Didn't see the episode but it sounds like I would've turned it off in disgust. I can't stand people who have no respect for a different culture. Such as the person writing the article you linked.

Well...this and many other similar articles prove that America isn't very cultured.

xd

Still I have to admit, it was kinda funny, yet embarrassing to read. I wish the author of that article wasn't trying to be all jokey.

(update)
I don't watch the show since I've been tired of these "reality tv series" but my mom tried to drag me to watch it...it was pretty interesting. I remembered watching this one episode where the girls go to Thailand and take shoots above the people selling goods at the Floating Market (I've been there before). They were supposed to be dressed up as mermaids, but I thought that they shouldn't expose themselves like that. There were a lot of elderly women there and they don't like it when other (young) women expose themselves like that in public. It was disrespectful but they did it anyway. *le sigh* If my grandma saw me doing that, she would have killed my mom.

Those models can be really close minded and well...dumb.
Why can't they have pretty cultured girls?
Is it too much too ask to not butcher a style?
It was pretty amusing tho. (>w<)

Yeah they are definitely being sarcastic.

Ugggh... those girls, EVERY SEASON mess things up and disrepect SOMEONE.

I saw that lolita ep, and I was pissed, yelling at my TV about "How stupid can you girls GET? ect." because the things they picked out weren't really lolita at all and it was just... appalling... whatever.

Those girls are wonderful at screwing up -- when they were doing the Taiwanese dance thing in whatever season that was, a simple instruction -- if your hand is above a certain level, it's considered arrogant, and of COURSE, every single girl being as insanely arrogant as she could be, had her hand above that level multiple times during the dance... I think maybe only one or two of the girls in the entire show have ever really appreciated where they were getting to travel to. Everyone else has just been "oooh, foreign shopping??" and just plain stupid...

So someone tell me why I tune into every ANTM marathon VH1 puts on. XDD

Hahaha!
That's actually my favorite tv show.
XDDD;

And I'm sure that's how most Americans would react to the Lolita style.
It's something they're not familiar with.
So, it's understandable.
But it was so horrible to listen to them butcher the Japanese language.

And not all of them were "rail thin".
All the same, there should be height restrictions when wearing Lolita outfits.
So since I'm born 6'3" and had no control over my genes that determine my height I should never be allowed to wear EGL? I think that's a little discriminatory. Almost like saying only Asians should wear it.

I cant speak for them but i may have an idea what they meant. if you look at how the EGL outfits are they really aren't made for people who are too tall tall is usualy a thing associated with "adult" while EGL and short are very "child" like ... it's not that tall people cant and shouldn't it's just that it dosent quite look 'right' or if a 'too-tall' person does it improperly they will look funny... If you don't properly cover yourself you stop looking like a Doll and start looking like a "Sexy Little Girl"...

I finally watched the ep. in its entirety though and I'm a Lolita fan but also a Harajuku fashion fan... so to see them shoping in thoes stores made me jelous and mad! They passed all of the good stuff and didn't apreciate what they'd gotten Especially the girl who said she'd grabbed the 'ugliest' stuff and put it together. That and the fact thatthey were just really mean about the street fashion and lolita... stare close mindedness is an ugly thing.
And one girl looked like she was wearing something ppl here in america wear and tryed to call it Japanese Street Fashion. stare

The "harajuku" shoot really pissed me off because they kept calling it "Harajuku-style" when it was VERY Anime-style. Hell! Even the examples of harajuku girls looked nothing like that yet they said that Harajuku girls dress like they were. The only time i felt right with it was when the blonde guy called it "Harajuku-Anime" style... because that's what it was... Harajuku styling if done up to the extreem in an Anime.

Well you also have to put into consideration. That the world was still not completly fumilliar with the Japanese fashion was they are today.
Yeah we know a ton about it because were fans and not knowing it--well, wouldnt make us fans right XD

still you are right, I remember watching that episode years ago and some of the comments made were pretty shallow but what do you expect. There will always be people like that unfortunatly -_-

This is really old news, however what can you say? These people have no appreciation for foreign cultures, and think it is cool to dress like a whore. Are you really going to be offended by what they think of Lolita?

True this is old, but then again, I barely ever watch TV. I wasn't too offended. I just thought it was funny. Plus it was nice to see Lolita's on American TV.

Same here. But I did make a confused look and asked others if Ann was just wearing a petticoat. Apparently, yes.

Yeah but if I wear it I tend to wear it properly, meaning maybe the same clothing but having it longer so the proportion of it works with my height. Most likely meaning I'd have to get clothes altered or made by someone I know who can sew. People who are average or a shorter height than normal can b***h about how the fashion industry sets unreasonable standards with tall skinny models and how there should be acceptance for everyone. Acceptance goes BOTH ways. If I can have someone make some proper Lolita clothes that work well with my body I have just as much right to wear them as someone who's 5'3".

Strawberry-Lolita
I don't think anyone here should feel insulted. No one on that show tried to look "Lolita" they just had to put together a creative Japanese-inspired outfit.
It just so happened that Lolita was mixed in there a little as well. I don't know anyone who saw that episode and got the wrong idea about lolita.

Even in that article, Lolita is mentioned only once.

The Japan trip was my favorite part of that show, personally. While I agree, most girls didn't appreciate the culture they were learning about, I still enjoyed watching it.

Agreed.

I watched the episode and I really wanted to cry. If I saw the girls in the beginning that were wearing all those amazing fashions I would have squeeled and ran up to them! Amazing stores were at their fingertips and they just didn't appreciate the opportunity that was presented before them. Even if they didn't like the style they could have been respectful to those who might like it and just appreciate having the opportunity to go to Japan, I would have loved it.
