Entry:

The fires came and destroyed their land, which caused the great migration lead by the prince to a new land....


However, some remain unable to part from their homeland even at its current state of nothing but burnt ashes and dead wood. The small group of cerynei became a cult known as the "Ashes" lead by a priestess who sought to restore their land even if the land was dead. She took up the role when none were interested in leading, though she was young she had a great determination that others lacked. She knew how to talk to the other cerynei to bring them together to rebuild, to rise from the ashes so to speak but even in her in strong leadership she needed a right hand. That right hand was her brother who bared burns on the right side of his body, he was strong warrior who once befriended the prince who left.

The two of them structred the cult of ashes, they had different ranks in the cult and the highest of ranks were the gather's who would go out for days in search of the necessary means such as water and food to bring back to them while second highest would be the warriors who protected them. As for the lowest rank it was nothing to scuff about or be treated poorly as they were important as they bared the knowledge of a time that was most important to not forget of the days when the cerynei lands thrived most of them were elderly incapble of providing resources other then knowledge they also were most likely to perish first if the means were to arise. Despite the barren lands and heavy air the cult were able to still produce babies, though the success rate of keeping a foal alive was rare making them precious to the cult.

When the anniversary of the day the wildfires came they would hold a celebrations covering themselves with ash markings, have a great feast which took weeks to prepare and tell stories about the homeland...about the prince.

They did not think poorly of those who left but they certianly would not bend the knee to a prince again.

She certainley would not give up her rank even if the prince were to ever return. She was the reason the cerynei who remained were surviving. The reason their homeland remained their homeland.

The fire had swept through her homelands with a furious wind; devouring brush, trees and woodland creatures without hesitation. In what was once a vibrant, lush valley now lay a barren wasteland of death and destruction.

Most of the herd had left, either with The Prince in his journey toward a new future for their kind, or out of fear for the unknown.

She however, had stayed behind.

A gentle hoof dug into the black soil beneath her as she stared out into the charred forest. It had been a few weeks since the Great Fire had wrecked havoc on their way of life to the point where it was no longer sustainable, and yet there she was, among the living - among the surviving. She often wondered what became of The Great Migration, and whether those among them had regrets of leaving their homelands behind...and she often wondered what would have become of her if she had chosen to go with them.

Memories of a magical foalhood would come flooding back to her as her eyes danced from hollow tree to hollow tree; visions of simple, silly little games such as tag or hide-n'-go-seek would continue to keep her spirit alive. There was a life to be had here - her ancestors had built these lands and their bones beneath the soil would bring new life once the blackness disappeared. At least that's what she told The Prince, when he begged her to come with them. They had been inseparable, the pair of them, each of their parents weaving tales of wonder of the Cerynei that came before them ~ but at the end, The Prince had a duty. She understood that. His duty was not to these lands but to those who inhabited it. They were the future; they were the ones who would keep the memories of those long past alive, so long as they themselves survived.

The mare's grandmother had been the first one to state she was going to stay behind. The mare's mother had passed just a summer before the incident, and there was no world in which her grandmother would leave her daughter's body behind. She'd die in the same place her daughter did, and that was final. And so the mare reflected, her mother was gone, buried beneath the soil, and her grandmother would soon be as well ~ there was no future for her if she left those she loved behind to be forgotten beneath soot and despair. So she stayed with her grandmother, vowing to take care of her until the ash took her too, and then....who knew.

When her grandmother had passed, she and a few of the other remaining Cerynei buried her after the fire had subsided, their traditions carrying a heavier weight than ever before. She wasn't going to be the last casualty of this destruction, but she'd be the first of those who chose to stay.

A few followed as the days and weeks passed, lost to the aftermath of the smoke.

And yet, she remained.

She dragged her hoof from where it lay in the black soil, and felt the start of cool ground beneath her. A patch of green had revealed itself as she uncovered the ground, and with it a spark of hope within her heart. She was no prince, she did not choose to save the herd, but perhaps...perhaps she could save the land. Perhaps when those who lived looked back, they'd know that she waited until the forest and the valley were alive again.

The land was wounded, but it was not dead. And she'd see to it that it thrived.

Entry: Somebody had to do it. Someone had to protect the fallen, fresh and aged, their- our history.

The early days were frantic, a flurry of activity amidst embers and ash, trying to stamp out the last licks of the blaze that lingered. Observing rites for those who'd succumbed, providing a final offering of respect, dignity. Protecting and watching over, warding away predators who might have come sniffing around for easy pickings before the earth had a chance to reclaim them.

It was somber work. Solitary. But felt vital, of utmost importance, protecting the dead, their history, their ancestors, in the wake of such disaster, in the wake of so many scattering to the winds for safety and survival.

Time presses on. The world turns. The seasons change.

But now the whispers of the fallen, or maybe merely memory, have started to echo in their dreams, gently probing 'why do you stay still? The land recovers, new, hearty little sprigs of green push through the scorched earth. Why remain with the company and keeping of the dead? You live still... Our stories, our lessons linger within you. Why do you choose to stay amongst the mounds and graves? Would it not be more beneficial to go bring what you know to our living descendants, to pass on the knowledge to children of your own?'

Perhaps it is about time. It has been years. Those who they'd buried, protected, honored, their physical remains were little more than watched over bones by this point. Was it safe to say their duty was done here? Could their next steps lead them out to stop looking over the past to looking towards the future? More would benefit from what they knew, the lore they carried... Perhaps they spread the weight of the past they'd carried for so long, could pass it along. Someone has to do it...
