Hand-Sewing Q&A
Why learn Hand-Sewing when Machine sewing is better? That comment is misleading. Machine sewing is not always better and you really should learn the basics of hand-sewing before ever touching a machine. Here are some key reasons why you need to develop this skill.
1) You can sew anyway you want with a needle and thread.Yes using a machine will make things go faster, but you can do most stitches by hand including some you can't by machine (or if you don't have the parts for the machine). Hand-sewing also allows greater fabric manipulation to help the product come out right too.
2) More accurate costumes. As mentioned you can manipulate fabric better with hand sewing, but there is also more reasons when it comes to making an accurate costume. First of all learning to hand-sew is the first step in learning embroidery. This will allow you to make patches and decal that would otherwise be hard to do or you'd have to pay a pretty penny. Another reason is if you want to make historically accurate clothing (like 100% accurate) then learning to hand sew will allow you do that. They didn't have machines back in Marie Antoinette's time.
3) Better looking clothingI don't know about you, but I can't do everything right on a machine. I'm sure it will be the same for you. Smaller parts of a costume or pieces with curves aren't the easiest and don't get me started on learning to put in zippers. There will be a lot of trial and error, but lets save those for learning to do those things and not for your final project.
