The pressure to be good- which in business was the difference between hiring or firing one employee, qualifying for an obscure tax break or simply paying them to earn renown in the common peoples’ minds.
His pen froze, and she looked up. She opened her mouth as if to speak, and then closed it again. His eyes narrowed; she felt like she was being studied, but only for a moment before his eyes crinkled in amusement. Amusement? “N-no. I’m certain there’s nothing uninteresting about your…” she began to explain herself before he finished, and then stopped short. “I-It’s not a case of argument.” Is it? “Anything you write about me, could be written about another girl. There’s nothing outstanding, to note.”
