I'm definitely in the camp that says it's easiest just to stick with your biological gender. I've tried to play male characters in other costuming ventures outside the SCA and discovered that I'm a little to... er... well-endowed to really make it believable. So my typical garb is skirt and t-tunic or gown.

On the rapier field is a different story, though. No skirt for me there. It's bloomers and a surcoat, for sure.

My Baroness wears a skirt on the rapier field, though, as does a countess who lives in our group. They're definitely some of the best dressed ladies on the field at war! Just last night, Her Excellency was telling us a great story about wearing her fighting garb to the field. She had already prepared for the field before she had even left her camp and was ready to go as soon as she got there. Then, at one point, another lady walked by and asked her if she was fighting. When she answered in the affirmative, the lady told her she needed to get into her armor quick because the fighting was going to start soon. When Her Excellency told the lady that she was wearing her armor already, the lady just kinda gawped.

Evidently, there's going to be a class at Knowne World Academy of the Rapier about "Garb = Armor." I really hope I can go to it. smile

Sir_Catherine
My personal preference is for people to stick with their biological gender when they choose a SCAdian persona. Key exception being women who want to fight, as 1) I understand it's a pain to fight in dresses and 2) women wouldn't have fought in the true middle ages (generaly!) so why force them to do so in true garb for women of the middle ages?
On the other hand, I wont judge or say anything to someone who is cross dressing. My two best girl friends refuse to wear dresses whether or not they are fighting, though they both have a female persona so it's more a matter of historical inacuracy than gender bending. Although one is looking into, I think it is, Mongolian attire so she can wear pants and be period.
As a side note, I understand kilts are period for men and have seen several men who wear one very well.

Alyna has assured me that I look quite good in a kilt. cool Maybe if everyone asks nicely enough, I'll wear one to Boar's Head.

Pictures please if you do? I highly doubt I'll make it to Boar's Head.

My persona dresses as a man.

I believe there are a few accounts from the crusades that involve the locals going through the battlefield after the fighting is done and discovering women cross dressing so as to be able to participate.

Personally, I have a male persona and am biologically female. However, more often than not I get mistaken for a teenage boy when I don't make the mistake of opening my mouth.

I dunno about actual medieval laws, though I'm sure it wasn't really approved, but I don't think its a problem at events. I know a nice little oriental fellow who is actually a white woman.
