I'm not surprised. It's only the next logical step in adverting (a lot of BL is mostly aimed towards those age groups that watch MTV). BL is well known among the geek fandoms (like comics, video games etc) but not all that well known among non-geeks. (Sorry to use those terms but I couldn't think of a better word right now.) So advertising about on MTV makes sense.
Adverting BL on MTV is not going to cause such a huge conservative uproar that's going to get it all banned forever. Have we forgotten Will & Grace, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, The L Word, Queer as Folk, and most recently, Brokeback Mountain? How about that Western superhero and non superhero comics featuring and doing in-depth stories on gay characters (most recently being Billy and Teddy's relationship in Young Avengers) since close to forever. These things have been out, had their moments of scandal and continue to be great forms of entertainment. They didn't disappear because people complained. The homosexual-themed mediums are not going anywhere, they cannot be banished as long as there is a market out there for them and we still have our 1st Amendment rights.
I'm saying there won't be backlash now. I'm just saying it's not going to be catastrophic. All in all, I'm glad BL is getting more exposure. Like someone else said the higher the demand the more titles we'll get.

Caine1035 I hate to tell you this, but yaoi is already mainstream. The last anime convention I went to, they had sections devoted to just yaoi. And you don't even want to know how many people were there. But whatever, I don't really care either way. I hate to break it to you, but yaoi is still an itty bitty niche in a small corner of the universe. Go outside of anime fandom and ask anyone if they've heard of yaoi. The general consensus will be no. The average MTV watcher will be like "Yaoi? WTF is that?" So, yes, within anime fandoms, yaoi definitly has a following, but out in the big wide world, it's still just a big question mark to the average Joe and a far cry from mainstream.

I have to say, I'm amazed by some of the guild members' views on yaoi becoming popular. Yaoi becoming mainstream is not a terrible fandom destroying thing. I think that people are generalizing and judging with the same close mindedness that they're accusing other people of. It's more than a tad hypocritical to stand there and say "Oh no! We can't let people know about it! They're all close minded idiots who won't understand!!!!"
For every close minded idiot, there's an equally open minded individual. That's not to say that everybody is going to approve, you can never please all of the people all the time, but people will understand. People are capable of thinking outside of the box. Maybe you should try it sometime. Liking yaoi or shounen ai does not give you a free pass to open mindedness. It only makes you look like a hypocrite when you start judging others so unfairly.

I think it's great that they took it up on Mtv so more people will find out about it but at the same time I think it's a little bit too soon. I think that they should have waited until it's at least a bit more established so it wouldn't be so easy to ban (or something) if there where a backlash. But since I don't live in Usa and I don't really know if it would be a backlash (and if there was, what would happen) or not I think I like that they took it up more than I worry, if that makes sense. sweatdrop I also think that the article and the video was interesting and well made ^^

So, yes, within anime fandoms, yaoi definitly has a following, but out in the big wide world, it's still just a big question mark to the average Joe and a far cry from mainstream. Exactly what I was going to say. If most people don't even know what manga is, much less how to read one, they aren't going to know about the yaoi variety either. Many, many people are still under the impression that "comics" and "cartoons" (AKA manga and anime, if you want to be politically correct) are still for kids and kids only. It's good at BL and yaoi are getting exposure, but one of the good things about yaoi was that a lot of people were in the dark about it. As in, they didn't make a big deal about it. If someone was interested enough in anime or manga to stumble upon it, then they did. Gay men looking for reading material have probably heard about it too. Now, everyone, open-minded or not is going to know. There might be some reprecussions from this, and while I'm not saying it's going to be explosive, the reaction might not exactly be pretty either. This could actually turn the more conservative people away from anime as a whole; people who judge quickly often go against one thing just because of one aspect about it they don't like. Not like conservative people are the kind who usually watch most anime... but my point is, there might be a little more negative thinking against anime and manga and its fans because of this by people who don't fully accept homosexuality. I'm not saying the reaction couldn't be good, either. This is just my idea of the other side of the coin.
