was all happily in love with him, Anita was fawning over Richard, but lusting over Jean-Claude. Yes there was underlying tension between Richard and Anita, but that's there with all couples. I now look back at the AB series as a Mary-Sue version of LKH's life. Kind of a turn-off for the series, but the it doesn't kill it. Entirely. Anyway, if Richard was meant to be hated, he wouldn't have seemed like such a saint from CotD to KD. But in regard to the thread topic.....I think that old!Richard was a better relationship guy than Jean-Claude, but Jean-Claude was definately sexier. Even Anita admitted that, no matter how hot Richard was, Jean-Claude beat him hands down. End of rantage. sweatdrop Yeah, I see where you're coming from on that. Honestly, it's obvious that Richard was meant to be a huge stepstone for Anita's character, to help her progress as a person, and he was definitely the perfect husband that she could never have. His standards were always too high, he bears an insecurity that stands in the way of all logic, and he's a painfully idealistic person. The white-picket-fence routine would never work, and while Anita was practical enough to understand and come to terms with that, Richard couldn't. He was later protrayed as a lost man in denial of a love that would never work - purely because Anita and Richard were far too much the same people. The reason I said he was designed to be hated was mainly because of the way Anita acted - he was the seductive, prince in shining armour, and the reader, though seeing where she's coming from, is generally supposed to follow her practicality. As a result, we're seeing the logical side while both of them are dancing around the fact that they could never work. Also, while we came to enjoy Anita's anger, Richard was the ugly mirror: he was angry and stubborn all the same, but it clashed with Anita, and by that time we were practically trained to follow her point of view. Therefore, while they're playing the love-hate game, we, the readers, shake our heads in dismay, and hurt when she hurts. Your words are exactly right; they're ex-marriage, and in that mode of I-hate-you-but-the-love-won't-go-away.
Belle M., I completely agree. xD I often felt like yelling that she was being foolish. Jean-Claude accepted her for what she was, and though he was often sketchy, it was easy to see he really loved her~. x3 Richard's been a mess since Anita put her foot down, and now he's merely a thorn in her side. Seems we know best, as usual. xD

In which book did it ever say Richard and Anita were husband and wife? They were ENGAGED. Not MARRIED. There is a difference there.. stare *end of the ranting part*
*down to opinion* Depends on what you're interested in. Pain/temper/anger is attracting to you? Then Richard wins. Richard's an a** and a bloody emo for a werewolf. Pathetic but that's about the only way I can describe him. whee
Jean-Claude though has to be what every girl's wetdreams are about! He's got the charm, the looks, the mysterious aura you can say, the french thing going on *never been much a of french lover*....you get the point.
Honestly: I love both with their appearances. Jean-Claude's the one everyone's after. Richard on the otherhand has this rouged, earthy feel about him with his looks. He does have personality but it's truly seen when in the very first books...Now he's an emo werewolf... confused

I hate Richard. He's a wussy, and too sensitive for my tastes. Jean Claude? Hecks yeah. He's effin' hot, yo. Plus the way LKH describes him... Jeez, I wish he were real. xD

Into Jean-claudes arms. Richard is an a*****e, i am sorry. he has too many emotional pinups as it is. she already has the entire leopards*forgot what they called themselves* to worry about includingMicah and nathaniel, and Damian. she ahs enough on her plate, richard complecates things and makes her life look dirty and horrible, when he is no peach himself.. i prefer the vamps, they are simple and clean about things.

Guys, guys. It's an analogy. -_- We know they weren't literally married, it's just that's what their relationship is like. An ex-married couple. I've read the series, I know that they were engaged. >_o

V.i.r.a.g.o Guys, guys. It's an analogy. -_- We know they weren't literally married, it's just that's what their relationship is like. An ex-married couple. I've read the series, I know that they were engaged. >_o Thanks, I couldn't have said it better myself. When I was writing that, I actually meant to type out that since LKH wrote herself as Anita, that her ex-husband was Richard. However, after you wrote the ex-husband analogy, that made sense as well. Sorry for the mix-up. sweatdrop Anyway, back onto the topic of Richard versus Jean-Claude. I actually feel kind of bad for Richard's fan base now. In the beginning he was amazing, with intelligence, looks, and the whole commitment package (before he became insecure, that is). However, even after LKH screwed over his boy scout-ish-ness in Burnt Offerings, and in every book after that, she couldn't even leave him his physical attractiveness (a.k.a. the haircut of doom in Cerulean Sins). Now, in any competition between new!Richard and Jean-Claude, Jean-Claude wins. But I still think that Jason beats them both hands down. blaugh

Exactly! Jason is immune to Anita's phermones! That alone should get him an award or medal of some sort.

Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, both work out. xD
Yeah, I think the fanbase that existed is probably unhappy now. >__> He was okay at the beginning, but now he just comes off as an a**, and Jean-Claude does win.
Of course, I'm not complaining. Richard always got on my nerves. xD

Nah, I think the fanbase is still going strong. They're the people that comprise the majority behind the "Anita ish teh biggest slut lolomfg!!1" banner.
Not that I'm defending her of couse.
But looking back, yeah, he definately needed to grow some balls. He was a wee bit wimpy for an alpha werewolf.
