Kyouya considered this question for a moment, then reached for his phone to double-check his schedule, out of habit. "I suppose that depends. Tomorrow is one of those rare occasions I have mostly free." If she looked, she could see the checkered pattern of appointments and scheduled events that filled his calendar, but there was a distinct emptiness on Monday.

"If you'd like, we could just take one car, and leave directly from here." His delivery was purely practical; parking in Tokyo could be a nightmare, even for the ridiculously wealthy. "Of course, if you have other plans that would require your own driver afterwards, I could meet you there."
"One car makes much more sense. All that awaits me at home tomorrow night is two kittens and a recipe for mochi." Shiny grinned as she put away the thermoses, delighted at the prospect of an outing. "We are set, then."

Just then the bell rang and she stood, catching Kyouya in one of her breezy hugs before heading off into the maze, "A bientot, bonhomme!"

"Until later," he echoed her, in translation. Kyouya was a little slower in packing up his lunch, somehow lost in thought as he headed for his next class.

****

The next afternoon was not nearly as pretty, and a cold drizzle spit intermittently out of a grey sky. Rather than wait out in the rain, Kyouya lingered under the main archway, umbrella and school bag in tow, and waited for Shiny to arrive.

He didn't have to wait long before Shiny arrived, darting across the central square with a buoyant step and an umbrella held daintily in one hand. "Oh, my stars but this weather is raw!" Smiling brightly even as she exclaimed over the dismal conditions. "I am grateful there were no outdoor installations! Are you ready to go?"

Smiling brightly even as she exclaimed over the dismal conditions. "I am grateful there were no outdoor installations! Are you ready to go?"

"More than ready," Kyouya agreed -- and those three words mixed dry amusement at the weather with, perhaps, a touch of quiet anticipation. It was not long before Tachibana had pulled the Rolls-Royce around, and Kyouya stepped to the curb to open the door for her, umbrella raised to prevent as much rain from catching Shiny as possible.

Old-fashioned? Perhaps. But like his family, he appreciated tradition, and simple gestures like this were ones he had no trouble upholding.

It was, therefore, somewhat to his surprise that when the door opened, a bright-blue balloon popped out, and sailed up into the leaden sky. It was followed in rapid sequence by a bright-orange balloon, three yellow ones, a green, a pair of pink ... and they just kept coming and coming and coming, an occasional one being trapped by his umbrella.

After a long moment, he adjusted his glasses. "Well. I believe my birthday was last week, and I don't recall it being yours ... ?"

"Not for another month." Laughing as more balloons began to escape, even as she tried to catch several of those that had already left the car. "Quick catch them! Who knows what mischief they'll cause elsewhere!" And also because playing Catch The Balloons was kind of fun, let's be honest.

Well, what could he do? She was right, really -- they couldn't just be left to wander loose and litter the city. With a wry smile, he began to capture them as best he could, storing them temporarily under his umbrella as his mind went to work.

Tachibana .... He would NOT fire his right-hand man, he determined, though like so many other times, it was tempting. While this wasn't his style, it was obviously done with his permission. He remembered Strawberry's laughing face earlier. Duly noted.

... well, and as pranks went, this really wasn't a bad one, he conceded, as he barely captured a balloon that had just slipped past Shiny's fingers. But really ... there seemed to be no end in sight! Had she filled the whole car?

"It's as if the entire car is filled with them!" Still laughing in delight as she unwound her pashmina and began using it as a net over the opened door, to keep any more of them from slipping out.

"We shall have to start deflating them, or we'll never be able to get in." Still holding the pashmina over the door she pulled out a pencil from her bag to start popping the balloons that hadn't escaped them. "Who did this, do you think?"

"Ah, no. I have no desire to spend my car trip sounding like a chipmunk," Kyouya noted, though with some amusement. He carefully tugged his buoyant umbrella over to the archway, and released the trapped balloons under the arch, for others to find later, then returned to acquire a second load.

"As for who, there's not really much question. There are very few people permitted access to my car." That calm, speculative look had settled in his eyes. "I could ask Tachibana to confirm, but I'm fairly certain it was Strawberry, especially given her mood earlier." The second umbrella-full of balloons went back to the archway. Kyouya was, perhaps, at this point, a touch damp around the shoulders and back. No matter, it would dry.

The comment about chipmunks had her pausing to look back at him, an openly curious expression on her features. "Sound like a chipmunk? Whatever do you mean?" Yep, that's right... Shiny did not know about what happens when you inhale helium.

Kyouya quietly raised an eyebrow ... then remembered that Shiny had supposedly lived as a recluse for fourteen years. Well, perhaps she really had, he supposed, and chalked that detail up in his mental notebook.

"Helium is less dense than air," he explained. They'd actually done a lab on this subject in his physics class at the beginning of the year ... with predictably teenage results. "Meaning that if you inhale pure helium, it takes less time for the sound to travel through your vocal cords, and you sound squeaky when you talk, until it dissipates." He looked her over matter-of-factly, as if he'd slipped into a bit of medical-profession detachment. "Obviously some people think this is quite hilarious. It can also be quite dangerous if you inhale too much at one time."

"Oohhh, truly?" Her expression lit up with interest and she eyed the balloon she currently held with a speculative look for a moment. But only for a moment, as she was immediately untying the opening so that she could give it a whirl. She put the balloon to her lips and took a healthy inhale, then looked over at Kyouya with the most innocent of expressions.

"Well it certainly doesn't feel different - oh!" Eyes going wide at the absurd-yet-adorable sound of her voice. She started to laugh, heard just how awful that sounded and slapped a hand over her mouth, then giggled anyways. "My stars, how wonderfully silly! Here, you try!" Holding the half-filled balloon out to him so he could share in the whimsically fun little moment, that sparkling, radiant smile spread wide across her face.

Kyouya shook his head with a polite smile. "Ah, no thank you. I've had quite enough of the silly since Lucas' little engagement party -- and I'd like to get into the car, actually." The rain had been steadily increasing as the two of them had worked to remove the balloons, and while he'd been able to control his shivers thus far, a bit of a chill had been working its way into his bones. He wanted to be out of the damp.

"Shall we?" he asked, retrieving the last of the balloons. He paused at the final one -- a sky-blue one -- and offered it to her with quiet amusement.

"Oh! Nova, I had almost managed to forget the rain!" Laughing softly again as she ducked into the car with him as well and settled onto one of the seats.

When he offered her the balloon she smiled, an impish twinkle in her eyes as she accepted with a dramatic sigh, "I suppose it's true that you are far too proper a sort to engage in a little whimsical fun." her tone light and not the slightest bit judgmental, as though she truly didn't see anything better or worse about being proper versus silly. "Ah well, I shall simply have to enjoy enough silliness for two!"

And she proceeded to inhale the helium, regaling him with a goofy version of La Vie En Rose during the ride to the museum.

Kyouya shook his head, still amused. "I've been told so. I've also been told I'll be dead of old age before I'm twenty-five." That didn't stop him from quietly feeling pleased that she was comfortable enough to be silly, even if he wasn't. The song eluded him; his French was tolerable at reading pace, but certainly not at singing, and all he could grasp was the chorus, mostly thanks to the repetition.

As was to be expected, the museum was a modern thing of steel, concrete, and glass, glowing with incandescent light through the grey of the rain, though it was oddly counterpointed by a nearby cemetery. He slipped out of the car quickly, to hold his umbrella for her until she could get out and settled with her own.
