Was the clowns plan falling apart? No. In fact, say what you will about the ramblings but this terrorist a mad genius was still a genius. A genius realized that sacrifices are required and mad genius knows...a mad genius knows what makes people hurt. Mole-iarty was a sacrifice. For you see when it would fall to the squid mans attack its smoke remained thicker still, thick enough that the squidman with all that was occurring had failed to notice that the string once belonging to the mole puppet had planted itself on the kages heel.
The spider puppet while intimidating a mere additional distraction, however, the coming of the tentacles...that was not expected that was not according to plan and the destruction of his precious creations weapon was also not according to plan. The puppeteer's fingers moved wildly. Anger, confusion, it was hard to read what emotion the words it spoke conveyed. "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" But it was in those words that something would have happened. Toso was ready to alternate to the offensive but low...this is not what would happen. An utterance as the back of the clown snapped itself forward. The words would be unheard to the two nin. "...break."SH..! but it was too late and the voice likely went unheard before Shion let loose her attack. What seemed like a burst of the Rokubi's chakra occurred and would be felt.
Shion's attack.. while it was meant for the damned owl at full power. As she landed on the ground to bear witness to the fruits of her labor...she would see one porcelain body wearing a black dress start to fall through one cloud of smoke it cracking and falling to pieces before it exploded from its internal canister and from the other cloud she was likely expecting an equally decimated owl...but instead she would see the singed and mangled remains of none other...than her friend and Arashikage. Toso. Toso would be laying in a bloody shambled puddle at Shion's feet only after that visceral crunching noise one makes hitting the ground. That was, unless Shion would exert herself in the activity of catching him. His arms and legs appearing to be broken to degrees that would make rag dolls jealous. For all intents and purpose, there would be no reason for Shion to believe that none other than she herself brought an end to the squid man. Why? Because Matatabi could tell her personally it was not a genjutsu and that sudden burst of Saiken's chakra still lingered in the area...but then his chest rose...breathing? There was hope! But of course, that was obvious! If she'd killed him Saiken would have been rampaging wouldn't she. If Shion tried to speak to Toso she'd get one of his 'half-smiles' that said 'it's okay, I'm not mad.'
You see this was all according to plan. For you see while Shion would have every right to believe that she just gruesomely injured her friend and kage with him on the cusp of death, within the smoke, in the place of Toso the owl puppet hid. A convoluted orchestration of events had occurred unknowingly to her. One that could only be explained in detail past the boundary of the fourth wall. Suffice to say...if and when she'd let her guard down. That was when it would happen. When the body she would likely be mourning over, or caught in a stupor of disbelief deemed that Shion was at her most fragile would...explode into fragments of glass and wooden shrapnel in an instant. That explosion would then serve as the cover for the toy soldier who through the smoke would aim its giant blade straight through the center of Shion's chest.
Now this begged the question...where was the real Toso? After the disorienting events, he would unknowingly to Shion be inside somewhere. Or rather...something. An aggravating tune still playing which was at a maximum intensity that he'd have been forced to hold his ears. The fact Shion had attacked him, that was true, but that it was enough to kill him...well if it had not been for Saiken perhaps it would have. As Toso was enveloped in the six tails cloak. Wherever he was the walls were made of wood. Fuuin symbols everywhere and in this room was a jack in the box whose crank seemed to never stop belting its music. Toso was 'inside' the horse. Of course he hadn't yet to deduce this because of the aggravating tunes playing on repeat. Then both Shion and Toso would be granted a moments peace the music stopping but Toso would bear witness as he opened his eyes the box he was with had popped open to reveal a jack o lantern like head before a ball of flames launched out from it.

SHIONxxxxxMORI The trap laid for her would ultimately fail no matter what. You see, the galaxy-brained puppet master's plan hinged on Shion being predictable... a rational human who would be stunned, horrified even, at their actions... or at the very least take a second to mourn for her comrade's loss. Should have done a little more research, dude.
A flood of emotions would break through the rough-and-tough facade like water through a failing damn. Shion would indeed stand there, but only for a brief second before coming to another poorly thought out conclusion. "I killed him. I was careless. Couldn't Save him. Puppets distracted me. Should have watched the puppet master. He did this. Those puppets. Puppets. Puppets... Puppet Master." A stream of babble flooded from her mouth as rage burned inside, pouring out of her in every possible way. A terrible scream brimming full of pain, hate, sorrow, and every other negative emotion ripped the air open, threatening to overtake even the village alarms that were currently blaring a signal of attack. Screams would soon turn to bestial roars as the black and blue chakra rippled over the girl's body, encasing her in a ragged suit of bone and flames. Tears streamed down her face... or at least they would had they not been instantly turned to steam.
The puppet would no doubt take this time to set off its trap, but it was too slow. In the blink of an eye, Shion was already putting the Nibi's legendary speed into action as she bee-lined straight towards the puppet leading the charge, barreling through whatever, or whoever, was stupid enough to get between her and her prey. The gap was closed in an instant. Now, a torrent of pain would be unleashed on the clattering assailant. Shion didn't know if it was a person, a puppet, a person in a puppet, or whether he was meant to be taken alive. She didn't care one way or another. She was going to make him hurt.
In stark contrast to the puppet master's cunningly devised plans, Shion's assault was simply brutal. She was upon him now, the flames of her cloak lighting the puppet's surface clothing ablaze. He'd have ample time to disrobe if he managed to get away, but a few seconds longer, and his whole body would be a burning effigy to Shion's wrath. All of this hinged on whether he could escape her vicious onslaught. In the fraction of the time it would take most men to throw a single punch, Shion had lashed out with two furious claw swipes targeting the puppet master's torso. Should these land, Shion would follow through with a full on grapple as she would try to sink her burning maw into the puppet's neck. It might not have any arteries to dislodge, but you never know... it may follow human rules. Worth a shot.
Offscreen as if a fade to black occurred it was back to Toso. Momentarily at a loss from both the alarm and what had happened. "Thank-you Sai-chan. That's enough." The cloak which enveloped him disappeared the Added Fortitude from Saiken alleviated the damages and thank goodness he'd moved his shield arm at the last second, although his shield had finally worn itself from the beatings it endured. Naturally, time to think was not given due to that annoying music which ended suddenly forcing his eyes shut. When it finally stopped Toso's cane in hand would readily prepare itself. Another flame...what was with the recurrence of fire lately.
Toso would swipe at the attack, where it would have exploded it instead was swept away. The Puppeteer had banked on this being enough to have disposed of the squid as in his head after taking a blow from his ally he'd have been defenseless. Rather Toso saw the need to figure out his situation as quickly as possible and before the box could retreat, a decisive offense in which a strike was aimed to pierce the box center with the end of the cane. The strike caused the box to crack but it did not break, that strike would then show that the cracks made were beginning to glow and the box was beginning to expand, and in that strike the flames that were made for him did excise themselves causing the jack in the box puppet to explode from its own technique. A leap away from the residual shrapnel did Toso make as it began to rain gadgets and gizmos springs and sprockets within his 'prison'.
A water droplet transition revealed this all to have happened in Toso's plan of action. That's what he would have done and that's what would have happened...Toso unknowing of the prisons specifications would perform the Wafting stroke expecting to seal the technique. IT, however, failed to do so and merely caused the dispersal. Not without some minor burns on his hand from the process. To which it then exploded into the walls where the walls revealed themselves to be undamaged. Toso was staring down the cackling looking box as it started to coil itself down. He realized he needed to do something.
The sealing failed, the chakra failed, Saiken informed Toso she could not contact matatabi, that meant some kind of seal, chakra seal? Ink-blade edge won't work, jutsu won't work, his inking methods won't work. The box was slowly getting closer and closer to closing and he was unsure if he had the power to stop it....then a lightbulb. Take a lesson out of Shion's book...if nothing else works...punch it. Toso tossed his shield to the side. It had been a long time since he'd used his fists. Hopefully, he still had it in him. Like a popular anime about a pirate with rubbery limbs Toso would reel back his arm and fire it at the box right at its peak of closing like some kind of fist pistol that snapped back. In doing so the box would explode into bits and baubles...explode...well now...It was a good thing he didn't go with the first plan. He'd look around his surrounding before muttering to himself "I still got it. bloop. I hope you're alright Shio-nee. I'll be back soon."
He figured if he was somewhere, then maybe the walls connected to another somewhere. Nothing else worked. Punch it. But it was likely going to need to be a hard one. Toso would begin to compose himself. Before he began to wind up his arms spinning it to build elastic momentum and tension while he hardened his muscles. He stared at the wall before him. He was going to make one dynamic exit.

With the cocking of its head, the puppet master did indeed find the girls reaction utterly surprising. Although it didn't have long to comprehend this notion as Shion was on the puppeteer like ugly on an ape. The first strike would hit true and then what sounded like an explosion occurred in the black smoke. That was all it would allow, after judging the strength of the blow the puppets natural defenses would kick in. The head would turn downward as Shion attacked relentlessly at its body. Although perhaps she was too fueled by rage to notice that her attacks while they were landing were showing no signs of actually damaging the puppetmasters shell as the shell was starting to grow and expand outwardly like a balloon with each strike she was making as if absorbing and dispersing the force, her flames also ineffective a coat of chakra familiar to most Katon users enveloped the puppet which did catch fire but not critically as one would assume. For you see, unbeknownst to Shion the puppet master had two affinities and one of those affinities like her was fire. For fire was a common threat to puppets. The other was earth but it wouldn't be displayed as of yet.
From the speaker box like voice it had. "Use..LESS." Said as if it were calling the distraught Shion useless which was what it seemed with her attacks failing. While the stomach expanded it would then shortly after from its inflated center begin to deflate and the puppet would move to execute the wild child it didn't understand as a blade shot out from its left and right forearm having been obscured by its bloated belly. The first would intercept one of the girl's onslaughts where if she insisted on continuing it would do so with an intent to punish, whilst the other would then thusly swing down with prejudice set to cut off the very hands that so wildly assailed it if not a finger or two at the very moment of interception.
The hands still free for matriculations would call to his other puppets that remained. The toy soldier having never having its criteria fulfilled would instead use that same energy to strike the girl from behind while her attention was solely focused on the man who orchestrated her 'killing' of her close friend. Its eight-foot blade aimed for the small of her back primed to penetrate her entire body through this pincer. If she dodged backward she'd do so right into the toy soldiers blade. Copycat, wouldn't have fulfilled its function as the puppeteer was never presented with a weakened woman rather than explode it remained in a crumpled heap where it was left. But not for long. To add insult to injury wherever Shion had placed herself now she would find that the rag dolled 'remains' of her ally were being used as a meat shield. The chest of the mimicking puppet still rising and falling.

SHIONxxxxxMORI Her opponent's speed was impressive, but there was very little that could overcome Shion's supernatural reflexes in this state. The first set of strikes would meet the all-too-familiar fate of landing a blow on a mirror image as Shion rapidly blinked around the pincer strike. The piercing blow from the back would meet the same fate as Shion seemingly bounced off air to get a higher angle of attack. With the big wind up reaching its apex Toso would then launch his flying fist of fury at the nearest wall. Outside the trojan horse puppets, chest would burst open in wooden shrapnel as the kage's arm snapped back. Now it was in this very moment that Toso, the real Toso would pick up the situation in the office from his respective other-self. This wasn't good. This was the worse possible time. How did they discover the real Arashi so suddenly? Such wouldn't have been possible. No. It couldn't have been possible. Unless. There was a number of places Toso's head was going. Perhaps Sanbi had informed Kagami just then of Saiken and Matatabis releases, the ambient demon chakra would have been enough...but that would still require the need to ascend. That would have been obvious for the ground troops to have seen. That would have meant the entire village should have been exposed. That would have meant more chaos should have been ensuing than what was...the only rational conclusion. A spy. WAIT. A woman made a particular request just before this all happened...Shion's suspicions. Kagerou...could it have been? Her knowledge in sealing. It would have been simple for someone like her.
Toso shook his head "No." He'd reseal the shield. Now was not the time to ponder allegiances it should have been him in the office now. One heel resting outside the newly opened chest cavity of the puppet he'd peek out. Shion and was that...him? "I see." it looked like the puppeteer was playing mind games. He couldn't see the streams or tears in Shion's face but her body revealed untold anger, fire, and fury. To his benefit, however, it seemed the puppeteer was fixated on Shion. As would have been natural for a puppeteer when put under duress it was more difficult to keep track of one's puppets. Evidenced by the skeleton spider still balled up in a heap and the lack of response from the horse.
This needed to end now but he needed to conserve his energy as much as he could. There was no telling what would be unraveling in the office. "Saichan." she understood. Moreover, she was happy to oblige. After all, this was the man who confined her to the prison of a child's body she would spare nothing to see them suffer. Up until this point he thought Shion as no more than a nuisance. As he did with all individuals. Call it pride, and like all those types pride cometh before the fall. He would seamlessly have his toy soldier evade. It would then move in front of him. With the oncoming of Shion's attack, both puppets would raise their arms. The left arm of 'Toso' the Right arm of the toy solder that did not hold a sword.
"MISERABLE WENCH!" Hundreds upon thousands of hands and arms began to shoot outwards. Copy cats disguise would fade away. The mass of puppet hands and arms would be flying left and right from the explosion that was carried in Shion's attack plowing through. But even that explosion wasn't enough to blast through all of them. It was here that she'd hear the puppet master scream in what sounded like anguish "GUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" when just above it a massive torrential downpour of slime struck it. This would be enough to delay the oncoming attack of even more arms toward Shion. A massive barrier between her and the puppet master now in a state of exposure the mass of multiple arms a wave of death that almost seemed like they were grasping desperately at something like a drowning man trying to reach for the surface. There were many ways to go about it. The question was when Shion would hear the echoing words of her friend here "FINISH THIS SHIO-NEEEEEEE!" how would she do it.

SHIONxxxxxMORI The strain of holding the Nibi form this long was catching up to Shion, quickly. Luckily for her, the tried and true strategy of being too quick to hit was taking an equal toll on her opponent. Truth be told, she didn't know how much longer she could keep up. The only reason she had lasted so long was the power of Matatabi, and now that it was flickering out, she'd need a miracle to pull through. Oh hey, what do you know. A miracle... well, at least to her. Toso was certainly alive the whole time, but to Shion, the sounds of the squid's voice brought much needed relief and clarity to her actions. Her attack was still just as brutal, but now she was fueled by a renewed sense of confidence. With the clown now pinned by Toso's slime, she blinked forward in a series of mirror image jumps, dodging all the puppeteer's last ditch death throws. This would be the final blow. First, a single punch to the stomach, then a simple leg sweep. Finally, she'd drive it all home with a downward strike, only this would be a little special. As her punch arced through the air, her body would flicker once more, creating a ring of "Shions" who would all land their blow at once.
With her final blow, the flames of the Nibi would die out just as quickly as they appeared. Shion would stagger in her place, almost buckling under exhaustion. Through heavy breaths and weary eyes, She'd look around for Toso. She had to confirm she wasn't just hearing things. He still had to be alive. Surely.

Shion's attack would land the puppet shell would attempt to expand again but as it expanded the slime made it slack. When the attacks landed the shell would crack, air would escape. Followed by more and more slow but sure snaps. The slime would cause the carapace so fall off sliding down as if disrobing and in this moment the puppeteer behind the shell would be exposed. He was still very much alive but upon being exposed. He cried out with his eyes rolling into the back of his head. "BRIGHT! TOO BRIGHT! THE SOUNDS THE SOUNDS!" The man would enter a fetal position. He was a sorry-looking individual. Disfigured and wearing nothing but tattered rags that would make even a homeless person pity. While in this fetal position drenched in goo like some kind of failed birth the mans emaciated hands would cover his ears in desperation. "LOUD! TOO LOUD! THE NOISES! I NEED THE DARK! THE DARK!"
The mad man suffered from an illness. An illness that made it so even the smallest of stimuli seemed accentuated to intolerable degrees. Now that he was exposed the puppet he'd used to have stipend these stimuli could no longer help him. Thin, emaciated, a face disfigured as if someone had poured acid on it. This was not the cause of Toso's acid this was simply how the man looked. He was like a child screaming to have these senses stopped until he fell unconscious foaming at the mouth.
The clone of Toso would then land next to Shion. "Good work Shio-nee. But there's no time to dawdle bloop. He'd toss Shion something he'd caught from the falling apart puppet. "I salvaged this. I'll handle our friend here. Kogarashi has attacked. My true self is at the spire. Ah..you're eyes. Were you by chance of crying?" The clone would ask having taken notice of the streaks and tossing something to Shion. He didn't think Shion one to wear mascara so at least she'd be spared that embarrassment unless he was wrong. However, it would be up to Shion with how she planned on responding The situation was relayed to her and what could her greatest relief was that she hadn't killed her friend and Kage and that indeed he was still fine and dandy.

SHIONxxxxxMORI Shion cast her gaze down upon the squirming man-child before her like a disapproving principal. "Pathetic." she'd mumble to herself. This was the person who gave them so much trouble, the person who thought they could overthrow the village? She wanted to finish the job, make sure he could never cause anyone harm again, but it just felt wrong. In his state, what could he really do? Best to let Toso handle him from here.
Speaking of the squid, Shion quickly wiped away tears and muddied eye-liner as she turned to face Toso. What... you thought cause Shion was tough that she didnt wear make up? Come on. Sometimes even the bad kids want to look their best. As she approached him, Shion would try to keep an angered expression, but found herself cracking almost instantly into relieved laughter. "Shut up, Toso." she'd say through half-sob and laughter. "I'll kick your a** when all this is done." At this point, the squid would find himself under intense pressure as his temperature would rise as Shion, still smoking from the residual heat of the Nibi's flames gave the Kage a tight hug. In true Shion Fashion, it barely registered as a hug and was broken within seconds, but a hug none the less.
"I'll be right there," she said, fixing her mask and darting off to the tower.

He would then be waved off as the Kage's thoughts wandered but that STUPID face of the 'mastermind' would leave an impression in his head that he'd recall even when he'd sober up. It didn't make any sense. Shion wasn't going to let him save her from that monster that fed her rage and made her act like a criminal, like a - dare he admit it - monster. It didn't make SENSE. He wanted to rescue her from it. She acted like it had feelings. Like it wasn't just using her to bide its time.
He had let her walk out because she obviously wasn't going to let him help. Her clearance level was higher than his since she was leading the ANBU, which left him here, taking an unauthorized mission. There was corruption in the force - that much he was sure about - and if he couldn't save Shion (yet) then he could at least save his own police department from destruction.
Except... he'd gone in without a plan, without trying to talk things out or gather evidence. He was here, brawling in the slums with a dozen thugs intermixed with dirty cops and he didn't care. He was trying to get out of his head but it wasn't working. His blood was pumping but his thoughts were racing, still, about Shion's hurt expression, how she was so determined to protect Matatabi like it wasn't a bomb waiting to go off, like the monster wasn't something capable of decimating a village in a blink of an eye.
He took a good slug to the face. He'd tried not to use any jutsu in this fight, considering these were mostly civilians, untrained in the ninja arts. He didn't want it to be over too quickly. Except he did, he wanted it to be over, he wanted it all to be over because nothing was making sense anymore and Shion looked at him like he was the monster and he wasn't! He hadn't felt so horrible about himself since he killed those men in the Kogarashi war, hadn't felt like a monster himself since he took their lives and watched their blood wet the earth...
One of the guys had a crowbar and landed a good swing on his back. Kaito growled like an animal as Shion's hurt expression replayed in his mind's eye. He heard her voice - 'you're really not going to stop me, are you?' - before she left him in her office. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. He fell forward from the blow at the crowbar, crumbled right into another guy's knee. His nose broke with a disgusting noise and he couldn't help but gurgle on the blood in his throat, landing on the ground and spitting out as much of it as he could.
"Nothing to say, huh? You thought you could take down twelve guys like this? How pathetic. The department's never gonna know what happened to you, but we'll make sure to tell them it was dishonorable. Eh?" The goons laughed. Blood roared in Kaito's ears even as the adrenaline bled away with each pulse of his heart, his body growing stiff under the aches and pains. He could make a few hand seals on the ground, blast them away. But he didn't want to. He didn't want to.
ooc: tl;dr he's not using techniques to fight off a dozen thugs/dirty cops so he's getting his a** whooped rn.
A ghastly mist blanketed the area Kaito found himself bleeding on the floor of. Chains echoed in the distance as a figure moved through the mist. The corrupted officers of course turned to face the person interfering on their vengeance, but there was no person at all. Instead, what they saw through the mist was a tall, monster of a figure with a sword for an arm. It was just a distance away where only a silhouette was seen, but the piercing red eyes of the beast stared menacingly into the souls of all of its prey. The sight sent paralyzing fear through all of the men, and fearing for their lives they all ran off. Once the gang left, however, the theatrics ended. Hastened footsteps clapped against the cold ground as Avalanche rushed to Kaito's side. He slid down to the ground to be at Kaito's face. "Idiot." He said impulsively under his breath, unsure if Kaito could hear him or not. "Kaito... KAITO!" He said as he held the boy's head up onto his lap. He was trying to gauge if the cop was conscious as his hands forced his face to look up into his masked eyes. What the hell was Kaito doing here alone? When Avalanche went looking for different leads for this Antioch fellow, this was not what he expected to find.
A dumb grin had made its way on Kaito's face as the mist filled the air. He'd mistaken it for a sign of his passing into another realm. Except, it wasn't the hands of the Savior grasping his face but the hands of a savior. The voice was familiar, but he couldn't place it for a few foggy seconds. "A-Avalanche?"
He coughed up blood before he squinted up at the vigilante's masked face. "Why are... you here?" He turned his head in Avalanche's lap, groaning as his entire body ached in resistance. "You should've left me," he said quietly, the words barely slipping past bloodied lips. "It's my time." Even as he said the words he had so honestly felt were true moments ago, he found himself hesitating. He hadn't seen Avalanche in so long, why did it feel like he was more of himself again?
Avalanche smirked at Kaito's statement of thinking it was his time to pass. "A little dramatic aren't we?" They said, unaware of the deeper implications of the language. In their eyes, Kaito was acting like this because he was in pain, and it was just his mind saying whatever came to his head. "Your wounds are deep though. You definitely need more medical attention than a good night's rest." They said as their other arm moved over to Kaito's leg. Once they had a secure grip the vigilante stood and lifted Kaito into their grasp. "You're a pencil pushing fool for thinking that you could handle this on your own, but you'll be fine. After all, what would I do without my sidekick?" They said looking down at Kaito. They waited for a sign, any sign, that he was comfortable in their grasp. That he knew that Avalanche, no matter what he did, would not abandon him. Once they had that, then it was time for the hospital.
